This is an amazing talk, so much here. AEI was mentioned and right there, I felt myself move away because over the years, AEI has come out with some bad rec's, imo -- but that feeling I had (as a bleeding heart social liberal) is kinda what you guys were mentioning, the tendency to abandon something Just Because i have ... done it for so long. i myself have to interrupt that tendency in me, else... nothing in my own head may move fwd. ...Also, i'm a homebirther, BUT it was not during COVID -- WOW, that is incredible, you have my deepest respect!! ...This is one I'll probably listen to again.

In reply to your left-right sensibilities, I've been reading Kenneth Craycraft's new book Citizens Yet Strangers, and he's a post-liberal thinker that is helping us to think as Catholics first when approaching modern American political discourse so that we can use the language given to us from Catholic Social Teaching instead of the partisan political language based in Classical Liberalism. This way we can speak more accurately both to our fellow Catholics and to the world to advocate for distinctly Catholic causes that transcend any party affiliation.

40:00 Is Sister Joann Chittester (sp?) still speaking? A decade ago i remember her on Bill Moyer's making a distinction between "Pro Life" and "Pro Birth" which is today an easy starting point for inclusive debates; too many ProLifers shrug off the living part of the person forced into it who becomes financially more dependent (or desperate) because there is now another life to support. I was never supportive of the 3 selective abortions a friend had, yet my adoptive mom's abortion was needed lest she die (she later adopted my brother and me). Imo it needs to remain as a safe and obtainable procedure. ...ideas?

Abortion has always been permissible if the life of the mother is at risk as this would fall under what is called "double effect". For example, in an ectopic pregnancy, the fallopian tube can be surgically removed to save the mother's life even though, that action of removal, results in the death of the child. Even the strictest abortion bans allow for these exceptions.

@@erric288 Cool, that much i am glad to hear(see). And i have been seeing way more positive-sounding stuff out there from Catholic groups. Re: Catholic orgs that purport to help out Postnatally, that's pretty amazing, fwiw. But i admittedly don't know much abt them (as i have grown up with some Privilege, thank God, not ever needing those kinds of resources), do you? How long/far does that care extend? Submitted w/respect.

@@b8akaratn Sure, I'm no expert, but I know local to me is the Catherine Foundation that not only assists mothers during crisis pregnancies, but also continues to provide assistance for the child and mother materially (formula, car seats, clothes, etc.) and by referring them to other resources (housing, food, financial assistance, etc.). They also have resources for the Fathers as well as all kinds of educational information new parents would need to know.
There are many such places across the country. But I think that county, State, and/or Federal assistance programs should be pursued to support new parents. Everything from paid parental leave up to 12 months, promotion of home birth/demedicalization of birth, the promotion of breastfeeding (especially on public), universal health care, promoting kid friendly culture (instead of kids seen as infringement on adult experiences and being relegated to kid focused places), subsidized daycare, increased tax credits for children, promotion of stay-at-home parents when possible, to vouchers for school choice (so people can send more kids to Catholic schools or homeschool). All of these things promote a culture where family is paramount and supports the rearing of children. These programs or policy objectives transcend the liberal-conservative dichotomy.
