DIY CAR MOUNT - PART 1 - With less than $200!

I've always wanted to capture those epic parallaxes shots, Michael Bay style, and now is the time to do it. The main thing is that, from the moment you want to attach a camera to a car, gear becomes ridiculously expensive. Don't get me wrong, I understand there is a safety factor to incorporate in the price and you need the gear to be 100% reliable.
I want to eventually invest in a "proper" system to mount my cameras to any kind of vehicle, the tilta hydra alien actually looks fairly good and for the first time "affordable" and I'll be ready to pay full price for it, but since I'm not too sure of what I need to get yet, I decided to go full DIY and do it on my balcony, building the strongest vibration isolator I can, the cheapest.
In summary, it's super simple, basically 2 plates with a bunch of holes inter connected with wire ropes :)
Here is the list of what I used to build my very own camera car mount (all of it was bought from Bunnings Australia so if you google those terms, you may even find the actual items):
- 2 x Zenith 75 x 45.2mm 5/16" Stainless Steel U Bolt to mount suction cup handles
- 2 x Double handed Suction cup handle (Trojan)
- 4 x Flat head screw Butterfly bolt to mount ronin 2 quick release (wing nut + screw)
- 2 x Aluminium plates (top and bottom)
- 8x3x2 =48 Zenith 5mm Stainless Steel Wire Rope Grip
- 1 x Pinnacle 5mm x 10m Galvanised Wire Rope
Tools:
A drill with a few drill bits of different diameters and an angle grinder with a disk for cutting metal.

@@GuillaumeCornetfilms 8:33 Do you believe shortening the length of the wires (not by cutting, but by sliding them further towards the center or the plates) you had first added would give the same (or similar) result as adding more wires?
@@MoniJohnson shortening the length of the wires definitely makes the system more rigid. But I guess you still want some flex and allow the plates to move a bit to absorb larger vibrations. There are quite a few parameters to take into account: length of the wires but also, the diameter, their number, their locations, and the weight of the rig to isolate. I did have a look at what manufacturers were doing for this kind of rig and tried to reproduce something similar. Have a look at PART 2 but I believe it works great!
Cool! I've been lusting after a great car mount rig for years. But Matthews is over $1,000 USD. Rig Wheels here in the USA makes a great system, very elegant, but also $1,000. This looks very doable!

The suction cup for mirror will not gonna work for cars, because the surface of the cars is not flat, you not flexyble suction cup

nice DIY project and good conception. IMHO using a 7000$ gimbal like the ronin 2 and after make a DIY isolator (where be inexpensive is one of the most important thing) it's a little bit strange........ i repeat IMHO i wont risk a professional camera on a professional gimbal that could it be compromised by a not professional DIY vibrations wire isolator placed to do the most risky important task . It would be a different a prosumer product like a RS2 .....nice work however :)
I 100% agree with you! As I told a few people in the comments, it didn't make sense spending so much time building this when I could have bought a professional solution directly online. The only reason I did it is that we were in lockdown unable to work for clients during that period. I needed to do something with my hands as it's like meditation for me so I built this :)
Dude I bought the exact same tool for cutting steel cable 😂😂ended up with the magic angle grinder too...my rig still not stable though 😭

What tool did you use to cut the steel cable?
I ended up using the angle grinder, much quicker, marked all the cuts on the cable with a black sharpi and then cut everything in less than a minute without effort :)
They make a hand grip cutter designed specifically for wire rope. I do construction, so I already have one. Cost about $50 USD.
how's length for each wire bro?
Not too sure, I think around 20-25cm with enough margin to shorten or lengthen them when needed
