Adrian Dantley vs Celtics 1987 ECF - Scoring

  • Adrian Dantley is arguably the greatest scorer in NBA history. After leaving the Jazz franchise he joined to young, very talented Pistons team. Chuck Daly wanted AD to make Pistons half-court offense more effective and it worked. Dantley ability to play in isolations made him doubled more than any other Pistons player and created space for teammates.
    In his first year with the Pistons, his team advanced to Eastern Conference Finals when they faced veteran Celtics team. Dantley had huge task defending Bird and being main offensive weapon for the Pistons. After tough 7 games they lost and many people claim that Pistons could have won, had Dantley not got injured in 3rd quarter. He played very well in elimination game and Detoit team desperatly needed buckets from him. The game were still close after this unlucky incident but more experienced Celtics took advantage of this situation and advanced to the NBA Finals.
    This video is focused on Dantley ability to score in multiple ways. He was master of post game despite lack of height and he was deadly midrange shooter. He was good transition finisher and great from triple threat. Celtics threw on him many defenders but it didn't work. Enjoy past his prime, but still great Adrian Dantley who destroyed whole Celtics offense.

    As a Boston fan I remember the 1987 ECF like it was yesterday. I cringed everytime AD got the ball. Mchale playing on his broken foot couldn't stop him, Bird couldn't. They put DJ on him and had Bird cover joe Dumars in game 7, Dumars had 35 pts because Bird kept doubling Dantley. very underrated SF Dantley. A big what if is if Utah never traded Dantley, they would have a starting 5 of Stockton, Jeff Malone, Dantley, K. Malone and Mark Eaton with Thurl Bailey coming off the bench.

    • @haroldmccoy6748

      Dantley's penchant for hogging the ball ,and literally killing the possession clock wouldn't have allowed offensive cohesion to exists ,nor allow for a young Karl Malone to develope .Bailey would rarely get significant minutes because of a pouting Dantley ,utahs head coach disdained dantley's selfish attitude .

      @@haroldmccoy6748 I'm more optimistic about it than a lot of you are..I think it'd be a scary team. Dantley worked well in Detroit, they should've won the '88 Finals, as they had that last game until everyone knows what happened. They also got robbed here in the '87 ECF.. just one mistake cost them dearly but they had this game as well and this is all with Dantley & Isiah both on the court doing their thing. It was working. Why wouldn't it work in Utah? Isiah worked best with Dantley though, he knew how to get everyone involved and still feed Dantley and do his own thing.

    What people seem to be misunderstanding is back then illegal defense was a thing. So what that means is that you literally can't move more than 5 feet from the man you're guarding (so long as a shot attempt isn't happening, then you can go rush to contest the shot with more than 1 person. The Pistons did this often to Jordan.) or you'd get called for illegal defense. So literally everyone was left on an island, which is why you see a whole lot of iso ball and a whole lot of "bad" defense. Even with handchecking and hard fouls if no one if you only have to worry about 1 person contesting your shot and the big man is late coming over to contest there ain't much the defender can do but hope you miss. And gifted scorers didn't miss.

    • @str8duval
      @str8duval 6 лет назад

      Actually you can always throw the hard double team and you could still get away with not guarding your man if the ball handler was below the 3 point line trying to feed the post. Plus you forgot to mention the center could just camp out in the lane back then

    This is a great video, thanks. As a Pistons fan, I'll forever be thankful to Adrian Dantley. Regarding his trade away from the Pistons, I really feel like they needed to get Rodman more minutes, and whether or not they knew it at the time of the trade, Aguirre accepted it better than Dantley would have.

    I loved Dantley way more than I did Aquirre. I hated Detroit traded him in 88 but they had to because of the beef he had with Thomas. And they needed a more fluent offense because once Dantley got it, everyone would just be standing around watching because they knew Dantley wasn't going to pass it...lol.

      I just started watching videos on Dantley, and I have a feeling I know the reason why Detroit went further in the playoffs after they traded him. He's as gifted a scorer as Carmelo Anthony, but also has the same bad habit of making his team's offense screech to a halt whenever he isos.

      It's possible. But overall, I'm not a fan of the way that Dantley plays.
      I think he has a lot of positives. A very good shooter around 18 feet in. A master of post and body positioning. Great touch around the rim, which helped him score easily when he got great position. He was also deceptively quick, and used change of speeds to his advantage.
      Despite his positives, one anecdote sums up what I think about Dantley's overall game. During the off-seasons, he spent time training against his brothers and friends, and played 1 on 3/4/5 against all of them. He trained this way to score through contact. But for me, he trained stricty in iso 1v1 or 1vMany situations. And based on the videos I've seen of Dantley' play so far, he doesn't stray far from that philosophy.
      Dantley is clearly not a mindless chucker. He scored very efficiently and gets to the line. However, the way he plays the game basically takes his other 4 teammates out of the equation. The very best offenses and teams never played this way. Sure, most of your teammates are less skilled than you, not can they shoot as well as you. But if your lumbering big men don't get regular touches on offense during the first 30-40 minutes of a game, don't expect them to suddenly be able to hit an open shot when you pass out of a triple team during clutch situations. This isn't about simply making your teammates happy, but rather, putting them in a situation in which they are comfortable and can succeed when called upon.
      Ultimately, Dantley doesn't really have seemed to think much of his teammates other than as obstacles who should move over to the other side of the court. No matter how efficient one player is, he can't succeed without his teammates in a 5v5 game.

      @@charlesjohnson1574 No they wouldn't have won a NBA championship with dantley's penchant for selfishness and his offense stiffling game ,horrible defense .It's fully documented, Dantley's historically selfish ultruistic attitude simply wouldn't allow for sufficient playing time for rodman ,it literally stymied offensive cohesion because his game destroyed offensive rhythm, his blatant refusal to actually come off the court after a time out to be relieved sent a horrible message which could divide a lockerroom .After 88 , Dantley's decorum and game weren't fit for a championship team . Isiah Thomas actually was never stated as requesting Dantley's trade ,not by himself,the headcoach nor gm ever stated Isiah Thomas was involved ,and if he did ,he has the cache as a superstar,team leader ,teams best player like a Magic who got a NBA championship winning headcoach fired to do so . The Isiah Thomas hate has always baffled me when he paid his dues ,answered ever challenge ,and became a great basketball player,Boston native , NBA historian bill simmons calls Isiah Thomas the greatest traditional point guard EVER . The only small man to be his teams best player to lead them to a NBA championship,which Zeke did twice ,if not for the fraudulent phantom foul against Lambeer guarding Kareem in the finals seconds of game 6 of the 88 NBA finals ,with Detroit leading by 1 and the series 3-2 ,the pistons under Isiah Thomas leadership tenure win 3 🏆's. Fellow NBA veterans like Steve Kerr called John Stockton the dirtiest NBA player he's ever competed against,Danny Ainge antics often riled up opponents ,but isiah Thomas gets canonized as a monster ,placed in a supposed subservient role when other players are mentioned. Dantley's stay in Utah , where he had his best career stats ,his headcoach literally disdained him ,stated no team will ever win a championship with him . I'm objectively confused by this Dantley was the supposed pistons championship savior ,when the franchise most important player was Isiah Thomas, who actually made personal stats sacrifice to help nurture his team into a championship team .Isiah Thomas could have easily been a 20 point per game double digits assists career guy ,but he rationally grasp the bigger optic . Several seasons he literally avg 20 plus it's double digits assists ,in regular season and post season won all-star and a finals MVP ,set NBA records ,why would isiah Thomas have to defer to Adrian Dantley in any fashion ??? Magic didn't to a NBA championship winning headcoach,nor all-star teammate norm nixon . Zekes sacrifice nurtured Dumars into a all-star,finals MVP and a hofer ,what player did dantley's game, sacrifice and his leadership help improve into a significant performer who achieved excellent personal accolades ? The outright, passive agressive, subconscious, subconscious, typical emotional, nonobjective trolling Isiah Thomas gets is ridiculous. How bad,sports commentators stated that if Chris Paul wins 1 championship,he surpasses Isiah Thomas in the point guard hierarchy 😅😂🤣. His fictional championship,evaporates zekes 2 trophy's ? Should a been 3 ! Can't make this stuff up .

    It wasn’t dantleys fault they lost in 87 & 88 then became stagnant when they made the trade in 88-89 for mark. I think they wanted to change the chemistry to more ball movement and I have to admit as good as AD was his reputation was a ball hog who played no defense, I think his name was the black hole once he got the ball it never came back. But I never saw issues with him as I watched their runs back then he was a hell of a scorer. But the pistons beat themselves back then 1. Isaiah inbounds play 2. Vinnie & dantley bumped heads giving AD a concussion 3. Bad fouls in crucial games so it wasn’t ADs fault but mark Aguirre did bring a more versatility to Detroit.

    • @iandouglass7135
      @iandouglass7135 5 лет назад +1

      You're quite right. Aguirre could perform within the offense within grinding it to a halt, and he was willing to post up without making everyone else run to the other side of the building. Within the Pistons' offense, it made far more sense for Dumars and Isiah to be the guys playing while facing up to the basket, able to shoot jumpers, drive to the basket, kick the ball out, or feed the post, and they could do it from either side within the flow of the offense. Passing to Dantley usually shut every other option down, and you were committed to a single course of action; Dantley shoots, or passes out of a double team with three seconds left on the shot clock and the guards have to force up a rushed shot.

      Dantley didn't guard Worthy at all throughout the series, he guarded AC Green. Not to mention that Worthy didn't deserve the FMVP, Magic was by far the best player in the finals. By the way, had Pistons won the title in 1988 (and they were really close), Dantley should have got the FMVP award, as he was far more consistent than Thomas.
      Pistons won the title in 1989 against Bird-less Celtics, injured Bucks and Lakers without two starters in the lineup. This just proves one of the flaws of efficiency calculations. Dantley shot a VERY high percentage, but he would hold the ball forever, and if he didn't like his options, he would pass the ball to someone else (usually a guard like Dumars or Isiah) with three seconds left on the clock, and they would have to force up a garbage shot. So, Dantley shot 55%, but he turned the other players he played with into sub 40% shooters. This is one of the main reasons he was traded from every team he ever played for; he gummed up the offense with a style that suited him, but he gave the ball to his teammates in compromising shooting positions which ultimately hurt his team. The TEAM'S field goal percentage actually improved after he left.
