Here's Why Hyundai's N Division Is Underrated - 2022 Elantra N Review

  • It's not often that manufacturers come out with a new brand entirely. And while Hyundai's N division has been around for a couple years now, they're finally starting to crank out more products. I was very keen to see what this new Elantra N was all about, especially with the optiononal DCT transmission. Come along for this episode where we take a deep dive and see just how good this forgotten performance brand really is..

    Thanks for putting out an unbiased review, unlike that trash "review" from Doug Demeuro which is basically a marketing campaign for Subaru WRX. I own a GT350 and bought an Elantra N for my daily. It is a fantastic little car and I enjoy driving it as much as my Shelby.

      I found the Demuro review so strange....yes, the WRX comparison was sooooo belabored as to be a total distraction, plus the drive segment was literally....nothing. I have found his detailed "quirks and features" reviews enjoyable over the years but this one was strangely flat and almost weirdly dismissive of the car--- as well as being completely incongruent with now a ton of other drive impressions by other folks.

    Just an FYI, the rear bracing does actually unbolt pretty easily. So you'll lose the added rigidity for cornering, but if you're planning a trip to IKEA and need that extra space for their extra long packaging, that bracing does come out so you can fit larger items inside. Then you can just rebolt it back in once you're done.

    Sweet review 😎 As a side note:
    “Hyundai’s ‘N’ represents two important elements. First, the Namyang district in South Korea, the birthplace of the N brand and location of Hyundai’s Global R&D Center. Second, the Nürburgring racetrack in Germany, which is home to Hyundai’s Technical Center which is used to test the N vehicles. Finally, the ‘N’ logo itself is also a representation of a classic chicane or tight serpentine turn in the road."

      I'm in a mk7 golf R right now and it's a 2015 so I've had it for about 7 years and time for a change. No need for AWD as I'm in Florida... And the mk8 Golf R is way too expensive. I've been looking at the Veloster N DCT or this one. I have a question for you since you've already have the Veloster N manual.
      What is the main reason you're looking to switch? Is it the looks? Is it the interior? The 26 extra HP and almost 30 lbs of extra torque? Wanting the 8-speed wet clutch DCT? Or just a combination of everything I mentioned?
      I know that the 2021 VN has 275 instead of 250 HP like in your 2020, and has the DCT option.
      And from what I understand in terms of a driver's car and performance, they're both pretty similar, yet the Elantra N is a bit more refined when you tone down the settings.
      Have you given the Elantra a test run, or are you just going to go in blind? I personally would feel much more at home in the Elantra interior than the Veloster N. Especially because the 20/20 Veloster and didn't have the 2021 Recaro style seats. However I am much prefer the looks of the Veloster N. But the interior is way too budget for me, and that's where we're sitting, and where we have all our fun so interior is really important to me. Sorry about the long post but there aren't too many people who post that have a VN and I'd love to hear your reasons for wanting to switch to a car that's very similar mechanically. Probably a lot of the stuff I mentioned. Oh yeah and have you kept it completely stock or maybe a simple jb4 power bump? That's what I think I would do for an extra 25-30 HP and TQ. Just enough to not upset the chassis or the car's natural behavior.

    • @robertdean387
      @robertdean387 2 года назад +1

      @@Daveyboy_GolfR My 2020 had the performance package, so it did have 275 hp. And I agree with you that I actually prefer the exterior looks of the Veloster N over the Elantra N. I actually already sold my Veloster N picked up a Cyber Grey EN with DCT. I mostly wanted a bigger back seat for family expansion as well as an auto for my wife. The interior is a huge step up from the VN. The extra torque is also noticeable. And while the DCT is great, and shifts faster than I ever could, I do miss rowing my own gears a little bit. They do drive very similar but the EN just feels more solid. Maybe it’s the weight or build quality but it just feels like a more solid car. Like moving from a civic to an accord kind of solid. I hope that answers your questions. I do miss my VN, but the EN is fantastic. It had a few minor interior rattles that are driving me nuts but I’ll find them eventually.

    • @Daveyboy_GolfR
      @Daveyboy_GolfR 2 года назад +1

      @@robertdean387 yeah you pretty much confirmed my suspicions on the switch. I really got to see the Elantra N in person, before I knock exterior. I'm sure seeing it on my phone doesn't do it justice. I was also under impression that all veloster N 2020 and earlier had 250 HP regardless of how it was optioned and they only bumped it up to 275 in 2021. At least that's how it was in the U.S. And I know this is a silly issue but why couldn't they add the awesome red NGS button to the Veloster N for 2022 like it is on the Kona and the Elantra?? I love that NGS (or rev matching for the manuals) red button. And I really like the leather wrapped steering wheel in the Elantra! Looks nice and thick and sporty like an M car wheel. Hyundai/Kia/Genesis are such incredible vehicles when you factor in value, reliability, build quality, warranty and some really great styling on most of their vehicles. I DO realize that this is a driver’s performance car but because it’s a sedan there has to be some expectation of putting passenger’s in the back, and that’s where it falls short. There are no split seats, no armrest, no vents, no USB ports, no pockets, no phone holders. Just a seat. It’s somewhat embarrassing.

    The driving dynamics is brought to you by Albert Biermann who was at BMW for a while as their M brains . Kia/Hyundai gave him good money to lure him over. Hopefully Hyundai has a next batter up because he’s retiring. FYI the head designer for Hyundai/ Kia was at Audi and they brought him over with Albert. Look really good at these cars a few yrs back and you can find Audi touches here and there.

    Personally, I think the niche this one fits in is for those of us who did the ol' street racer type Fast and Furious shit ages ago, but still want to drive a peppy car and not spend a life savings on it. I just got mine about 3 weeks ago, manual transmission and its only at 699 miles. I LOVE the car and love that it can be a bit adolescent with the exhaust pops, but doesn't stray too far into racer-ville like the Civic or Corolla.

    I was considering the hatch, which has a simpler design, but turns out the Elantra N is based on a newer platform and is the better vehicle, I think the car is that good that I am willing to look past its looks, although it definitely has character and is unlike anything else, so it is starting to grow on me, but I'll be driving it not looking at it so that's the main thing right?

    Don’t forget the 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain (most expensive components) warranty. Nobody does that, but HMG has since the 90’s. I truly believe HMG (Hyundai/Kia/Genesis) will replace Toyota/Lexus. It will take time, but it will happen as long as they don’t try to fix what’s not broken, which is Toyotas secret recipe for long-term success.

      He corrected it in the comments. What he glossed over though was the N grin shift button. It gives 10HP for a short period of time essentially bringing total HP to 286. AND, he failed to mention that the N wasn't selected because it comes after M, (he's poking fun of course), it references testing done on the car at Namyang and the Nürburgring tracks.
