Filming MythBusters with a Custom Chase Car Camera Rig
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 7 фев 2025
- For the MythBusters series finale, the incredible wedge truck drive through 14 years of props was filmed with a unique piece of custom camera gear. MythBusters' Director of Photography Scott Sorensen built a motion-controlled camera rig onto the back of an old police car, effectively turning it into a camera chase car! We go for a test drive and learn how the rig works with both custom and off-the-shelf technology.
Thanks to MythBusters Director of Photography Scott Sorensen for sharing with us his camera car rig!

#Mythbusters #Behindthescenes
I know its not really Jamie's thing, but please don't lose him from tested now that Mythbusters is over. A lot of tested loves the bigger builds and engineering, Jamie's thing.... We would love to see more in any format that makes him happiest! We love engineering and big builds, Jamie! :)
When someone from MythBusters says they're about to demo something, I'm not sure if they mean demonstrate or demolish.
+Paul Smyers Is there a difference on mythbuster? ;-)
Whoa...a Jamie video. welcome back
+Granite Yeah, it's just him taking 3 minutes out of a day to read something out loud.
+ginemginem Jamie is like the honeybadger, " honeybadger don't give a shit"
Yes, amazing to see Jamie in a "Jamie and Adam's" Tested video.
...even if it was only for literally about 10 seconds.
I think Jamie's name is only associated with it for vanity reasons anyway.
At this point they may as well just rename the show.
Good to see Jamie again on the Channel.
Few comments for such great rig! Left everyone speachless
I'm a simple man.
I see Jamie on Tested, I press like.
+racoiaws I'm the same, but for Adam.
racoiaws I’m the same but with both Adam and Jamie or both
I'm the same but for any tested video
9gag?
Get Scott in for some metal shop 1 day builds!
+Nick Ward +1
So glad to see Jamie on Tested again!
Rip mythbusters. thanks Jamie and Adam for a great, memorable show
This is great! That vibration shock absorber solution is just so elegant!!
Sadly it doesnt seem to work very well as they added a huge amount of warp stabillizer in post production which gives a really weird look.
Glad to see Jamie back in a video!!
It's so rare and fun at the same time to see Jamie for once. I usually don't click like, but did it this time. Hope will be on more.
love the sunset at the end, nice timing, good job guys
I love that this channel can be a behind the scenes of MythBusters.
This is what this channel needs!
That Ursa footage was gorgeous... Amazing camera!
Yeeeeeah Jamie Video!!! A delight, absolute Engineering gem
And here I felt cool when I strapped my FS100 to the hood of my car. This is a kickass rig.
"Precise control" 7:55, and that warping, omg...
Štěpán M. Probably the inexperienced ops fault
He was talking about the air. Don't take it out of context.
And for air, there is precise control, it's a solenoid valve. they tell it go, it goes, they tell it stop, it stops, it's pretty much instant
Edit: Looking at the shot again, he went too fast and stopped midway. Then restarted. That's something to expect with fast moving gear that he has no experience with. And for a demo like this, there's no real point in reshooting it
THAT'S THE CAMERA I WANT. I JUST GOT SO EXCITED.
I saw this rig on the final episode and thought, Wow! How neat is that! Would love to see more on the tools used for the production of mythbusters.
So cool to see Jamie again!
2:50 - that lamp shot by his hand? nice one! :D
love the color grade!
This is incredible. I can’t believe that’s a thing.
Love your work on Mythbusters not going lie when watching the show i love to see how the mith was done or made but i always wanted to see more behind the seans as well
more videos like this please. great stuff.
I'm drooling over that camera
these are really gorgeous shot and engineering, i feel like it as to be more smoth on the rise but that may be cause it was norm first time and he could use some more training :p
really nice and thanks for 14 years of mythbuster !
that camera on the rig is such a nice camera
no lol
Halfcut Zombie for real. Blackmagic URSA Mini 4.6k $4995
Seeing Jamie do a Tested video is like catching a glimpse of the great white walrus.
The video quality from that camera is pretty awesome.
From 9.06 it is so smooth it almost looks animated! Maybe it is the lack of shadows?
will's bike is freakin awesome!!!
Scott is such a cool guy
Love the bullet hole in the right tail light. +1
7:15 went to the bike shop and said "I want really low, flaccid looking handlebars.... but do you have any with such a huge stem that they sit even higher than the stock bars? 'Cause I want everybody to know I have trouble making decisions."
Nice rig, also the color grading is super nice on this one !
Beautiful shots
Great video, plus I'm glad that Jamie is still with Tested
I love how much the crews rig resembles something that would come straight out of Jamie's shop! Instead of something that came out of hollywood! :D
I love the infrequent Jamie approved/intro'd videos!
I get these every morning about 8 😀 I thought this show had finished.
This is a pretty cool setup! The ronin on the vibro plate is a great idea to smooth bums while driving.
Great Video! You guys should take a look at what ty Evans did with the shotover rig on his car. That thing is amazing
Can't believe Adam called this a Caprice in the last episode... but then again they've killed so many Crown Vics on the show he's probably numb to them.
7:56 Notice the hesitation. That may have been a foot foul up but it is the kind of motion that I expect from air power. Love air power for many things but for motion that you need fine control of, not such a fan.
yay Jamie videos. We need more Jamie
"it's basically the world's most advanced back up cam right now" hahah
So lucky.. that’s a very dope car rig
Jamie nice to see you again.
Thanks!
Wow, that is surprisingly great
Impressive rig, thanks for sharing. Also - Jamie!!
Passing on double lines! Your citation will be mailed to you ;) Kidding aside, those guys did great work on that vehicle.
"We're about to Demo it".... aaaaaaand the show is done!
Such a sick rig really impressive. I wonder how smooth that initial movement of the lift is, I would have thought that would have been quite difficult to achieve, but I couldn't see any sudden bite in the footage.
+kingoginge The upwards movement didn't look very smooth to me, viewed 3rd person or through the camera. The first thing I thought when they said it used a pneumatic cylinder instead of hydraulic, was that it would be very hard to get it perfectly smooth, and sure enough, it was not.
8:27 looks like a really high quality game
*yeah i was kind of wondering what would happen with all of the items created by the show too now. it's heartbreaking that it's over but i'm hoping to see more of everyone in the near future unless they are too well off after doing the show to want to do much of anything else*
Gud jawb, Norm!
Hell of a backup camera
Long Live MythBusters!
Nice video upload
Awesome!
Nice rig!
Need more Mythbusters behind the scenes by Tested :D
I miss Mythbusters soo much 😭😭😭
If you have a shop you can build anything... jealous :P Really some nice shots you guys got with that camera rig!
Awesome..Reminds me of a skid loader hydraulic forks setup
When they said "Will" I thought it was Will from Tested riding the bike.... which would have TOTALLY redeemed all the sh*t I've said about Will in the past. But it's not... so the sh*t stands.
wow this awesome!
good job
This guy has balls of steel. I mean...he LET Norm touch it...
Sick!!
We need a chase car !Meh, give me 1 hour.
1 hour later, he come with a police car and the camera rig attached to it :Here you have your chase car
looks like a Guillotine on wheels with a Camera
Cool! great one. Why air cylinder of something like stepper motors or something else? I don't know enough about either to understand why one would be better than the other?
The air cylinder allows fine control of the heavy camera while offering extremely slow or fast movement. A stepper motor while smooth lacks the speed they need.
Awesome video where can I buy that plate that’s attached to the Ronin
My instinct would have been to use a stepping motor to drive the lift. Does the pneumatics give better control over the velocity of the lift?
MORE STUFF LIKE THIS!
Those rolling shots turned out fantastic. Any chance of those being uploaded in 4K for my consumption and drooling? Please?
make a rail that arcs from the tow hitch to the front roof of the car, so you will be able to take shots that's in front of the camera car?
but keeping the camera level will be a pain as it travels over the arc, and having a electric motor drive for the rail probably won't be as smooth as using a air strut
so a camera crew filming a camera crew? thats deep
i luvs yous guys! ty for sharing!
BRING BACK MYTHBUSTERS
I’m so curious as to what happened to that car now. Does it still have the camera rig? Is it sitting in a garage somewhere? Did it get sold off again? I need to know where this car is.
And a P71 is one of the few vehicles out there with a trunk huge enough to hold all that sh*t with room to spare.
As a TV technician, I do have a nerdgasm watching this.
It's pretty cool how they just using it in public filming the motorcycle shot and everyone is all like whoaaaaa
A wild Jamie appears!
I miss Mythbusters man!!!
I love this !! Looks like the vertical movement is a little "jerky", guessing that is the way the pedal handles the air compressor ie. no smooth lead in/lead out? Also, just curious, I assume you have to have a set point of focus before you roll, like 8 feet out or something, since you have no remote focus/iris control, yes? Finally, minus the camera and Ronin, what is your guesstimate on the cost to build such a rig?
nice rig.
JAMIE!
omg LOVE these videos!
Helo tis is THE best video
Thumbs up for Jamie!
No lens motors? How do they control the focus and iris?
What a shame... Myth busters was sooooo good.. I don't see why it had to stop... -_-,
+The Dragons Eye Games You either die as a hero or live long enough to become the villain. Wouldn't want the show to take a terrible turn like the Simpsons, right?
+Ben Fung Fook In my opinion, it was starting to turn that way. The last two seasons were more "showy" in a look-what-we-can-do kind of way
gaskamp2
I guess that with the prestige and popularity of mythbusters they were able to do stuff that they wanted to do but couldn't in the earlier stages of the show
+gaskamp2 I wouldn't even call it "showy" but they became more .... edutainment with all the "specials" based on movies and stuff... as long as that really was something special once or twice a season or for "valid" events like Shark Week it wasn't really detrimental to the series, but come on.... Fruit Ninja now is a "myth"? While the show was still fun to watch, it had lost much of its awe-factor due to such cheap marketing tricks and then the Build team had to go, which was another death blow for the watchability.
I'm sad and i'm sure it won't take more than 3, 4 years until another series will try a similar concept after all they were not the last or only "let's try to do that ourselves" kind of docu.... but it will also NOT be the same without the dynamic between Adam and Jaime, without the build team and hopefully they won't go the same route of "at the end let's blow the shit out of it" Style ;) That would just be plagiarizing MB.
Urs F
Do you know why the let go of the build team?
That first shot hey filmed reminded me of Terminator II
More videos with Jamie please
