The only people that don't give George Gervin his credit for being great is the younger generation who didn't see him play or folks who hasn't watch videos on him. @mericanmodi8479 No kidding his scoring efficiency is elite. I surprised to find he had four consecutive years of over 100 blocks too. Former longtime NBA coach Dick Motta said he it seemed like he could score the ball whenever he wanted. Don't doubt it for second.
His finger roll was so smooth you can play Curtis Mayfield's song Superfly and you can feel how fluid his shot selection took for him to be such a weapon on the court.

You have to respect MJ's ability to humble himself and learn from the greats like Ice was an underestimated trait. I think he appreciated seeing that from Kobe and other players that tried to learn from him. Like many greats before him, MJ was a student of the game.

I remember a friend of mine coming back from a Spurs Clippers game in 1982 and saying how amazed he was that Ice played the entire game completely dry / without a bead of sweat.

You ain't lying man. Hands down nobody... If you look at how he was releasing the ball sometimes, due to the movement of the defenders, George was rolling that mug off the side of his hand sometimes and still dropping it straight down in the bucket so smooth all nets... Swish!!!!!

In 1984/85 season they played twice against each other. Mike scored 45 and 38, Gervin 28 and 19. First game was won by the Bulls, second by the Spurs. In 1985/86 season they were teammates in the Bulls.
They were barely teammates though, jordan missed 64 games so they never really built chemistry
George was Washed up when he got to Chicago.

I believe Gervin, much like Julius Erving and Rick Barry, should be rated far higher on the list of all-time great. They are not because their time in the ABA stunted their career NBA stats. Gervin was a four-time NBA scoring champ, Barry an all around force who is the only player in history to lead the NCAA, ABA and NBA in scoring, and Erving was Dr.J, the greatest player in ABA history.

Gervin FG% was 52%, for his career, not just (1) season. In other words, for an entire 12 years and 26,000+ points in the NBA and ABA, Gervin made 1 shot for every 2 shots he took.....think about that!!!!!.

Gervin was in a very elite club of players who were so smooth that it looked like they slowed the film down for him, while the other players frantically tried to stay with him as he found the slightest opening to the basket. Dr. J was another who had the same smooth style.
Iceman was unstoppable, defenders had no chance facing him.

Durant is the 2.0 version of the Ice Man, with a three-point shot narrowly separating them. Seems that Gervin continues to be historically underrated. Perhaps history would've treated him differently had the Spurs defeated Washington in the 1979 ECF and won the title over Seattle.

Durant doesn't have the depth and variety of shots that Gervin had. Also, at 6'8" and just a 180 lbs soak and wet, Gervin was a very physical player as well.....he spent much time in the paint and post. His post game was unstoppable as well.

George Gervin couldn't win a championship.
His hook shot alone would give him 20-30pts a game in todays game. His hook was so smooth and unexpected. It would be truly hard to guard and stop that shot then on top of that he can switch it and jelly shot.

I wonder if Gervin had any idea of how Great MJ would be? Much appreciated, I loved watching Iceman play. Pure magic and so entertaining to see his flair. To be honest, I forgot about G. Shame on me and the NBA for not showing more of his highlights. Players in the days past didn't take games off to rest and play when they felt like it,they played every game. That's why Lebron James will never be in my mind the Goat. Too much credit. Great, but there's no comparison to Michael Jordan. Hands down.
Every year i hope there is a player in the NCAA that plays offense like George Gervin. There never is. The smoothest player to ever play the game of basketball. The only player who in real time many times appeared like he was performing in slow motion highlight mode. Never be another player like him.

On you tube put in Bernard King vs George Gervin game. Gervin shoots falling out of bounds and behind the backboard it goes in but somehow ice made it look like everyone else can do it when nobody can.

Interesting video, especially since MJ was presumably very unhappy about the trade that brought Gervin to the Bulls and presumably MJ did not treat Gervin to well that year, which in turn helped Gervin decide to retire earlier than planned. I missed when the video was shot. Maybe it was before the "freeze out."

I am really conflicted when it comes to George Gervin. For one, I absolutely love and adore players who developed a truly unique and personal style of playing basketball. Gervin is second to none in that department. But I have a problem with players who only play offense. Comes play-off time that comes to an end right quick. And Gervin is player number 1 or 2 (the other one is obviously Pistol Pete) on the All Offense/No Defense All Star team.
Nothing can be further from the truth. Gervin was a pretty good defender. He is second behind only Jordan for blocks in a season for a guard.
Gervin played defense early in his ABA/NBA career and was pretty decent. Obviously, he was no defensive stopper. But when you can score the Ball like Ice, you get yourself 4 other defensive stoppers. Remember, @ 51% career FG percentage for every 2 shots Ice took, he got you 1 bucket.
As I said, this might cut during the regular season but there are no titles without being defensive minded, no matter how good you are in offense. When GSW won their last title and played Denver in the playoffs, for one Curry played stellar defense and GSW targeted Jokic on offense with great success. He cleaned that up and Denver won a title. (obviously, it helped to have key players back). There is no star or franchise player who was indifferent towards defense with much playoff success. Take Barkley, a beat on offense, a minus defender. If he had turned himself into plus defender the year they played the finals against the Bulls, he might have had his title. @@citizenscapital2458

lot of people tend to forget how much about the game Jordan knew. He wasn't just the GOAT, he learned and was relentless in the mental aspect of the game as well as his physical tools. Also Iceman finished out his career as Jordan's teammate.

I never understood when the Ice Man played with the Bulls when Michael got hurt that year and the Ice Man carried the team throughout the season. When Michael came back and they played against the Celtics in the playoffs but the Ice didn't get much time when him and Mike should have been the starting guards. John Paxton a good shooter should have been coming off the bench .What was Doug Collins thinking?
Yeah it's nice to see Jordan doing this interview of Gervin, but you know Jordan didn't want Gervin and complained to the Bulls organization when he found out they made the trade for Ice.
Jordan said in the article he wasn't too happy about it. You could probably still pull the full article up on Google somewhere.
See Jordan knew how raw Gervin was, and he thought by Ice coming to the Bulls, he would steal his shine.
I believe if Jordan and Gervin played on the court together when Mike came back off that injury in the playoffs against the Celtics they would at least won two games instead of getting swept.
I don't think they would have beat the Celtics but the series would have been a lot more interesting. Doug Collins kissed Jordan's a** and knew Mike didn't like George coming to Chicago his team and his town so that's why Doug didn't use Gervin in the playoffs like he should have just sucking up to Jordan.

Umm Doug Collins didn't coach that 85-86 Bulls team that was Stan Albeck...Doug came into the fold as coach for the 86-87 season til he got replaced for Phil Jackson in 89 after the Bulls lost to the pistons in the ECF.
If he played D better, he would be akin to Pippen yet better scorer. Penny Hardaway was same height as them and I would say, just about a combo of both until he got knee injuries. Ice was so quick, agile and smooth that, y'all may not have ever heard this but... he was hard to foul, too!
The Iceman was unique there was NEVER a player like him,so many different shots,different angles, lethal from outside,range on his jumper,creative around the basket and doing it all like he was ready to take a nap,there has NEVER been a more efficient offensive player ,high shooting % very good free throw shooter and had hops when he was a young buck, been watching NBA for forever at 70 years old, Ice was one of a kind
what's funny is the difference between him and Jordan,Jordan just shot up anything. he tooked so many risky shoots while Gervin looked for the right shots. He waited, He had patience. and then he had that beautiful release. and that's difference Like Jordan just put up anything and that's why his percentage wasn't all that great, why he will never be the best of all time for me.
