- Adrian Dantley was one of the most efficient scorers the game has ever seen. At just 6'5" He put the ball in the basket with more consistency than most of the big men of his era. He had the strength and size to bully smaller defenders, but a quick first step that would get him around the bigger defenders. He was crafty down low, could step out and hit a midrange shot and was one of the best finishers of his generation, but you almost never hear about a man who put up over 23,000 points in his career. And a big reason for that, is because that's all he did. He didn't play much defense, he wasn't one to pass the ball often and he didn't do much winning. Then when he finally found himself in a winning situation late in his career with the Bad Boys Detroit Pistons, he wouldn't accept a lesser offensive role in the name of the team success and publicly feuded with Isiah Thomas and Chuck Daly until he was shipped away en route to a couple more forgettable seasons before his final game in 1991. But Dantley was still a star almost everywhere he went, whether that was DeMatha high school under Morgan Wootten, playing for Notre Dame and upsetting the 1974 UCLA Bruins, led by Bill Walton and Jamaal Wilkes, to end their 88 game win streak, replacing Bob McAdoo, playing sidekick to Kareem Abdul Jabbar or being the star of the Utah Jazz after Pete Maravich and before John Stockton and Karl Malone, he was always a player you had to game plan for. But ego got in the way of winning, and his lack of team accolades doesn't see him get talked about very much. But a 6 time all star and two time scoring champ deserves some praise

The quiet assassin. Reminds me of Alex English. Quiet offensive soldiers who had quiet personalities but at the end of the game would have 30 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, etc.
That's why I liked both,and Tim Duncan had the same vibe. I'm not a fan of loud mouth trash talkers,the best way to get them out of their game is to act like they don't exist.
He played in a great era of wingmen like Bird, Worthy, Moncrief, Dominique, Aguirre, King, Iceman, English, Dr J, MJ, Nance, McDaniel, Blackman, Drexler, and Bobby Jones
His game is so alien now. Just doesn’t exist. Pure mid range & post ups. Crazy the points he scored without a 3 point shot.
@jmarcguy His game was not just midrange and post up shots.That is ludicrous.Dantley even though the 3 point shot did not exist in his college and high school and NBA career,he had outside shooting range beyond where the 3 point line exists today.That is why so many girls liked Dantley because as soon as he got across the half court line he was deadly.He hit perimeter shots beyond the top of the 3 point line especially in high school and college.He made long distance outside shots like layups.

As a Pistons fan, I'd love to see Mark Aguirre profiled. I know he was big-time at DePaul and had big seasons in Dallas, but in the pre-internet era, it was difficult to see the West Coast players that you heard so much about; most of my early Aguirre info was from box scores.

One thing nobody realizes is Dantley did all this while technically being handicapped. Man had one leg that was an inch longer than the other

Lived on the free throw line. Actually, is one of the few players that made the refs change their rules on how a player can lean in and get a foul. Refs openly said AD gets to the line too much and opposing teams would complain later in his career would effect his scoring.
One hell of a player and that is insane that he was unconscious when he and Vinnie Johnson butted heads.

Dantley Isiah conflict aside ,it wasn't the determining factor that resulted in Dantley trade . Dantley's unwillingness to comply with team first over personal achievements mantra by not being in friendly, accordance with Rodman occupying some of his minutes ,in a defiant stance of not even leaving the court so Rodman can be inserted inthe game was dantelys inevitable self imposed downfall . Family, coworkers ,have desputes ,but the most important caveat first and foremost is the team's common objective is the most pronounced goal ,dantely some how failed to grasp that mostly where he played . Not coincidentally the pistons captured two titles after he left .

I worked with a man who played football at Notre Dame in that time frame. Said he often played against Dantley and Shumate. He always said he held his own. Said he dominated Cornbread Maxwell in HS too.

If you look at the trades Dantley was involved in, the team that traded him always ended up getting a player of lesser value - the short end of the stick. The trade for Dantley saved Utah and, if memory serves, he was the first player who played with Kareem and was second in both scoring and rebounding. When the Buffalo Braves traded Dantley, this was the move that killed the Braves being in Buffalo. He was easily the most popular player on the Braves - he reflected the city, a true blue collar warrior. He led the American team to Olympic gold, incredible high school and college player. Frank Layden once said that the trade for Dantley was the best he ever made and trading Dantley away was his worst move. Utah would have had a lineup featuring Dantley, Karl Malone and John Stockton. Awesome player who does not get adequate recognition.

Long time Bulls fan and I remember Dantley abusing Brad Sellers on the block. Brad Sellers was 7ft tall but built like Kevin Durant. It was not pretty and the Bulls had to use switch Jordan onto him. Dantley just overpowered Sellers on the block.

One of the reasons why Utah traded Dantley was because Utah thought he would be an awful influence on a young Karl Malone. They thought AD would poison the Mailman's mind
I disagree that teams moved on from him then got good that absolutely is not true… The Pistons didn't touch the ECF or The Finals until he got there in 86-87… He led em in scoring if Zeke doesn't throw the ball to Larry Bird they go to the Finals in '87 '88 '89 in which he lead them in scoring, if not for the phantom call in '88 they are Champs.. In '89 leading them in scoring and on top of the EC they trade him now there is nothing that shows they wouldn't have gone again as they went in '88 and shoulda gone in '87 he was the guy that pushed em over bro its in black and white…

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan, Japanese-American and male. This all shows you where, when and HOW I grew up. You're probably around my age, perhaps 10 years younger (since you remember John Starks). I used to shoot John Starks 3-Pointers with my Wilson Street Ball!
He really is forgotten, if not totally dissed. Whenever they have a top 100 NBA players list of all time AD is routinely left off. I mean how can you deny his offense. Yeah, 30 points can be deceiving if you shoot a ton but AD would always be in the top 10 in field goal % and over 80% free throw guy. I mean, in the NBA, its hard to be amongst the top field goal % players when you score over 15, let alone 30. Most are like Cedric Maxwell and Artis Gilmore who are garbage point guys who just hang around the basket and avg. 10-12 points a game.

It's too bad Dantley's ego got the best of his talent. If he humbled down, he maybe would have won a ring or two with Detroit. Instead, he got traded to the Mavs who threw him away like dirty socks. When such a good scorer ends smitten by one of the weaker franchises of the early 90s, there's something wrong with the relationship indeed.
