That audio when Jordan says “he was a threat but being compared to him... I took offence to that” was an audio clip when he was talking about Clyde Drexler 😂😂 I see u Jimmy
"he was too much handle" of course on that particular game Jordan was too much but it does not mean that Len bias is easy to handle-he scored 16 points so jordan and team mates can not easily handle len bias. words can make one so superior like saying that Jordan is too much to handle. if it is true. Jordan could have scored hundreds or even 50 points in that game.
That clip of Jordan saying "i'm not saying he wasn't a threat, but being compared to him.. I took offense to that" was talking about Clyde Drexler in the 92 playoffs.

Man...MJ's fundamentals were just PERFECT. His control - the way he squares up to the basket no matter what situation he is in.....just amazing. We don't see it now
Coaches were real coaches back then. If you were showing that you were not striving to be fundamentally grounded, no matter how much of a freak athlete you were, you couldn't get on the court with the starters. These young guys today think it's all about athleticism. Check out Luka Doncic. Dominating with pure fundamentals.
That's is the main reason Lebron can't ever measure up to the GOAT. No matter if he plays for 15 more seasons, surpasses every record statistically, and win 10 more rings. He still wouldn't come close.

It's hard for people who weren't alive then to understand how much Len Bias' death shocked and changed the sports world. College basketball was more popular than the NBA back then and Bias was a star. In the aftermath, every college and every pro sports league started aggressive drug testing. It also helped those wanting harsher prison penalties for drug dealers to get legislation passed.

Everytime I watch a video regarding Len Bias, I get emotional. I lived about 10 mins from him, he was about 4 years older than me and I can remember like it was yesterday when the news broke about him passing. It was like a weird fog of silence, sadness and disbelief over just about all the ballers in the area. It took a while for that "fog" to lift. It's hard for folks who weren't born or very young to appreciate just how good and fun to watch Bias was. Grew up in one of the projects in DC called 'Simple City'! His father Butch Bias and his mother Lonise Scott lived two doors from each other. I was about 9 when Lenny and my little brother were born about 2 months apart. My mother would babysit Lenny and sometimes Lenny's mother would babysit my brother. We put a basketball hoop on a light pole that had asphalt on it between the end of two of the rows of houses. Lenny's grandfather and uncle on his mother's side we're about the same height as he became. One of his mother's Brothers about 2 years older than me,, tapped me to play in the NBA when I was about 10. I was basically King Hooper of the little guys. Lenny's uncle had serious game. I moved away when Lenny was about four but during my visits the kid would be on that little Court and I remember them calling him Scooter or something. I started to hear about Lenny at northwestern. One of my nephew's attended the school at the same time and some of the boxers at the Takoma Langley gym attended there too. I was helping the coach with the boxing team. Although I followed Maryland basketball closely I didn't know he was the same little Lenny until after he died. I was training at a job about two blocks from Colefield House when they were having the funeral. One of my sisters called me that night and said she saw a lot of our friends we grew up with at Lenny's funeral. It was his mother father uncles and aunts brothers and sisters. Lenny's father's mother's name was Mrs Beale. She apparently had Lenny's father before she was married therefore the 'Bias' name. I did notice he had that straight up jumper that all of us had in Simple City but I didn't make the connection. I did make it to his brother Jay's funeral and I taught their little brother as a substitute teacher at Northwestern. I introduced myself to him. I was really sad to hear what happened to Lenny even before I knew who he really was. The guy who supposedly supplied the drugs to Lenny I don't remember him because he's so much younger than me but I knew some of his older siblings as well as another guy who I believe was shot at some point. By then we had moved to Northeast DC from Southeast DC. It was good to see this documentary but also kind of sad. It's always a big; 'what if'.
Thanks for making such a great video that showcases the greatness of both Lenny and MJ. I played against Lenny on a playground at Central High School in DC in '78. 3 on 3. And it was intense. We were the same age, end of 8th grade. Lenny was the first guy to ever dunk on me - shoelaces went by my face. Great player but even better person. His competitive fire was off the charts, too.
@@doubletake1238 Don't hate on how he lit his fire on the court. When did MJ do something bad off the court? Like he said he was taught to play the game that way by his elders, "If you don't want to play that way, don't play that way...." Nuff Said.

Jimmy - I have come to really enjoy your videos - especially your storytelling and breakdown of data. I SO appreciate your revealing and telling this story of Len and Michael's relationship. I grew up right by the University of Maryland and was in high school when Len Bias played for MD. I was active duty Navy - coming back home to Maryland from my deployment - when I got off the subway. People were weeping at the bus station as I walked from the subway. That's how I found out about Len Bias' death. I was crushed. Obviously we can only dream about what his career may have been. Videos like yours give him the respect I think he continues to deserve.

The quote when Jordan says “he was a threat but being compared to him I took offense “ was not referring to Len Bias. It was from the Last Dance documentary and he was talking about Clyde Drexler.
Michael Jordan’s athletic prowess was always upfront and wonderful, amazing to see. The talented, competitive, virtual superhero of a player who seemed to defy the laws of physics. But he had another side that many people never got to see. His kindness towards young kids, especially the disabled fans who came to see him play. After having 5 girls my Uncle and Aunt Ron and Jane Axium decided that they were called to adopt or foster 4 disabled kids. The first was my cousin Christopher. When Chris was adopted doctors told my aunt and uncle that Chris would never walk, might never talk clearly and would almost certainly die before 25. That was in the early 80’s. My aunt and uncle brought in half the neighborhood to pattern Chris, move his arm and leg muscles in ways that would increase nerve connections, help speech and coordination and hopefully extend his life. It worked. They did everything they could to mainstream and give Chris great experiences. One of those was taking Chris to Bulls games. By then MJ was a superstar and an amazing phenomenon to watch. Beauty in motion, top of the world. But somehow, he noticed the families with disabled perks and got to know them. Chris was 4’8? Jordon towered over him. But he especially liked these kids who showed such raw adoration for him. He got them great seats, near the team, so he could see their reactions, gave them signed posters and basketballs and on one special day gave Chris a full Chicago Bulls Uniform complete with shoes, socks, trunks, shirt (#24) and a personally signed basketball. For as long as I can remember whenever I walked over to their house, Chris was outside in uniform dribbling that ball. As time went on his coordination got better and better and he eventually took drum lessons at a music shop around the corner which would have stunned those early doctors. Of course, Chris is a wonderful human being who I admire for his joy and love of family. Here’s the thing though. In all those years in Chicago, I never saw a press release or story about Jordan’s acts of kindness to Chris and young fans like him. He had an impact on Chris’s life and transferred some small part of his drive to Chris. Enough so that one chilly fall Chicago night while Chris was sleeping on the back porch, “camping out” which he liked to do. He woke up when a disturbed kid who tried to set a number of churches on fire also, set their back porch on fire possibly because the kid was cold. Chris heard the back doorbell ring because the flames of the back porch working their way inwards and shorted the wires ringing the bell. This woke Chris, who rather than just running out the front door in panic, woke up his parents then his sisters and brothers upstairs. They all got out of the house literally seconds before a flash back from the open back door engulfed the interior of the house with flames. The kid with Downs Syndrome had saved 11 people’s lives that night. How much of that was enabled by Jordan’s kindness? I don’t know. Much of the credit goes to his immediate family and the many dozens in the neighborhood who volunteered helping to pattern The 4 adopted and fostered kids. But he certainly didn’t hurt.
I attended the five-star Camp back in 1977. That's where I met Rick Pitino. Rick Pitino is the best coach in the universe you taught me so much at the camp. I wish I played when we had a 3-point line. Who knows what I would have done I could have been a Steph Curry LOL
In an alternate universe, Michael Jordan and Len Bias traded championships throughout the 90s (Bulls vs. Celtics) in what would eventually become one of the greatest rivalries of all time.
My older brother told me about this guy when I was a kid, he said he was going to be up there with Jordan. I told him, "no one will ever be as good as Michael, not even close!" I asked him what were his stats in the NBA and my older brother said he didn't have any. I proceeded to say "exactly, trash." He chuckled and said "if only you knew." Thanks for the video brother, really opened my eyes today.
I saw him live and these clips cannot capture the awe of watching him play outmatched in the post against the Grant brothers and other better equipped teams and crush them. I followed Jordan but I recorded Bias...I can still remember the very moment that I heard that he had overdosed. No words...

I was a Duke student from 1982-1986. Len Bias was, and remains, the best college player I've ever seen. With all due respect to Len's teammates, he CARRIED the Maryland program at a time when the rest of the ACC (Duke, UNC, Virginia, NC State, Georgia Tech, etc.) was stacked. Further, had he not died tragically, the Celtics surely would've had another two or three championships. If you never saw Len play in person then it's hard to understand just how much of a talent he was.

Great video and unbelievable research and effort into making this. Then the news we all couldn’t believe, Bias was gone at 22 yrs of age! So heartbreaking for his family and friends and then the hopes of another Celtic dynasty surpassing the Lakers was also DEAD!!! Even tho we got to finals in 87’ the Lakers were the better team and if they had had Bias Celts would of swept, just the most agonizing and awful tragedy in the world of sports!! Bias had so much potential, he would of been right there with the GOAT!! RIP LB
When Jordan was a freshman at NC I was a junior in high school taking an advanced basketball class. The teacher or coach brought in a tv with a vcr showing us video of how to properly shoot a basketball. He wanted us to watch Jordan shoot jump shots. They were just perfect!!!!!
I went to Maryland for two years, the last two coinciding with Lenny's last two. How fortunate we were to see such greatness on campus and with the loaded ACC competition in Cole Field House. It's very difficult for me to talk about him without being overcome with emotion, and I'm a very stoic person 99.7% of the time. I got choked up watching this. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing this.

Lolol Lolol the point he’s trying to make is that no matter what you guys think Bias was not on Jordan’s level and couldn’t go toe to toe with him. Micheal Jordan who played against him multiple times said as much... he basically said he was good but nowhere near as good as him (MJ)
Takes an audio clip from Last Dance about MJ's comparison to Drexler during the 1992 Finals, inserts it to clip about X rival of MJ. Kinda unnecessary (and cheap), was even mentioned in the slide with the comparison to Drexler that MJ took offense, practically hinting that he used the same Last Dance bit even if you hadn't noticed it before. Great video otherwise though. Thank you for the comment 3 & D.
I was at UMD when Bias was there and saw every home game from behind the MD bench. Lenny was a man among boys on the court and sweet and humble off it. Prettiest jumper u ever saw but a beast in the paint. I'm not sure anyone in the NBA at the time had that combination. Only ever saw his jumper get blocked once in college (UVA's Olden Polynice). If you lived in DC during that time you remember exactly what u were doing when u heard he died.
I saw them both play in college. MJ was the more gifted athlete of the two. But in Len's last year at MD he was a more consistent jump shooter than MJ in my opinion. I think he was listed at 6'8" by the time of the draft. They both could jump out of the gym and Len was a beast on the boards. I was really looking forward to seeing him in the league. Such a tragedy for sure.
Len Bias has been elevated to goat status based on his "what if I had quit drug" reputation. Even at highschool Jordan showed what separated an athlete freak like him from other freaks. Mfr didn't have the discipline to stay off drugs but somehow he would have had the discipline to stay focus to live up to such expectations. He the Zion Williamson of his time.

Being from Boston I was raised a Celtics fan. My grandfather worked at the Garden for 37 years in the maintenance dept. I remember watching Bird, Mchale, DJ, Parrish, Ainge, and hearing my dad and family talk about Lenny Bias and how this kid was so incredibly special. I didn’t see much of his college games because they usually aired BC, Umass, UConn and local teams, but I remember all the talk. Then he got drafted and there was cheering in our home! We were gonna win chips for years to come. Such a tragic story. Fast forward years later and I was a 13 year old who got an invite to Celtics basketball camp at Brandeis University and it was the summer that Reggie Lewis collapsed in the playoffs against Charlotte. He was my favorite player. I was die hard. Everyone fought for number 23 and I wanted 35. Reggie came to camp with his baby daughter and watched some games. I turned my ankle and had to go to the trainer and it was the semifinal game so I was really upset. Dee Brown and Ala Abdelnaby carried me to the trainers office. I was told I had to sit out the rest of the game and probably the finals if we won. Heartbroken and crying I looked up and saw Reggie. Holding his baby girl in his giant hand like it was a bassinet. He placed his other hand on my shoulder and said “hey big man, you played your heart out. Be proud of yourself. This is nothing. You have to take care of your body too. Otherwise you won’t be playing long. Rest that ankle and be the motivational leader for your team! Youve got many more games to play young man.” Still one of the greatest moments in my life. We shared some more words after that when he saw my jersey number and he was just a kind gentle humble human being. He came to camp the next three days to watch all the games and give some motivational words to everyone. He took time to take picture sign autographs and talk to everyone. He spoke to me when we crossed paths and my Dad got to meet him which was awesome. Rarely do our idols live up to their reputations. Reggie exceeded it. Just a couple weeks later he got his second opinion from that shit doctor that gave him the okay to play, he was in that very gym practicing and collapsed again and died. I cried like a baby. Those were two special players and I can only speak from my interactions with Reggie, but he was a really special person. It’s a shame the world lost them both.
I am from the northwest but I love the Celtics, Pirates, and Packers. Guess when I grew up. Anyway, I always thought the two hardest athlete deaths for me were Roberto Clemente and Bill Muncey, the Hydro driver. Now thinking about it, I think I would add Lombardi, Bias, and Reggie Lewis. Between those two deaths and Larry Bird's back injury, What a huge triple punch to the Celtics.Hoping they get back. The Garnett year was great but more would sure be great. Maybe someday.
Damn so sad, such a young guy with so much talent. Also, I can’t even imagine what an unstoppable team the Celtics would be adding him to that team, along with a prime Bird.

It would've been refreshing to have had two insanely talented ballers who were also great guys.

The quote when Jordan says “he was a threat but being compared to him I took offense “ was not referring to Len Bias. It was from the Last Dance documentary and he was talking about Clyde Drexler.
I hate that Bias died so very young. What a talent lost. I remember when he passed. It was like the whole world knew it had been robbed.
Thanks for taking the time to share this

Len Bias is still a legend at the University of Maryland. Tons of students still rock his jersey at tailgates and even football games.
The crazy thing the title isn’t even clickbait. Lenny was just as good and had as much potential as Jordan!!
No and no. He was a crackhead.
Dan Chen how can you be sure that he was just as good
@@joshmathew7551 many have said that had he never died, he probably would've gave jordan more work along with the pistons.
Now I don't know about that, but. Larry Bird did stated that had bias entered the league, he would've retired a bit early lol
Nope
“Me being compared to him...I took offense to that” sums up mjs whole career
My dad knew Len Bias in college and still has a picture of Len and his friends holding him up in a celebratory stance. Can you imagine how cool that would be if he stayed alive and went on to achieve NBA goat status like Jordan has now?
Ya MJ prob wouldnt have as many titles so maybe hes not so great after all.
Grew up in Maryland and ball was a big part of my life all the old heads swore by Len Bias being the best talent they have ever seen
As a Maryland student I was at Cole for almost all of Lenny's home games. What an amazing player and person, just a nice guy to everybody. Check out the height Lenny gets at the 11:30 mark. Thank you for making this video, it brings back a lot of great mermories, and one terrible one.
Man, every time I hear a story about Bias, I listen deeply as if I’m going to absorb something new! Hoping there is more to it! Great 👍🏽 work man!
much more to it but they bury everything when it comes to money..
If Len Bias ever played for the Celtics can you only imagine how many rings he and Bird would have had? That team would have dominated.
Leonel Lomas Imagine if he played for the bulls
M Johannesen and Ron Harper
Imagine if peds were never invented. Would there be 82 game seasons and would it be as enjoyable to watch?
@MANCHESTER UNITED F.C The dieheart Western Basketball lovers. That say F soccer will have to die off first. This is the wildcard variable to your equation.
@MAN UTD what does your comment have to do with anything lol soccer is some boring ass shit🤣 except for when yall try to kill each other after the game
That athletic jump from a college freshman to a sophomore is HUUUUGE!!!! I experienced it in baseball, it is truly incredible!
Tim A. Guys don't get to make that jump now in college basketball. They come in expecting to start and then the next season move on to the NBA. Star freshman back then weren't even thinking about starting. They were hoping to get some playing time.
@@beaujac311 Agreed!
Michael Jordan: "Me being compared to him, I took offense to that."
Guy: Makes video about guy who could go "toe to toe" with Michael Jordan.
you know nothing about michael jordan if you dont think he took it personal when anyone was being compared to him
Wasn't that what he said when people were comparing him to drexler?
@@lolollolol2004 yes
If you lived in DC during that time you remember exactly what u were doing when u heard he died.
underrated comment

I was there and was friends with Michael and Lenny’s HS teammate was on my camp team. I watched Michael play against Len twice. The first game Len played him well and the second game Michael took him apart. The second best player at camp that week was Lester Rowe. He was nasty.
Phil Ill I played at a D3 school in Ohio. Michael was unbelievable. He was called Black Magic at camp. Not sure where Black Ice came from. He walked around camp with his baseball glove and we would have card games in his dorm room at night. I wish I had stayed in touch with him. A lot of hoopers at Five Star. Lenny was a quiet dude but Lester Rowe was straight Nasty. He played at UWV. He was just physically more developed than everyone else in HS.
Buckeye Lax not mj tho huh?😂

Incredible video. The power of the narrative is amazing and the ending's 'what if' is so deep. Well done!
I watched this vid right after watching your D1 story and getting to know you a little bit. For whatever subconscious reason, this is where I hit a tipping point and punched the subscribe button. You're telling crucial basketball stories that really do need to be told. I remember when Len Bias was drafted. He was gonna be there for sure, but I had just sorta forgotten... Thanks for the reminder.
He has a D1 story? Could you send me the link of the video? Thanks alot
@@whoshotjj I think this one, but I’m not sure ruclips.net/video/5qdI01cbnIg/видео.html
Michael said he didn’t just want to beat you, he wanted to make you doubt your ability to play the game!
And then came John Rogers. :-)
Sounds like low self-esteem.
Hahaha, Len Bias made MJ doubt himself. Len was his kryptonite.

How in the hell did the Celtics have the #2 pick after winning the championship?
Red Auerbach, the Celtics' president and general manager, had dealt guard Gerald Henderson and cash to the Seattle SuperSonics for the pick in 1984
Jonathan Blaze damn, that would have gone down as one of the greatest deals ever. Kind of like Divac for Kobe.
Sons Of Arkham ... The Lakers had the same deal when they drafted James Worthy after winning the 1982 NBA title with the #1 overall pick.

Outstanding job! Nicely done sir. - I can’t believe this isn’t a movie. Like 'Brian’s Song'. Maybe this why Jordan gets so upset when players get compared to him. It reminds him of his lost friend.

That was an excellent video! I always knew MJ was the GOAT, but LB died 86 when i was just 18. Great to see him and this documentary. What a loss to the NBA, back when it was g00d. THX for the video.
The good thing about watching this is that you are inspired by these athletes, that's why I also played basketball
Damn so sad, such a young guy with so much talent. Also, I can’t even imagine what an unstoppable team the Celtics would be adding him to that team, along with a prime Bird.
