    I’m 6 foot 3 and got asked all my life why I didn’t play basketball since I’m “so tall” - I then would point out how tiny Steve Nash looked on the court and would tell people I’m the same height as him…but I moved like I was shaq.

    • @jaketerpening3284
      @jaketerpening3284 2 года назад +133

      Yeah, I was at the park the other day and I am a pretty good shotblocker for my height. There was a younger kid there who asked me if I had ever been blocked before. For reference, I am 6'2 and had to play center in high school since our school was so short. It's crazy how people struggle to understand how tall basketball players are usually.

    I think the key to "hang time" is making it look like you're not moving in the air. Most players these days are always contorting their body and trying to do something flashy. If you watch some of the longest dunks recorded their knees are tucked in they are holding their arm out with the ball and just waiting to reach the rim, as if they're floating. Nothing fancy, but it looks like they're up there forever.

    • @osas5211
      @osas5211 2 года назад +74

      There's a prolific RUclips dunker named Tyler. He's super athletic with freakish hops but he's 1 of those flashy guys who tries to do all kinds of moves before flushing the ball.
      He's missing the point. I told him to go for distance even if he's just holding the ball cocked without putting it through the legs, behind the back and under his feet.

    • @theoverunderthinker

      I think you really have to measure it against ones peers. if two players shoot the same number of 3's in a year and one is on top of the league in the 80's and the same number puts you mid pack in the 2020's, you have to credit the earlier player because the later players built off of what came before.
      music example: if Eric Clapton came out in 2020 (as a teen same as in the 60's), he would be an unspectacular player, because so much exists not that didn't exist then. people said he was God because they had less experience then.
      Now we have computer models and sports body mechanic professionals and nutrition and coaches that game for 3's. a lot of that did not exist in the Byrd era.
      just one guy's opinion.

    • @anonymike8280
      @anonymike8280 2 года назад +3

      But it didn't alter his actual trajectory by more than a dime, if at all. I think it has been shown that someone in the air can alter their trajectory slightly through body movement. But slightly is the operative word, and if it was by more than the diameter of a dime, I would surprised. In fact, I would surprised if it was that much. Baseball has its myths too. The rising fastball, for example. It has been shown, pitched balls fall at exactly the rate predicted by physics. The curve ball curves because it is moving left to right or right to left. It perhaps loses more velocity than a fastball per each unit of distance between the mound and the plate because it actually is traveling further. If the spin on the pitch affects a pitch's rate of fall, the effect is infinitesimal. Though an infinitesimal distance can be the difference between a home run and a hard ground out.
      Another baseball myth is how far a human being can hit a baseball. In still air, the limit seems to be about 500 feet, maybe 530 at the most. If any home runs have been hit further than that, they have been wind aided. Some have argued that the heavy bat Babe Ruth used enabled him to hit a baseball further than other human beings. I think this is a concept that needs to be tested. Once the ball leaves the bat, it is in ballistic flight. This makes the issue, does a heavier bat produce a higher exit velocity. I imagine, if the bat was going the same speed at the moment of contact, it would because the force of the ball would retard the speed of the bat by less if the bat was heavier. But then there's the question of exactly what the hitter's body was doing at the moment of contact. Like I said, science is needed.

    • @brandoncooke6564
      @brandoncooke6564 2 года назад +3

      But, he couldn't. Why is this such a hard concept for people? You accept the illusion, and then counter it with not accepting it's illusion. He didn't do more with his body and the ball in the air than anybody else. He may have given an ILLUSION of doing more. But he can't "do more". I also think just a general bias comes into play. We are told Jordan is amazing in the air. So we literally see, with the help of our sneaky, lying brain, him doing amazing things in the air that seem inhuman, or better than others... but there is no actual truth to the lie we have been taught to believe, if that makes sense.

If you hold the ball at a constant height as he did it masks the parabala of the jump compared to holding the ball at a stretch, which is what he does in these clips, holding it at waist-shoulder level for most of the jump and then pushing for it right at the last second. So the ball seems to rise, plateau and then rise rather than rise, briefly peak and then descend.

    Back in Detroit around 1969 I was in a friend's backyard with another partner of mine. The three of us were shooting on his rim (there weren't many playground hoops at that time just goals we nailed onto garages or telephone poles with wooden backboards). Soon we noticed three guys coming down the alley. They stopped and asked if they could shoot with us. We said "yeah." We decide to play 3 on 3 and we chose sides.
    Those guys were at least 12 to 14 years older than us because I remember after we were through playing one of them said he was 28 years old. To make it fair we decided that two of the guys would be on one team together and 4 of us - me, my two buddies and the third older guy, on the other.
    One team was shirts and the other skins, I don't remember which. Anyway, the 28 year old (skins) goes up for a jump shot and his friend on our team goes up to block his shot. His hand was practically on the ball to block it. I just knew he was going to snuff that pill right back in his face. Well let me tell you, the jump shooter just kept rising and rising. When the blocker looked like he had gone as high as he could go the shooter rose higher! If you wanna' Talk about Hang Time, that was it! And if he Wasn't hanging in the air he was rising in super slow motion just like in the video.
    Finally he stretched up over his hand and made the shot. He looked to be about 5'9 but by the time he got done stretchin' he was darn near 6 ft tall! Now I'm standing there with my mouth wide open with me and my friend staring at each other in disbelief at what Jxmy says is *_impossible;_* but heck I saw it with my own eyes! Whenever I think about it I have to wonder, is it My Lying Memory fooling me in 2022 or was it My Lying Eyes deceiving me in 1969! Nah. I remember what I remember and saw what I saw and I'm stickin' with it LOL!
    To this day I have never seen anything *_exactly_* like that again; be it in the NBA, college, high school or even on the playground. I also never saw those 3 guys again either. I do remember though that the 28 years old saying something like 'I drink beer and do everything else but I still can play pretty good.' He wasn't lying! Whenever I see a player stretching over a defender every single time I think about that moment in my young life. Some things you just don't forget.

    10:35 the comment fails to address the facts that 1) Jordan didn't play the whole season, 2) was shooting below his normal average, and 3) the team had only played 17 games before the start of the playoffs which probably meant they weren't fully back in sync. So, yes, he did lose in fact, but if Jordan had been there the whole time, it seems likely the dominance would have continued.

    • @Adamdidit

      His comments clearly addressed the short number of games, your shooting percentage is from the REGULAR season and is not accurate for the playoffs actually being discussed, and the team went 13-4 during those 17 games.

      @@Adamdidit I think the counter is that, had Jordan been there for the entire season, the team would have likely been better as a whole, not just better BECAUSE of his stats. He was famously harsh for his demand of excellence even during practice and while his teammates despised him for it at the time they came to realize later in life that he made them better players themselves, not just a better team because he was on it.
      As far as his shooting percentage and PPG, they were also below average even for the playoffs. 31.5 PPG SOUNDS great, but we are talking about Jordan here and he averaged 35-45 PPG in about half of his playoff series and 33.8 career in the playoffs.
      All that being said, I still don't see them beating those Rockets in the finals. That team was STACKED, with a prime Olajuwon on top and Drexler, Thorpe, Maxwell, Horry, Elie, Smith, and Cassell.

    MJ had a 48-inch vertical, could run a 4.3 40-yard dash, and had massive hands with great upper body strength. A basketball god who maximized his skill set to do incredible things. It's why you could do an hour long highlight reel of reverse layups alone.
    AND yes, he was not in b-ball shape. What he did was remarkable, but it takes a season and offseason of conditioning to prepare you for a long playoff run instead of just dropping yourself in the middle of a season. This also proves that MJ's trips to the finals were among the hardest of any great player. Knicks, Magic, Pistons, Celtics, Cavs, Pacers, Heat were all either title contending teams or NBA Champs.

The Bulls regularly tended to have problems with stopping the era's best centers people have over inflated how great those Bulls teams were in the 90s yes they were great but they needed MJ to average 30 plus ppg to win series they needed him to some series to average 40 plus. The team lived or died by Michael and to an extent Scottie playing amazing basketball. Even when they got Dennis they still had fits against teams with amazing centers. Because Dennis is arguably the greatest rebounder but he wasn't locking up shaq for 4 quarters or Hakeem and even David Robinson. Two of which they didn't need to play in the playoffs Dennis Rodman was just a very tenacious defender he was a pest getting into the head of an opponent he excelled at making players make mistakes by bugging them and taking advantage which made him a great defender but there's limits to what that can do. Thank you appreciate you. “Look at the air, look at the hang time, look at the flying motion!!” I don’t quite recall who said this but I do remember hearing this about Michael Jordan. Also, personally saw a man from my hood hang in the air like he could control his weight it amazing how he did that

    I slap my head when I say, at 5-10, I never had a chance at big time pro sports and people say “Oh yeah. Muggy Bougues. Boom. You just didn’t try hard enough.” Stop.

    "Hang time" has never meant "time spent paused in mid-air;" it has always been well-understood to mean simply how long a person jumping stays in the the air - from the moment his toe leaves earth to moment in lands.

      @Chemicalkinetics 2 года назад

      Yes, it does. Some people used to say Jordan can hang it the air. It does not mean he can jump higher. It means people believe he can float somehow.

    A 5’9 man jumping 40+ inches to tomahawk slam a basketball in a 10ft hoop… “this is what the average guy would look like in NBA”😂

    Never really followed the NBA but I loved the heck out of this video. My dad used to rail against the “hang time “ concept as being bogus you just reminded me of him. Thanks

      I didn’t know people actually thought ‘hang time’ was a real thing. Lol!

      @@isaaclaughter Also it really does not explain the fact that people can jump farther or higher, obviously they don't hang in the air longer.. but if you're in the air longer it just simply looks like your hanging. There is obviously no pause button for gravity.

    Would have loved to see clips of Wilt dunking from the free throw line since that's how he did free throws. They put the rule in place, that you can't do that, just for him.

    This is vintage Jimmy. Really helpful to contextualize the long term trends in the NBA vs seasonal affective bias🤣 growing up & being a locked in fan from 1986-2006 makes me appreciate the 21st century disruptions the game has undergone...but I still think Larry Bird in the Steph era would have been able to break some kinda records, right ⁉️

      The man had longevity despite being very beat up. With today's medicine standards and steroids (shhh don't snitch) Larry Bird would be pretty prolific indeed.
