After competing in the 24 hours of Lemans in 1965, this car was used to set 23 speed records over 12 hours at the Bonneville Salt flats by my friend Craig Breedlove. After Bonneville, Shelby offered it to Craig for $3000. Craig declined. That was a lot of money then for a worn- out race car. Craig joked about this for years, as it is now worth somewhere around $30,000,000.
@@Android-vk8yh I have not seen any documentary, however I have seen a video of Craig Breedlove and Pete Brock, sitting in front of the car at the Philadelphia Museum. We arguably still do have incredible battles between manufacturers. But because they aren’t 50 year old stories they aren’t legendary, and because most manufacturer battles have already taken place the rest are just repeats and will never be as good of a story when compared to the originals.
Note* The little spoiler on the back was an afterthought. It was not for downforce in the corners. It was that the backend would lift under deceleration at high speeds. Strangely, the original Audi TT suffered from the same issue, and they added a similar little spoiler.
And it doesn't generate downforce, it reduces body lift. Which sounds like it has the same effect, but spoilers also reduce drag whereas wings increase it.
I knew Dick Smith. While doing work for him, he was showing off his cobra and asked me if I wanted if I wanted to take it for a drive. That thing was such a gem, I didn't even want to sit in it. These cars are just absolutely raw. I can't imagine one for a DD.
