Derrick Coleman: He was supposed to be THE GREATEST POWER FORWARD OF ALL TIME | FPP

  • He’s the ultimate story of Wasted Potential; he was thought many to be on his way to a hall of fame NBA career after putting together one of the greatest college careers in 4 years with Syracuse. He came to the Nets with the expectation to be the franchise saviour and it seemed like that what was going to happen as he, Kenny Anderson and Drazen Petrovic had the Nets looking primed for greatness. But with the tragic passing of Petrovic, things began to unravel and questions around Derrick Coleman’s attitude and work ethic began to get louder. He would eventually be traded to the 76ers to play with Allen Iverson and Jerry Stackhouse, but Stackhouse was traded and Coleman continued to struggle with his weight and injuries. He would sign with the Charlotte Hornets before the lockout season in 1999, but this would be a forgettable 3 years as his struggles with alcohol and weight became more prominent, he missed a lot of games, and again fell out of favour with coaching and management. He made his way back to a situation he liked by returning to Philly in 2002 and although he was committed, alcohol had a serious strangle on his life and he was never able to stay in shape or play like the star he was in New Jersey. But at this point he was also in his mid 30s and after a few seasons in Philly he would end his career with a brief stint in Detroit in 2005. Derrick Coleman was a generational talent and should be firmly in the discussion of greatest forwards of all time, but poor attitude, injuries and alcohol derailed his hall of fame career. But, he was still always regarded as a great teammate and even with him playing as a shell of his former self once he left New Jersey he still put some great numbers and one can only wonder how much better they could have been if he was in shape and invested.

Tools/ talent wise there is no PF that had more than him even to this day. His ball handling skill alone and ability to bring the ball up still kind of separate his from anyone you'd consider top 5 GOAT PFs. It just shows though mindset truly is what makes the true greats.

There are a number of power forwards who based on their skill levels should of been locks for the HOF, but from injuries to indifference they probably won't make it. In my opinion the list includes Antonio McDyess, Larry Johnson, Danny Manning, Rodney Rogers, and Tom Gugliotta who had injuries along the way, but as far as i'm concerned the likes of Shawn Kemp, Vin Baker, Roy Tarpley, Derrick Coleman, and to a lesser extent Rasheed Wallace were their own respective worst enemies as the skill sets of these 5 was undeniable.

I saw him play countless times at SU, and during his time with the nets I used to go see them quite often. Where he lost luster for me was the blank incident with Butch Beard. Coleman was a super talent and should have been a Hall of Famer. He was a # 1 overall pick in his draft class. In the NBA he lacked the hunger and tenacity to take his game to the elite level. He still was a good pro however.

DC was a killer on the Court but if he had today's media coverage they would be killing him for always having a bad game in big moments and having a attitude. He was still a seriously solid player. Him, Drazen, and Kenny Anderson should have been legendary

When you think about some of the greatest centers of all time like Willis Reed or Wes Unseld, Derrick Coleman would look like a super freak athlete in their time with his skill set.

So sad. The hype around him as a NBA rookie was unreal. I had a Derrick Coleman hologram trading card that was supposed to go up tremendously in value due to the expectations of his success and dominance in the NBA. 2 seasons later and he was already seen as a disappointment that won't reach the heights of the lofty expectations.

Put a pop filter on that mic, please :)
It's also distorting the audio level going into the computer. Pros use a moderate mic level (peaking at around -10dB) and use post-compression and limiting to get a huge sound.
