As an American traveling first in Spain in my college days and working and studying in both Europe and the UK, I noticed this too. The French don't have silly rivalry with the British. They are just not that into it. If the English wish to visit for wine and cheese they are perfectly welcome.
Frankly, I still have English customers asking today why they have to pay duties when they receive our goods from Italy. More than one. What am I supposed to think about their understanding? I agree, as a brexiteer. However we joined the Common Market then left the European Union having been overrun by eastern europeans, nowhere near all but too many, who arrived to take advantage of our generosity, weak Courts, and an inability to send the 'criminal' class home. Even now the Court Lists have many eastern European names. I accept that society in general has changed considerably over the years, but feel certain that the change for the worse was throwing open the gates to all without control. If we went back to '73 I would join the Common Market again and probably, with some hindsight regret, alter my view to be a remainer, with the regret that our european parliamentarians failed to protect, not only the UK but, the EU from the rush to absorb the ex-soviet satellites into it's bosom at one time. My brother is visiting us from the UK, and I'm amused by his amazement at the quality of the roads over here (and we're always moaning about the roads!), the ease of getting a GP or dentist appointment on short notice, and the simple fact that there's a working cigarette machine at the end of our road that hasn't been vandalized or broken into. I hadn't really thought about these things before. I suppose the deterioration of the UK is a gradual process when you're living there, and it only becomes glaringly obvious when you come to the EU.
I'm Greek. I studied in Wales and England. Got a HND, Beng and MEng in audio electronics. Gratuated back in 2008. I was paying 11 hundred pounds tuition fees, for every year of the Bachelor's degree and paid 3 and a half thousand for the Masters. Now, I would need something between 7 and 9 thousand, for each year of the Bachelor degree. Nowadays, their big "educational industry" must be non existent or at least it must have taken a big blow.
Germany was number 25th/26 in Europe i(2019) in term of investment in % of GDP for the infrastructures after the Brexit. UK before the Brexit was number 27. The only country in Europe with less in % of GDP than Germany was Bulgaria if I remember well. So yes, catastrophic level in England if he is positively surprised by Germany.

I'd say it's quite the opposite: we took them very seriously. They wanted out, we respected their will and let them out of the EU. We assumed they were mature enough to understand and accept the pros and cons of Brexit. They themselves told us they knew what they were voting for. So we took them at their word: they knew what they were doing, it was all deliberate, rational and planned. I just hope we continue to treat them like mature and responsible people, who wouldn't go back on a commitment and respect the results of the referendum in the future. If they say they want back in, we should tell them: "No, no. There's no need for that. We respect you too much. Like responsible adults, you made your choice and we understand and respect that. We don't doubt for a second that you knew exactly what you were doing. So... full steam ahead, Britain! Good luck with your Brexit!" And we should give them what they ask for, to show our support. "Oh, you want a No Deal Brexit? Absolutely, let's burn the TCA! Always happy to support the will of the British people. You want out of the ECHR/Council of Europe? The UK has three alternatives into the future. 1.Rejoin the EU and regain growth and some of that prosperity we though 'normal' that Tory austerity erroded and was blamed on the EU. 2. As a British Veteran who has lived in Germany for the last 11 years, I do not get to the UK as often as I would like. Last week I visited my Family in Cambridgeshire for the first time in over two years. Wow! Everything is looking so tired and worn out, roads, overgrown verges, weeds everywhere, buildings not maintained. I didn’t use the NHS but I assume it has the issues we all read about. Most surprising was how tired the people looked, it must be so wearing, and the Government and others lie to them daily (check out the UK and its real influence and manufacturing output of renewable energy sources. It is at least 35 years behind Dänemark and Germany, not world leading), so no one really knows what truth looks like anymore. Such a shame. 😢

"We have made ourselves irrelevant". We have high levels of poverty including children without beds. High levels of homelessness eclipsing the US; we are just better at hiding it by spending huge sums to put families in bed and breakfast accommodation. We have just 100 main battle tanks. The latest report says we are unable to fulfil our role in NATO and we are unable to defend ourselves. We have 72,000 troops who could fit into Old Trafford with ease but would leave huge gaps in Wembley. Our Navy just commissioned two aircraft carriers for which we have insufficient F35B Lightening 2, so we have had to ask the US to supply half the rota. Oh and one of them leaks after a few days at sea. The list of problems is too long to contemplate. We are failing. We have to pick ourselves up and show we can be successful, relevant and necessary before the EU would contemplate having us join any of EFTA, EEA, Single Market or EU. It is going to be a tall order, we need to keep the Tories out of it as they have a destructive zeal second to none.
The problems stem from the fact that, here in the UK, we are obsessed with the price of everything and care about the quality of nothing. Nothing is made to last, everything is produced at the lowest price and what manufacturing there is is all owned by foreign companies.

Putin wants a weak UK. One less party he has to worry about in his intention of restoring the Russian Empire. A UK outside of the European Block is irrelevant and, thus, presents no trouble. By removing the UK from the EU, Putin and his lackeys thought that they'd get rid of a potential threat by weakening the european block so that his invasion of Ukraine (first) would be met with passivity by the EU. What he underestimated was Europe's ability to endure brexit. As every specialist and expert alerted before, the UK suffered tremendously with brexit and will keep on suffering for quite a few decades but the EU didn't suffer as much as expected. They were, then, fully capable of enduring the ripple effects of a war of attrition. Putin didn't see that coming. Now, even if the english are stupid enough to vote for a pro-Russia government (Farage with Reform), it's of no consequence, because the UK is now irrelevant in world affairs and it would only serve to alienate the UK from the Western World even further and put them in the same bag as Russia, China, Iran, Afghanistan, etc. Putin's plan - which did had its merits - sort-of backfired. This in spite of his tremendous success in forwarding brexit.
Sad state of affair tbh, as a french living in the northwest I've met a lot of brits and they were all very kind and very funny. The lack of cooperation between the uk and the mainland has always been an issue though. Maybe they should remember that if your only friend is the US, you basically have no friends. It requires a lot of legislation to create that field e.g. environmental regulations, so you don't achieve cost benefits from dumping waste in the river or by skipping safety protection of workers. Food safety regulations must be equal, so I don't risk buying food from another part of europe that contains addidatives that are considered dangerous to my health in my country, or are used to keep out competition. Another reason for the 'Political monster' is as Sir Alex says; Russia and China are out to get us, and the conflict is acted out in areas of trade, technology and even space. We can compete better in unison, but it requires bureaucracy. Other areas that require bureaucracy: 1) Cooperation between law enforcement across europe. 2) Open access to all countries with an EU passport. 3) Approval of a patents covers all of europe. 4) Forcing legislation that ensures a 'One-price' on your mobile phone usage acroos europe, instead of old times when it was 10 times higher the minute you crossed the border. 5) Taxation of tech companies 6) One standard for charger plugs across all brands. The list goes on.

the incredible thing was that as long as the UK stayed in the EU they could claim a special status (which they had) with rules of their own for all manner of things because the will to keep them in was bigger than the bother they were causing (and they were claiming special status ), now that they are gone this is no longer the case. As an American traveling first in Spain in my college days and working and studying in both Europe and the UK, I noticed this too. The French don't have silly rivalry with the British. They are just not that into it. If the English wish to visit for wine and cheese they are perfectly welcome.
Frankly, I still have English customers asking today why they have to pay duties when they receive our goods from Italy. More than one. What am I supposed to think about their understanding? It was clear from before the referendum this would happen. How does someone with a company buying goods from another country not know how the customs work?

However we joined the Common Market then left the European Union having been overrun by eastern europeans, nowhere near all but too many, who arrived to take advantage of our generosity, weak Courts, and an inability to send the 'criminal' class home. Even now the Court Lists have many eastern European names. I accept that society in general has changed considerably over the years, but feel certain that the change for the worse was throwing open the gates to all without control. If we went back to '73 I would join the Common Market again and probably, with some hindsight regret, alter my view to be a remainer, with the regret that our european parliamentarians failed to protect, not only the UK but, the EU from the rush to absorb the ex-soviet satellites into it's bosom at one time. My brother is visiting us from the UK, and I'm amused by his amazement at the quality of the roads over here (and we're always moaning about the roads!), the ease of getting a GP or dentist appointment on short notice, and the simple fact that there's a working cigarette machine at the end of our road that hasn't been vandalized or broken into. I hadn't really thought about these things before. I suppose the deterioration of the UK is a gradual process when you're living there, and it only becomes glaringly obvious when you come to the EU.
I'm Greek. I studied in Wales and England. Got a HND, Beng and MEng in audio electronics. Gratuated back in 2008. I was paying 11 hundred pounds tuition fees, for every year of the Bachelor's degree and paid 3 and a half thousand for the Masters. Now, I would need something between 7 and 9 thousand, for each year of the Bachelor degree. Nowadays, their big "educational industry" must be non existent or at least it must have taken a big blow.
Germany was number 25th/26 in Europe i(2019) in term of investment in % of GDP for the infrastructures after the Brexit. UK before the Brexit was number 27. The only country in Europe with less in % of GDP than Germany was Bulgaria if I remember well.

I'd say it's quite the opposite: we took them very seriously. They wanted out, we respected their will and let them out of the EU. We assumed they were mature enough to understand and accept the pros and cons of Brexit. They themselves told us they knew what they were voting for. So we took them at their word: they knew what they were doing, it was all deliberate, rational and planned. I just hope we continue to treat them like mature and responsible people, who wouldn't go back on a commitment and respect the results of the referendum in the future. If they say they want back in, we should tell them: "No, no. There's no need for that. We respect you too much. Like responsible adults, you made your choice and we understand and respect that. We don't doubt for a second that you knew exactly what you were doing. So... full steam ahead, Britain! Good luck with your Brexit!" And we should give them what they ask for, to show our support. "Oh, you want a No Deal Brexit? Absolutely, let's burn the TCA! Always happy to support the will of the British people. You want out of the ECHR/Council of Europe? Don't worry, we'll close the door after you."

As a British Veteran who has lived in Germany for the last 11 years, I do not get to the UK as often as I would like.
Last week I visited my Family in Cambridgeshire for the first time in over two years. Wow! Everything is looking so tired and worn out, roads, overgrown verges, weeds everywhere, buildings not maintained. I didn’t use the NHS but I assume it has the issues we all read about.
Most surprising was how tired the people looked, it must be so wearing, and the Government and others lie to them daily (check out the UK and its real influence and manufacturing output of renewable energy sources. It is at least 35 years behind Dänemark and Germany, not world leading), so no one really knows what truth looks like anymore. Such a shame. 😢

Sure, FL looks strong on its own and could make it a go as a sole country... but the reality is that FL is what it is because it benefits from the dynamics of being part of a larger whole... the U.S.A. As every specialist and expert alerted before, the UK suffered tremendously with brexit and will keep on suffering for quite a few decades but the EU didn't suffer as much as expected. They were, then, fully capable of enduring the ripple effects of a war of attrition. Putin didn't see that coming. Now, even if the english are stupid enough to vote for a pro-Russia government (Farage with Reform), it's of no consequence, because the UK is now irrelevant in world affairs and it would only serve to alienate the UK from the Western World even further and put them in the same bag as Russia, China, Iran, Afghanistan, etc. Putin's plan - which did had its merits - sort-of backfired. Sad state of affair tbh, as a french living in the northwest I've met a lot of brits and they were all very kind and very funny. The lack of cooperation between the uk and the mainland has always been an issue though. Maybe they should remember that if your only friend is the US, you basically have no friends. (not bashing the states, just the power imbalance is simply too ridiculous)
Hope the younger generations will see some value to returning (maybe fully joining this time) the EU soon.

@@fern8580 Heseltine was receiving £90,000 a year from the CAP (common agricultural policy) vested interest. My parents and their generation were lied to they thought they were joining a free trading area but the EU has morphed into a political monster. If it had remained has a trading block people would have had no problem remaining.

@@brianhewson7779 No one will accept free trade unless the playing field is levelled. It requires a lot of legislation to create that field e.g. environmental regulations, so you don't achieve cost benefits from dumping waste in the river or by skipping safety protection of workers. Food safety regulations must be equal, so I don't risk buying food from another part of europe that contains addidatives that are considered dangerous to my health in my country, or are used to keep out competition.
Another reason for the 'Political monster' is as Sir Alex says; Russia and China are out to get us, and the conflict is acted out in areas of trade, technology and even space. We can compete better in unison, but it requires bureaucracy. Other areas that require bureaucracy: 1) Cooperation between law enforcement across europe. 2) Open access to all countries with an EU passport. 3) Approval of a patents covers all of europe. 4) Forcing legislation that ensures a 'One-price' on your mobile phone usage acroos europe, instead of old times when it was 10 times higher the minute you crossed the border. 5) Taxation of tech companies 6) One standard for charger plugs across all brands. The list goes on.

the incredible thing was that as long as the UK stayed in the EU they could claim a special status (which they had) with rules of their own for all manner of things because the will to keep them in was bigger than the bother they were causing (and they were claiming special status ), now that they are gone this is no longer the case. It is rather incredible that whatever rules they have now in their relation with the EU (rules common to ALL the outsiders) the same people who were claiming to be be victims of " Bruxelles" are now saying that the EU is retorting towards the UK, which is not the case.
