Certainly appreciated EEATO more than you did, but I can still understand finding the movie off-putting (both visually and thematically). It has so much that works on so many levels for viewers (myself included), but it's easy to see how it could be equally repellent.

All quiet on the western front is so much more than just another war movie. At least for us Germans. The book is regarded as one of the most important works of german literature here and this movie is a perfect visualization of the collective memory Germans have of the first world war. The brutality, the meaninglessness, the unreasonability. Enthusiasticly dying for nothing. This movie (and the book that I read in 8th grade) really moved me and I do hope that it wins this year.

Totally agree w/ you on Women Talking. Felt like the screenwriter speaking to the audience for most of its runtime. Also had elements that felt derivative of other great classics (i.e. 12 Angry Men). It's well-intentioned and well-performed but I don't see myself ever watching it again

I have never had someone speak my mind so exactly! I'm only two videos in but I think you have some the most astute observations on youtube.Just your love of "Ordinary People" was enough, but you have made great recommendations of films I've never seen and I'm so impressed! Looking forward to your future!

Tár is definitely the best film of the year: funny, insightful, surprising without causing an eye-roll, the writing is smart and original and also informative (you can learn a thing or two about music), the character of Lydia is just so in focus and in control, just as memorable as a Scarlet or a Sophie.
But because all of that it won't win. That's Oscars logic. Hopefully, Cate Blanchett will win although Todd Field should at least get Best Original Screenplay.

    • @alltalkingpictures
      @alltalkingpictures  Год назад +5

agreed! itll almost definitely age the best out of all the nominees, a movie with this sort of tone never wins so i was at least happy it got nominated in some inspired places (director, cinematography, etc). the probable cate loss will be rough though. its crazy that none of todd field's nominated actresses (all fantastic) have ever won

I was completely switched on to the Oscars this year, because of the amount of talent on show - so many exciting, challenging, interesting, exciting and colourful films!
Wow! Your views on EEAAO were SO refreshing. I don't share them.... but it was really enjoyable to hear a different point of view. I adored the film. It spoke to me, my sensibilities. I enjoyed that it didn't want to challenge me, as such, but understood me (I guess that's where you might view it as coddling).
Elvis was a crazy journey for me. I am a big Baz fan. And I have always been a very big detractor of Elvis. I've always dismissed him. The film showed me a totally different viewpoint, and I feel completely in love with him as a man and as an artist. But then again, I am also finally starting to get in to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. I have no idea who I am anymore haha..... I am loving the journey regardless.
All Quiet, Tar, Banshees, Fablemans, Top Gun, Triangle - wow, all so good!
A big surprise for me was Avatar. The first third gave me a headache.... but the whole thing worked beautifully as a whole. I was blown away and cried a LOT.
I am stick and tired when people say they think cinema is shit these days. They clearly need to unsubscribe for gross, depressing streaming platforms and leave the house, I think.

I'm not personally someone that gets extremely invested in the Oscars but your videos do a really good job of really showcasing how the awards are better framed as time capsules of the industry trends, I really like the in-depth approach of 1972, I was only really familiar with the Marlan Brando & Bob Fosse stuff but not the rest. As for this 2022, it was definitely an extremely interesting one, a mixture films that under normal circumstances would have far larger audiences but struggled post-pandemic and then 3 juggernauts declaring the return of MoviesTM. Haven't seen All Quiet, felt the same way about Women Talking, just didn't feel like anyone was an actual Mennonite and lacked tension which is bizarre given the subject matter. Personally loved EEAAO but I completely get that it's not going to be people's thing, I do agree with the 2010s internet aesthetic/humour point, that alligns with the Daniels own trajectory I think and I guess it feels somewhat formative in the sense that it hadn't really been done in a feature film format. Was lukewarm on Top Gun & Triangle of Sadness unfortunately but I pretty much felt the same as you did with all the other nominees, Tar also being my personal pick. I am happy to see that we're now in our 5th consecutive year of Oscars where there's at least one Non-english language Best Picture nomination and four out of five for International productions, I think the expansion in membership has at least seen a slightly better attempt of recognising global cinema (BAFTAs used to be good at that too before they started tethering themselves to the Oscar hype machine). Excellent video, I can't wait to see what's next!

    One note:
The "Dances With Smurfs" accusation about AVATAR (which I myself agree with) is 100% about the writing. And the writing is exactly the reason why I disliked AVATAR and refuse to see WAY OF WATER.
I completely respect the visual effects, and I understand Cameron's intent with the film. My biggest complaint is, though, that he absolutely could have made those statements and paired those visual effects with a script in which the characters were not cartoonish, trite caricatures. It's frustrating because we KNOW from his earlier work with THE TERMINATOR, THE ABYSS, and ALIENS that he is capable of writing realistic characters and dialog - but in AVATAR, every character is so....LAZILY written, that I was put off. (I think my exact quote when I walked out of AVATAR was to turn to a friend and wonder aloud why we didn't see Giovanni Ribisi steal candy from a little Na'avi baby because that was the only "bad guy" stereotype he DIDN'T do.)
I commend his VFX achievements and respect his themes; I just need there to be a script that doesn't insult my intelligence along with that.

So we disagree on Everything Everywhere Etc, but it's more a difference in taste than a disagreement. And I don't think Avatar Age Of Ultron deserved its nomination: it's gorgeous obviously (JC definitely knows how to sink a ship!), but the script is unfocused, with too many dangling threads. I do appreciate your insightful criticism of all other movies - especially your #10.

Great video! I really love how upfront and consistent you are with your tastes and perspective, they felt super well communicated so even when I disagreed with a lot of these rankings I could understand why and it didn’t like bother me or anything.
Real quick, I’d also love to add my own ranking in:
    - EEAO (so uniquely exciting and heartfelt, “modern” humor done right and very much so just my thing)
    - Banshees (perfectly balanced tone, Irish maximalism, grieved more for that one character (iykyk) than any other character from anything this year)
    - TÁR (pretty good but dragged more than it needed to, enough story for a tight 90, Blanchet elevates this a lot for me)
    - AQWF (a decent adaptation of one of my favorite books, great spectacle but Nope should be here instead tbh)
    - Top Gun (just really fun and solid, didn’t connect with it much emotionally but seeing that third act in the theater was worth it alone)
    - Fablemans (felt like a great set-up to an unfinished story, though glad to see Spielberg diverting from Ready Player One territory for once)
    - Avatar 2 (great visuals but a sloppy story particularly by Cameron’s own standards, too messy and broad in its structure for how shallow and aggressively mainstream it is-tho tbf I need to rewatch in IMAX 2D bc the 3D ruined my immersion completely-but the masses deserve better writing!!)
    - Women Talking (felt like a decent one act play stretched into a feature without justifying its runtime or medium much at all, some good performances but its world and characters all felt so surface level and oddly performative-like they were clearly actors acting, not real people just being)
    - Triangle of Sadness (obnoxiously on the nose and rarely funny, easily the most drawn-out slog of this list with only a handful of semi-interesting but totally underdeveloped things to say-the only nominee that truly makes me mad about snubs like Aftersun and Nope)
    *a few grammar edits

Out of this lineup I have a definitive top 4 that I quite like, and I'd be more than happy with any of them winning - three of them are in your own top 4 (TÁR, Fabelmans, Banshees), and the other film would be EEAAO. I think your reasons for disliking it are many of the reasons why I like it - the shameless silliness of it, the in-your-face sense of humor, and the courage to just be earnest. And I think the boldness of its choices and the wild disparity of its tones is actually quite challenging, so I would not agree that it's a film that just "coddles" the viewer either.
Then we have four decent-to-good films in Avatar, Triangle of Sadness, Top Gun and Women Talking (I have the same issues with the latter as you, but I still appreciate it as pure, cut-the-bullshit ideological debate too).
Then there's All Quiet, which I find somewhat competent but in a very sleep-inducing and uninspired way; and Elvis, which to me is another extremely predictable, Anthony McCarten-esque, I'd-rather-just-read-the-Wikipedia-page musical biopic that just happens to be beefed up by Luhrmann's spectacle (and unlike you, I'm not a fan of his visual antics - at least here).
Two turkeys out of 10 is actually a pretty good ratio as far as Best Picture lineups go, to be honest, so I agree with you that this one is at least above average.

I really like EEAAO, but I understand the points you raise about it. I think it also makes sense that you mentioned finding the comedy grating because it reminded you of early social media. If you choose to watch it again, I encourage you to try watching it almost like a character study of Evelyn. She's a person who's disconnected from that cultural attitude, who never made the conceptual leap into the Internet Age, and it comes crashing into her life and forces her into action in a way that speaks to a widespread desire for agency in a modern world that often seems to suppress it. I think that's the key to the movie's magic for me; if the protagonist was a young, tuned-in character, I feel like I wouldn't have liked it as much.

I think in the future 2022 is gonna be looked at as one of the best "best picture" line-ups ever. One of those "all killer no filler" lists in the vein of 1964, 1972, 1994 and 2007.
I am 8/10 into them with All Quiet and Women Talking to go, but so far the movies I thought I would like exceeded my expectations, the movies I went into determined I was gonna hate (Top Gun) were delightful and moving and my far and away favourites from previous years (Licorice Pizza, The Artist, The Favourite) have several movies on their level.
Elvis, The Fablemans and EEAAO are my favourites this year. Couple try too hard to be "universal stories" but all go off on enough weird, personal tangents for them to feel like the work of artists really nakedly putting themselves out there.
Edit: Also, nothing has brought me more joy this year than the Randy Newman song on the Everything Everywhere soundtrack.

Good video! Like somebody else here guessed, I probably got served your first video thanks to my Be Kind Rewind subscription, although I'm subscribed to some other film channels as well.
I feel the same about EEAAO; it didn't match the hype it was getting and that the humor didn't do it for me, and I'm not above low-brow/silly or multiversal stuff (I like the MCU lol, my taste is not so discerning). Nothing about it really resonated with me.
I don't feel as warmly about Tár as you though. It started so strong too; Cate Blanchett just talking about music is something I never knew I needed, and I could've watched two hours each of the interview and Juilliard scenes. Then it got less interesting fast, and at the mid point, when I felt I knew what the conflict of the story was shaping up to be, I just stopped out of disinterest.
So what did I like? Banshees of Inisherin, the Fabelmans and Triangle of Sadness were probably my top three. Banshees has great performances (Keoghan's performance stuck with me especially too), and Triangle just had some quality about it that kept me engrossed the whole way through. I guess I like comedies. The Fabelmans is up there because it's a coming of age story and I'm easy to please that way. I would've put the Whale up there too, Fraser's performance was amazing and I don't care what critics or anyone have to say about the rest of the movie.

Banshees of Inisherin was my favorite movie of this lineup. I love the way Martin McDonaugh writes characters and his brand of dark humor just always hits for me. I really wanted it to win original screenplay and supporting actress for Kerry Condon (Jamie Lee Curtis had no business winning that Oscar, she's not even the best supporting actress in her own movie. I'm still mad about it.). Honestly Colin Farrell would've been my pick for best actor as well.

I think your perspective is kind of opposite to mine in this but I do appreciate your videos very much and your insight on each movie. I still have to see all of the nominees but I can say that after watching EEAAO I got the feeling that there was nothing else quite like it, and its mix of playfulness and seriousness while talking about motherhood and family really hit me.
I also enjoyed triangle of sadness although I think that some scenes could have been better edited. I did not know, however about the reference so I guess it makes sense to not rank it that high. I am kind of a sucker for socioeconomic commentary so yeah, I was happy when parasite won an Oscar and I am not surprised at the amount of praise that EEAAO got. I guess I would have liked for Cate Blanchett to win best actress even tho I didn’t enjoy Tar that much.
I’ll be waiting for your next video, thank you for this ranking!

Generally though, I disagree with your blockbuster placements. While technically impressive, I felt Top Gun and Avatar were soulless husks. My ranking is as follows:

    5. All Quiet on the Western Front

My biggest problem with the first Avatar was that it is designed to be seen in 3D in the cinema. As someone who already wears glasses the addition of the 3D glasses is at best uncomfortable and by the end of the film impractical. The bridge of my nose simply isn't designed to hold two pairs of glasses for hours.
Hence when a film is designed to be shown in the cinema as 3D, I opt out completely and get my reduced experienced cheaper at home, on a future date. Avatar 2 falls squarely into that category of streaming/TV only movie for me.

I find your comments SO insightful and think you really get to the heart of things which I love!
I also resonate so deeply with your distaste for EEAAO’s brand of maximalist absurdism and I think it’s best seen in Jobu Tupaki’s intro scene. I don’t think we should be using words like “original” to describe an idea of “everything” whose scope feels so limited-namely 1) cringe 2) millennial 3) American. *checks notes* a wrestler, dildo combat, and a samba dancer with the Carmen Miranda banana hat? Not to mention the samba costumes were paired with generic “Latin” stock music which is actually Mexican ranchera music… it all comes across so cursory and soulless to me 😭 it makes me even more upset because the dialogue and exposition going on in the scene is so fun, but I can barely see past the confetti vomit frankly.

I knew you were a Tar boy! God I loved that movie! I think you are the only other person that shares my take on Women Talking. I love Sarah Polley and was rooting for her to win all season without seeing the film. Finally, LAST WEEK I watched it on a day my boyfriend was working late and I had had a glass of wine or two and was in the mood to cry it out. I was shocked that a movie with such powerful subject matter could leave me so unaffected. I couldn't believe how stilted and unnatural a lot of the moments were. Ben Whishaw is usually someone I think can do no wrong as an actor but it was painful watching him over act so much--my guess was to make up for how underwritten his character was. The moment where they all laughed felt so forced and written, but I thought all of those actresses were doing their absolute best to sell it. On the plus side, my disappointment over that film helped me to find your channel which I absolutely love! I'm a huge old Hollywood fan and I adore all the detail and passion you put into your videos! Please keep them coming!

For me the best film out of the nominees was The Banshees of Inisherin and also captured a really prominent mindset in our current culture of hopelessness and making fun of it as well.
The other film that captured this sentiment quite well was probably the actual winner EEAAO, but probably won bc it’s much more optimistic and hopeful. I quite enjoyed it too, but I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite of the year looking back.
My actual favorite of the year was probably Babylon or Close.

It’s interesting the critiques you got for women talking and EEAO is the exact criticism I had for avatar 2 and James Cameron entire talent as a filmmaker. To me his direction doesn’t translate to his screenwriting he’s great at world building through the visuals but his screenplays by adding depth and understanding to the world he’s building end up falling extremely flat and clumsy. That’s the opposite I felt EEEAO did the symbolism and maximum usages enhances the story that is depicted, I feel the different from women talking the dialogue and characters actually felt extremely real especially when they tell their monologue the screenwriting feels less like a play or a movie and more like a real life window into a isolated community making a shift.
I do agree with putting banishes and tar in the top 5

Even though I haven't seen Avatar 2, Women Talking or All Quiet on the Western Front. I pretty much agree with the others, I was really disappointed when I watched EEAAO and have the same thoughts as you do. Elvis was fine, Tom Hank's voice over was a pain to get through. Triangle of Sadness was a fun (full) theatre experience. Top Gun: Maverick is good blockbuster filmmaking but that's as much as you'll get out of it.
Banshees sits with you and all four performances are very good, out of the five, Kerry is my personal pick. The Fabelmans is a film that I think was kinda marketed/thought of wrong, it's not too much about the 'magic' of movies but quite a focused look at his upbringing and use of filmmaking because of that. To me, the high school stuff was fleshed out, Chloe East has good comedic timing. Really shocking that Gabriel is not at least nominated for best actor.
TAR is one of the best of the year, it's so carefully crafted and it's one that pulls you in from the first frame. Nina Hoss should should have been nominated instead of Jamie Lee Curtis, her stares tell so much. It seems the Academy isn't too keen on it which is a shame.
Shame Nope wasn't up for at least technical stuff and pitiful that Decision to Leave didn't get nominated for anything.

Just gotta say, for your #9, you're my GOAT, lmao. You more or less described everything that I disliked about this movie in such a succinct way that I was too afraid to say at the time because everyone seemingly loved it.
I was going to subscribe when checking your 1972 Oscars video out, but turns out, I already did!
I have to say, after watching all these videos so far, you are doing fantastic work at diving into these niche elements of Hollywood, particularly its politics and some of its meta trends in relation with history. But something I was very pleasantly surprised with this video is how good your film criticism is. Though I don't share the same love for it as you did (personally Top Gun Maverick was my favorite of the populous blockbusters), it was fascinating to here you argue for Avatar 2 and the brilliance of James Cameron and his ambitions of making sensory loading spectacles. You’re the only person I’ve been able to find with me who agrees on the fact that Tár was the best of the year, and EEAAO was one of, if not, the worst. I love the long, drawn out overture of Tár which almost acts like a screening mechanism for people who just won’t get it. Only through a neurotic lesbian can this story be delivered to journalists at The Cut and NYT Magazine. (I kind of can’t believe so many critics have it high praise, as it seemed to be a pretty searing indictment of the professional critic class, but whatever). And well said - it very much portrays the kind of culture we live in now and will be such a perfect time capsule for future years to revisit. It is also brilliant to have a lesbian movie without a single sex scene.

I know this is a year later and not so relevant but I honestly wonder how the discussion of Women Talking would be if they changed which characters were played by famous actors. I feel like we completely focus on the three women played by famous people and it colors the way people read the movie. I agree, those three women are bland and tropey and all the performances are pretty terrible. But if you look at all the other characters I feel like they do have stronger performances with more nuanced perspectives and they elevate the movie every time Claire Foy seeks to destroy it.
