I like the way that he was able maintained both a high field goal percentage and a high free throw percentage. This was sustained throughout his entire career. He didn't have an aerial game but because his moves were so powerful around the basket, he didn't need one. A great player at Notre Dame.
As a long time Bulls fan, I concur. Every time AD got the ball he was either fouled or got a high percentage shot. Sellers, Pippen (albeit young Pip), Grant (also young), couldn't guard him.
Because he was not a particularly good teammate and he existed in the era of the small forward and he was not better than, Bird, Dr. J, James Worthy, Nique or Bernard King or even Alex English...He would never never started ahead of any of those guys...but he does belong in the HOF
@@naturalfinish lol, Dantley is HOF but not top 75. As far as not being a good teammate, Joe Dumars would disagree with you. Dantley was the catalyst for the Pistons 5 year run. 87-91(3 finals). I'd take AD over King and Wilkins. Worthy a great player but also played on a great all time team... Dantley def better than English
@@rob77793elevenI can't take him over King. English or Nique, possibly. More so over Wilkins and maybe Worthy. Worthy is a tough call. Cause I feel there were better forwards in his day, BUT he was perfect for the Lakers' style and surrounding talent.
Alright you picked a perfect game to showcase Adrian Dantley. A forgotten great player. One of my early favorites, I started watching NBA at 9 yrs old around 1978-79
@@kenneth7826 Yes he was, I remember him with the Jazz, I liked Dr J, World b. Free, Ice man Gervin, Bernard King, Bird, Magic , Byron Scott, David Thompson, Moses Malone, Then Michael Jordan and it was over LOL 🤣 78-83 Era
He was great at reading the shot being missed and getting position in weakside. He had a big butt and was able to use it and head fakes to draw fouls vs guys 3 4 inches bigger. He was 6'4 at most. Left as Jr at Notre Dame. Avg 28 as soph 31 as jr. Rhey might have had a shot in 77 in he stayed.
Never seen a less impressive highlight real. Slow as a snail, completely relies on the refs bailing him out every time. I didn't think most of those were fouls, some maybe offensive, a lot aren't real clear, seemed like a no call would be more appropriate on most. The refs shouldn't reward someone who plays such an ugly gruesome game.
You know, that's how it looks. I saw this guys career and this is fairly typical of how he got it done. I don't recall seeing him make a jumper this whole clip. Always lived at the line. He was I believe, the only top notch scorer in his era, that often made more FTs than FGs in several seasons. He seemed to have/make almost nothing but basic layups and an occasional rolling hoop to the hoop. Then you realize he did this game after game, year after year. And recognize he had to have a subtle gulie about him to do it. It appears incredibly basic, then you realize almost no one can score this type of volume, especially at 6'4, 6'5. Even other great post players, Kareem, McHale, Hakeem, had memorable moves or shots and they were all giants. The guy (Dantley) was just uncanny. Some other great SFs just seemed to have to work much harder or you could see the noticeable craftiness. Dr J would swing the ball out this way, that way, go different directions. Bird used ball fakes, jab steps, step backs. Bernard King would catch the ball, fake L or R, spin the other way. Yet AD often seemed to be somewhat open underneath and just deposit a simple layup. The guy could have 30, 40, 50 pt games without hardly a seemingly difficult or memorable shot in his total. Yet an Erving, Bird, or King you left impressed in some manner. I guess you could say Dantley was like an anti Dominique Wilkins, the human highlight film. But Nique was a 6'8, 6'9 pogo stick, quick leaper, with range, too. Wilt said he never saw a 6'5 guy (Dantley) like that score inside. For those who want to mention Barkley, whole different matter. Much more bulk than AD. Anywhere from 40-60 lbs heavier.

AD was an excellent pre high flying NBA era player...More like a holder from the 50,s 60,s& early 70,s. His game wouldn't cut it in more modern Athletic times....
You would think. But no one ever really did. About the best you could do was score back on him. And guys could. You just had to have a high powered scorer who could match or come close to offset his production.

A great player at Notre Dame.
Adrian Dentley was an underrated player! He could scored the ball very efficiently !
Great video my friend.
By far the most efficient scoring small forward in NBA history
Possibly ever. And the most basic shots. But you don't get extra points for style.
I just watched some clips of Latrell Sprewell. Can 2 guys about 6'5 be more different? And still be productive.
Chicago is damn lucky that Detroit traded him in 1989. He regularly lit their asses up and they had no answer for him on defense.
He owns Jordan.
@karlmalone153 No he owned Pippen

Scoring over the taller more athletic Woolridge!
The original AD! Torching the Bulls pre-MJ!
Actually, he kept on torching them up until December of '88.
@@bubufubu yeah I know... 😁
Just a quick correction, this game was 1982 instead of 1984. Great find!
December 4, 1982
Only player in history to average 30ppg and 55%fg four straight seasons. How the hell this man not top 50 or top 75 is idocracy.

Hello good evening Steve!!!! Mr. dantley was awesome....

genius of making free throw
Especially drawing FTs!

Dantley didn't break a sweat
755 bad calls here ruingin game no bailouts
bravo he was great shooter
Bro what was this crowd I know the Bulls were terrible but damn 😂😂😂😂
He doesn't seem very spectacular. But he gets it done.
lot of bailouts should be no call
He played like his whole career. Either legit fouls or the refs bought his "game " or enough of each.
900 no call best call
cant scant the dant better than joradn or lew

Adrian Dantley would cook these dudes, especially with these cupcake fouls they call today. He'd foul out the whole team.
You wouldn't think. But it didn't make sense then, either.
He's like one of those guys at the YMCA who plays unorthodox n beats u the first game easily. But later you figure em out
The difference is that nobody figured him out for over a decade in the best league in the world.
Prime Adrian Dantley would beat you 10 out of 10 games.
