If they replaced Elvis and The Fabelmans with The Northman and Nope, I would’ve at least liked every nominee in the category. Even The Whale would’ve been great.
Absolutely agree. Everything everywhere all at once is in my opinion, one of if not thee best movie of the last year. Maybe even the last decade. Impeccable what the managed to do with a ,in comparison, relatively small budget.
As I get older I believe making original films about contemporary themes is probably one of the most hardest films to make and I appreciate what they can create so much and for that reason I feel that everything everywhere is the film for our times. Instant classic. I can see this being a movie living through the ages. Incredibly original. Literally nothing I’ve seen before - this is what movies are made for!!!
I agree, half of them could’ve been left out 1. EEAAO 2. Triangle 3. Banshees 4. Tar 5. Women Talking 6. Fabelmans 7. Avatar 8. All Quiet 9. Top Gun 10. Elvis
I think that Elvis actually improves upon subsequent viewings. In particular, the second time I watched it, moments like the Colonel’s narration about how Priscilla knew she couldn’t compete with the love Elvis shared with his fans helped the themes of the film come into focus for me. In this case, Elvis’s performing was his way of sharing in a religious experience with those around him, but with the fervor his music caused, the Colonel (as someone who became a carnie to make his fortune in America) could only see a lurid reaction to a freak show attraction, and therefore was fundamentally unable to give Elvis what he needed. I feel that moments like the Memphis Mafia being introduced like characters in one of Elvis’s movies are flamboyant, but not necessarily in a way that is unbefitting of Elvis himself, enforcing the notion that they do share a vision and live from each other. Through his narration, nuances of the Colonel’s character are also revealed. When we see Elvis’s concert in Hawaii, the Colonel describes it as him “keeping his promise” to put him on an international tour, giving him the depth of wanting to do right by Elvis but only being able to do so as much as his illegal citizenship will allow.
I agree that in the past couple of years that there are some movies that don't really need to be nominated but the only one i disagree with would have to be elvis. And I think the movie and the way it was organized through Baz Lurmans eye was really the only way the story could be told. You also mentioned yourself, that you enjoy movies that show more than tell. And elivs honestly does that. If you only know the surface level stuff about elvis the movie does seem really long and the narration through the Colonel doesn't entirely make sense, but it really does offer the perspective that most people don't know. That all elvis really was nothing but a show for the colonel. He was a show he could use and captialize to his advantage. You can see that elis himself wanted to be given the opportunity to perform and share his talent with the world but you also see how he was always shown an opportunity through rose colored glasses. And this viewpoint is something only Baz can do. Baz has done an amazing job of making movies that are reminiscent of what hollywood movies should be, all while showing reality of situations. But I do really love this video! It offered me more insight on the movies I haven't seen yet!
100 percent I believe baz does a phenomenal job at creating a film reminiscent of old Hollywood which is very befitting for a movie about Elvis! I really think I need to watch it again

This is a very compelling argument I think I may need to do a second viewing!
