Dale Ellis: BAD decisions could have taken the NBA career AND LIFE of this Supersonics great | FPP

- After a great career at the University of Tennessee, he came to the NBA primed to be a star, but instead he would get drafted to one of the worst situations possible as he would stuck behind the great Dallas Mavericks Duo of Rolando Blackman and Mark Aguirre for his first three years in the league. He would finally get a trade to Seattle and go on to become one of the best scorers in the NBA and form a lethal trio for half of his time with the Supersonics along with Tom Chambers and Xavier McDaniel. The Sonics would make an improbably western conference finals run in 1987, behind NBA most improved player, Dale Ellis; but they’d never be able to replicate that success and Ellis is partly to blame for that. Not for his lack of contribution on the court, but instead the distractions he caused off of it as he found himself in some pretty serious situations which easily could have ended his career and maybe even his life. He overstayed his welcome and after a fight with Xavier McDaniel, he was shipped to Milwaukee, but this trade out of Seattle may have been exactly what was needed to save his career as he went on to have successful stints with the Bucks, then two years with David Robinson and the San Antonio Spurs where Ellis would become the first player in NBA history to make 1000 threes. He would have some great years on the Denver Nuggets where he would play a crucial veteran role and shooting role on their 1995 playoff team led by Dikembe Mutombo and Mahmoud Abdul Rauf; he would find himself traded back to the Seattle prior to ’98 where he would be reunited with former teammates Detlef Schrempf and Gary Payton, then after two years in Seattle, he finished his last NBA season as a Charlotte Hornet in 2000. His career could have easily gone sideways, but he cleaned it up right when he needed to and ended up going down as one of the greatest shooters the league has ever seen, and that’s why today’s episode is on Dale Ellis.

Dale Ellis is a underrated sharpshooter & desreves more respect!!!! 🔥🔥
Who disrespects him?
@FlowboyVegas1 A lot of modern day NBA fans 25 & under.
@tedcox6969 exactly bcuz they don't know nothing but King James and Chef Curry....Not taking anything away from those guys....
He can ball 🏀🏀🏀 3 out of five
@@Teddy42O Lmao
Yea right
Dale Ellis one of the first Marksman of the era
Dale Ellis scored 53 points on November 9th, 1989 in which the Seattle SuperSonics were defeated by the Milwaukee Bucks 155-154 in five overtimes.
Ellis is the guy that I've often wondered about in todays game. He was shooting from the more distant 3 point line (which, sometimes, I've thought they should bring back). These days, they'd have him averaging 10 shots from 3 and he'd be on a max contract. I don't remember him on that Dallas team. Blew up on the Sonics. Ellis was a major problem for the Lakers in those days and I remember reading a story where Michael Cooper and Byron Scott were talking about guarding him in the playoffs.
They did years ago
That shorter distance only lasted 2 or 3 seasons.
Since like 1997 it’s been back to it’s original distance
I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. Believe it or not, I shot TWO-handed until I was 19! Even more shocking, is that some of my three-pointers and free-throws actually went in! I have also had declining eyesight since 11th grade (1989-90). Well, in late 1992, I started shooting ONE-handed. And, finally, 4 years too late, I got glasses and contacts. In the SUMMER of 1994, I wore SOFT contact lenses, and shot ONE-handed, Dale Ellis form. My shooting accuracy (during shootarounds) SKYROCKETED!! Even at 50 in 2023, I often shoot Dale Ellis 3-Pointers, and can make 3 or 4 in a row.
That is amazing!
These videos are definitely some of my favorites keep up the good work buddy
Dale Ellis I remember him people saying he was good , but he was before my time.
There were plenty of great players before a lot of our times. But as far as Dale Ellis being a cold-blooded shooter and scorer.... YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT!!!! SHIT!!!! HE WAS NEARLY UNTOUCHABLE SOME NIGHTS!!!! 🏀💯
My Father and I were Season Ticket holders in Dallas from 1981-92. Saw Dale from the get go in the League. We called him Trigger in our section. Had such a quick release. Would come off the bench and hit a couple of 3's like that. Could fill it up. Then he went to Seattle and blossomed.
Your father and you or just your father you mean
First player in NBA history to make 1,000 three-pointers in a career.
Ahead of his time.
Don't know why he not in the HOF
This is the most eye opening, for me anyways, video that you have done so far. I didn't really start watching the NBA as a kid, until about the '92 season. I never knew Ellis was so good, as I remember him later in his career, and did not know the Sonics had such a good team, and that Chambers and Mcdaniels were that good early on in their careers. Another great video
16:45 I know where that is! It's the Mercer Street on ramp to Interstate 5! I've driven by that a ZILLION times! Well, I was born and raised in Seattle, and I'm 51 in 2024. Still, it hits home a bit.
Kevin Nash was Dale Ellis college teammate.
Big Daddy cool! That's awesome, I didn't realize that
@@ForgottenPlayerProfiles Nash (#43) is standing next to Dale in the team picture.
Damn I never knew that
I feel like Nash jackknife is literally akin to dunking a literal human being.
Wolfpac in.the house. One of my all-time favorite wrestlers.
You should do one on Alvin Robertson. He had a HOF type start to his career yet messed it up
Alvin was SMACKED in the face REAL hard by Shaq !!! He said something to Shaq that set him off. OUCH. LOL.
@@powerbadpowerbad Alvin was about to try and kill Shaq lol
@@AlbertPullhoez Like I said, don't know what Alvin said to Shaq-Daddy to make him fist punch him in the head 9 and it was a good hard smack too ) LOL.
Alvin smacked him first@@powerbadpowerbad
@@powerbadpowerbadShaq was just a yellow rookie then dude Robertson would have destroyed him
Reggie Miller passed him in career 3s for good in the 1997-98 season. But I wonder if he benefited from the shortened arc in 1995-97 in allowing him to catch up, whereas Ellis shot with the longer arc in the 1980s and early '90s, but wasn't playing as many minutes and getting as many shots as Reggie later in his career.
Love this series, man! Great work!
Hell yeah I love it..wish he would do a Rolando BLACKMAN documentary
Very quietly had a great career. 4 straight 20 point seasons, career 40 percent 3 point shooter
Borderline HOF career and was a winner too.
Gratitude.
Ps Those 87 - 88 Lakers were amazing
Those 80s Mavs. Crazy how many really good but not great players were there at some point
Do one on joe Johnson a 7x all star that everyone already forgot about
ISO Joe!
One of the greatest jump shooters in nba history
That Sonics team was deadly from 3!!!
Dale Ellis was a monster from three, especially in his Seattle years. Imho he was a slightly better 3pt shooter than Reggie Miller during the late 80s and through the 90s. And Chris Mullin was just a slight notch below Dale as well. But Dale was putting up 48% in '88-'89 which is insane as he nearly made HALF his threes. His 3 point percentage was better than a lot of guys whole field goal percentages. Tbh, I didn't like Jim Jackson as a player but tbh I think he may have been just as good a 3pt shooter as Ellis - but AFTER he turned 30 I mean. As post-30 years old, Jackson had an amazing 5 seasons where he shot over 40 percent and three seasons where he shot 45%, 46% and 47% from the three. Though the difference is that Ellis was a great shooter from his rookie season on. But Jim Jackson had a stretch of seasons where he may have been the most dangerous three point guy in the whole league - and funnily enough, it was right after Ellis retired that Jackson became a straight up deadly sharp shooter. Almost like D.E. passed his powers on to Jim.🙂And I didn't know anything about
Dale's off the court issues so great research and presentation. Thanks again for another great vid man. Being stuck at home with an injury and barely able to walk is boring as hell and it's killing me. But between your channel and Basketball Time Machine channel - I can sit on my porch in this nice weather and it makes the situation a lot easier to bear. So thanks for that brother.
Thank you
Deserves a spot in the hall of fame
Lmao what u smoking?
When asked who was the best shooter of all time, Larry Bird said,
"There are so many.. Dale Ellis comes to mind"
There is no higher praise than that
2K from idk what year made me learn more about him and I love his game. As a Nets fan, he reminds me of Drazen. A great shooter but much more than that.
Playing eras mode with my brothers , dale Ellis is a shooting GOD
@@Youdoxxikill Straight sharpshooter AND tall too. I think it was 2k15 MyTeam that put me on to him. Haven’t played 2k24 yet but I love playing eras because of using players like that.
You do such awesome work! Do you have patron? Also here's a solid list! Doug Christie, derrick Coleman, and John starks. Oh yeah Jimmy Jackson. Lol
I was there for his 3k 3pt vs kings! My first NBA game in person and at the Alamodome
5:19 I did NOT know, that Dale Ellis could sky and dunk like that!
Very underated
Dale ellis, reaf lafrentz, and hornacek would be stars in the league today.
Dale desert eagle Ellis ❤
Maybe the best NBA content creator around at this point of time. Well edited videos and a great series that actually gets u excited when a new episode drops
I appreciate that
Watched him against Phoenix so many times. His release was so quick and wet.
I was born in Seattle in 1973, Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. I was a senior in high school in 1990-91. I was at Dick's Hamburgers getting lunch that afternoon. In the building where the Sonics executive offices were at the time, I saw the elevator door open. All of a sudden, not one, but TWO 6'7" men came out, fighting with each other!! I went to a payphone (payphone!), called 9-1-1, and reported that TWO men were in a fistfight! I was asked by the dispatcher, "Do you know the names of the perpetrators?" I said, "Dale........Ellis!" And, "Javier McDaniel." On the condition of anonymity, one Sonics player said to me, "We're getting pretty tired of his (Dale Ellis') stuff."
Imma educate myself here, only knew him for being a great shooter. Can you do Grandmomma, Mighty Mouse and Big Country(would be cool to talk about the first 2 guys that were consider "stars" on Vancouver and Toronto)
Fun fact: Dale Ellis played basketball with professional wrestler Kevin Nash at UT.
You should cover the first player to be drafted by the Miami Heat
Please do one on Joe Wolf or David Wood.
Request for a vid on Xavier McDaniel
I use him a lot in the MyEras mode
Wow i never realized he was 6'7". I always thought he was around 6'4".
The Wives got into that’s wild smh!!!! They was going back to they ladies talking ish about each other hahaha
Bring back our Sonics!
LaPhonso Ellis.
Dallas was LOADED!!!
Xavier McDaniel soon please 😊
Do a Tom Chambers video!
Do Josh Smith next
Dale “The Chin” Ellis! 😊
“Dale Ellis n them”
We need Steve Francis vid 🔥
Do one on Sean Elliott
I can do one on Sean Elliott. You might not like it though
@@mongoslade277 I'll like it 👌🏿 I'm a 80's baby
I always thought the Ellis, Chambers, X Man Sonics were as good as Payton Kemp.
I was born in Seattle in 1973. Payton, and even Kemp, were SO much better defensively, than Ellis and Chambers. Kemp was a 10+ rebounds per game, in his prime. Ellis and Chambers could score, but were one-dimensional, compared to Payton and Kemp.
It seem like he average 5 drinks a game too wtf he's a legend but with demons
Even tho Dale Ellis had the off the court stuff going on I still was a big fan of his game and shooting Form , I enjoyed watching him go at it against Michael Jordan and other stars of the league ( One of the Leagues Most Under rated Shooters) A .403 career 3 point percentage is solid. Went from bench Player to 4 straight Seasons of 20 plus points per Game. 1st NBA Player to hit 1k 3 point shots Dale should be in the hall of fame in my opinion
Although everyone know about him for saying and doing stupid stuff. I think sprewel deserves some love. As a kid o was amazed an how fast he was and he covered jordan lome no other player ive ever seen
Yeah, especially choking his coach-TWICE !!! LOL. I don't care what you're going thru, you don't choke your coach. The players union went to bat for Spree,he should've done the entire nba suspension.
Dale ellis biggest rival: Cars
One of the best "one trick ponys"ever. A shooters shooter.
Never heard of him
Damn athletes get away with everything.
AGREED.They get away with-TOO-much for my taste. That's why they act a fool most of the time, knowing they'll get a slap on the wrist.
Suggestion: Sarunas Marciulionis. It's pronounced Mar-see-UUH-Lee-OH-nis, not MARSH-a-LOA-nis.
A great player with some emotional/behavioral issues.
AGREED.Especially the accident he was drunk in,no excuses.
if you ask me the 93 and 96 sonics weren't as elite as the 80 sonics
It’s pronounced like Vawl not Vole.
Underrated player in the late 1980's but a bad person off the court
For the longest I swore he was Monte Ellis dad😅
You're not the only one lol
@@primoxxl71 😂
Pay the man. Easy fix sonics
Put this man in the HOF already!
Kemp and Ellis salty at supersonics
$500 fine for then 2nd highest paid guard in NBA 😂
Hilarious
Like a $5 fine to the avg person
Actually, back then it would be more like a $1 fine
Very nice retrospective. But, c'mon, if you're gonna talk about a player's career in college, learn how to pronounce the team name. Vols rhymes with walls. It's not pronounced like the rodent (vole)..
ya know, like "Volunteers"
Dale Ellis > Bird
Don't at me.
What's up with all this crap about his personal life? WHO CARES??? My goodness.
All nba players have morality clauses in their contracts and when they screw-up it's news.
You do such awesome work! Do you have patron? Also here's a solid list! Doug Christie, derrick Coleman, and John starks. Oh yeah Jimmy Jackson. Lol
I always thought that Rich Boy rapper from the 2000s was his son lol
