- I’ve used various car mounts, including my DIY car mount and suction mounts. But I had not been satisfied until I found the Camtree Gripper G-51.

Some of the things I like about this camera car mount is that it's very cheap, just $135! Despite the low price it doesn't feel cheap. It's made mostly from metal and can hold up even a cinema camera. Also it comes with a padded carry case and lots of different pieces and various length arms. This allows you to configure the rig to fit any car or mounting scenario.

I am glad he kept trying to find the right rig that would do the job.I went for a monfrotto type it's good but I could do with longer arms for it. Great video as always Tom
niall flynn EDSONGUEIRREIRO BAHIA 👍
niall flynn what for straps
Great review but I would like to share my personal experience with this brand this product: it snapped. The bar the holds the suction cup snapped. Cheers
Did it ever hold up?
I just borrowed one of these from a friend, I appreciate this video. One thing I may add - and I'm going to include in the box when I send it back - are some ratchet straps or tie-downs from an auto or home improvement store. Looking at the little safety "line" they include makes me anxious.
Yes I agree... that is a must have addition! Thanks for sharing with everyone.
whats the name of t he film you worked on i would love to see it
And I have the same Manfrotto fluid head. Very kool!!
he forgot to mention that part in the video. Which model do you have?
Tom Antos Been The Man for a while!!!!
Looks great! I am strongly considering picking this up for my next shoot. Thanks for sharing Tom!
On the $85.00 one, using the Ronin S, How fast could you go, ant trust the suction cups from popping off? I am interested in trying that one. And just remember there is allot of money hanging on the outside of your car door. Let me know please.
How does it compare to the magnetic mounts that go on the windshield? I think the company is FilmTools.
Another great video thank you. This piece seems like a great and affordable way to make ones videos stand out.
The price has gone up $50+ dollars since the posting of this video.
I just bought this product on your recommendation and Tom you’re right this mount is great!!!! Thanks Tom I received mine today
What's the actual name of the mount
thanks for sharing this Tom 👍
Great video Tom, is it the newer version to Camtree Gripper G-10 or older? G-10 seems more expensive so it makes me wonder if it is newer or just simply better
Thanks, look like a good mount. Any tips for a good internal mounting system that allows forward and side views ?
Do you have a video on how you set up the interior shots used in your film using the mount?
Did you use your fluid head off your tripod or buy a different fluid head altogether? If you bought a fluid head separately, what brand did you buy?
I had to get it thanks Tom I just ordered mine should be here on Tues
Hi Tom, I’m wondering if there’s anything I should worry about legally if I was to drive around with a camera mounted on my car like this. Seems like it would be a hazard when it obstructs the drivers view. Would I get pulled over? Did you have to get a permit to shoot like you did or just pick a road that nobody drives on?
That would depend on the laws where you plan to do it. Always find out before you shoot.
In calculating which model to get it's important not to forget wind load.
Hi Tom, thank you for this excellent video. On another video "Car Scene: Camera, Lighting & Sound Tutorial" you talked about a similar Camtree product having suction cups that sometimes failed, is this something that Camtree have corrected in this G-51 Gripper, I am asking because I am shooting a car I cannot afford to scratch very soon so I'd like to know what you think before I buy this product. I was also looking at Mathew's Indie rig although that is probably too expensive for me.
Thanks, Tom! Great video. I just ordered one of these and subscribed to your channel! Those car shots in your film were beautiful. How did you get your shot looking straight at all three passengers inside the vehicle? Did you mount the rig on the inside of the windshield with something like a 16mm lens on it and the shortest extension arms in the car rig kit?
I'm also curious to know
Hey bro does this come with the quick release plate? i dont see it on the picture
Im interested and wanting to take a look at this rig for my automotive photography but im worried the suction cups will ruin the paint on the car. Does the mount damage the paint or leave marks?
If you clean both the suction cups and the car it shouldnt
Hi! Do you think it can be attacked to a steamtrain as well?
where would I be able to purchase those safety straps ? cant find them in either of the sites
That thing looks awesome. Would you prefer the Came-TV XP-3 suction mount instead of this one for hood-mount highway speed shots? I really can't decide...both look great.
getting mine this week!!!
Do you think you can do a speed chase in rough terrain with this?
I am so getting this and might buy 2 kits!!
Tom how did you cut all the glare on the windshield with the camera mounted on the hood with the three guys? It looks so great.
Probably was inside or good polarizer
Hey; thx for video. Can you install the rig for indoor space of car; like dashboard(from passenger seat)?
Great tip Tom! thank you.
Quick question, where do you get the safety lines as they do not seem to come with the Camtree Gripper G-51
sir becoz of u i got idea , iam going to try this i love this video thank u very much
In the shot inside of the car with the 3 guys , did u mount the suction on the car dash ? What focal lens did u use ? Which focal lens do u think is the best for this type of shot ?
Great review as always Tom and looks to be a fantastic, affordable unit.
My only concern would be the security ropes resting against the paint of the automobile.
Would be nice if they had a small suction cup for the security rope to go through to keep it off the paint.
Cheers, Pete
Dark Horse Films you can always put a piece of cloth and gaffers tape where the rope meets the car. but I've used this rope and many other rigs where I used big straps and it never damaged the car paint. it's a soft rope.
Ok, good to know.
Thank you for the reply.
3:35 : Was the camera inside or outside ? If it's mounted outside the car how to you get no reflection from the sky and keep the driver/actor drive the car with clear visibility ?
good question, probably a polarizer, i'm probably wrong tho, cuz that's very clean
Likely the lens was mounted as close to the window as possible and masking it so there was cloth from the lens flush with the window, at an angle where it just went outside FOV of the lens. Plus a polarizer likely.
tosvus that would have made the car impossible to drive safely
Depends on how much of the window they would have to cover and how close they can get the lens to the window. Of course in most situations with an actor behind the wheel in a shot like this, they aren't actually *driving* when they are filmed.
When all three actors were in view, we mounted it on the inside instagram.com/p/BJIiUnqhxBI/?taken-by=tiptoemango
Hi Tom! Does it come with the safety cables? (Or do you have any suggestion where to buy good safety cables?)
Does the kit include the tripod head/arm or did you attach your own?
Great review .. thanks !
Can you use it to mount a camera to a walker or a wheel chair?
Amazing ! Thank you for this video !!!
What mm is that lens, to place the camera so close
Thanks for sharing 👍🏻👍🏻
Are those ropes included in the kit?
Stingray Schuller yes everything is included in this kit. ropes hooks latches and even some extra parts that you don't see me use in the video
Which tripod head did you use for this mount please?
Hey man, I know this video is a little older, I am lookin for a good in-car suction cup mount for my dslr. aside from this kit what else would you recommend?
Does it work for filming the world instead of the driver?
Yes
I’m going to be doing some Mobile filmmaking.do u think this mount would keep the footage from a cellphone stable?
hello, do you know if we can mount a gimbal above to avoid vibrations? can my moza air cross be compatible?
why not polarize filter when u put it in the front?
Great video! Your web site is is awesome.
I am a filmmaker in Nigeria. I need the car mount, how can I get it?
What fluidhead is that
Would you trust it with a gimbal
WHere can i find the cable ? lien internet merci
WHAT KIND OF TRI POD HEAD ON THE CAR MOUNT
Where can I find the ropes for this "strange name that I don't remember"
Thanks for your review Tom. What should the lenses shutter speed be at and should I get its image stabalization on or off?
Ibrahim Ziazadeh shutter speed is half your frame rate.
dmr3223 no shutter speed is double your frame rate. If you’re shooting 24fps, adjust to 50shutter (48 of you can)
Did he ever mention the product name
Link to film
Anyone know what brand of safety line he is using?
what was name of the film shot in the video?
How did you do audio for the indoor interview sections? I really like the way it sounds and I am trying to get good audio for my film.
Simple, mics in the car with proper shielding.
What's the name of kit?
Can the mount handle the mini ursa ??
What millimeter lens would you recommend?
HI TOM CAN I ATTACHED THE BLACKMAGIC 2.5K WITH THIS RIG
this material where i get pls refer , how much it cost
What’s the weight capacity? Can it be used for bigger Cinema cameras
I forget the exact weight capacity. Sorry it's been too long. It will not work for full size cinema setups. For that you will need a full door mount or a custom grip setup. This is good for DSLR or mirrorless cameras
Could this support a Ronin M with a 6300 mounted? i would love to buy this as it's way way way cheaper than anything currently offered.
Yes it will
How did you get in the driver’s seat after mounting the system on and around the driver’s door?
You can see the actor get in at 4:06 He got in through the passenger door. Simple :)
OK, thanks.
Hey Tom great video but I have a question that is not related to this topic. I recently purchased the G7 and when I transferred the footage to my computer and tried playing it back it freezes up and it lags. What can I do about this issue?
I have had a similar issue with 4k on the G7. Where you filming in 4k?
Yes
In finder and premiere, my 4k footage never plays smoothly. Only in FCPX will it play normal
did you leave image stabilization on or did you turn it off for the car shots?
It was off
Which movie is that
How do you stabilize the shots ?
how do you protect the lens from bugs, rain, rocks, etc.??????????
The bug part is always a challenge. Perhaps placing an air dam/air deflector just below the lens that would allow the wind to blow up and over the front of the lens...that would prevent bugs from hitting it...and I would always put some sort of filter in front of the lens...a UV, polarizer or some filter that would not only protect the lens but give the desired effect for that given shot.
why didnt you just roll down the windows to avoid reflections? lighting would be much more logical and the driver could look out the window; with proper sound setup noise from outside shouldnt be so bad either...
better with polarize filter
Hello, do you think you can mount a 120d light on this?
For sure! I've mounted cameras on this that had big lens mattebox etc that were heavier than the 120d
@@TomAntos thank you for taking the time to reply. Amazing
Nice video update
is this still available or any new ones because I can't find it thank u
ubal2 did you find it? im looking for smth similar in germany, any help?
Rizwan Ul Haq nope something similar i think i saw it if u google it in the us but not on amazon
Can I put this on my hood of my car?
Ben G yes
Nice
Can you send me a link for this mount?
Brendon Macgregor in the description dude
Im trying the Sigma 85mm and its completely unusable footage with the amount of vibration
That focal length (85mm!) is a giveaway that the footage wouldn't be ideal. These type of shots need to be wide IMO. Anything closer than 24-28mm is going to be pushing it.
thanks for this tom! link not working tho ;(
Sully Cortez Hi Sully. try again the links work now
Thanks!
How did you get the in car front view shot?
mouzetrapp I mounted the camera inside by suction to the windshield and used a 12mm lens on the Panasonic GH4 to get the wide framing
TomAntosFilms ok thanks
Clint D'Souza So did you use this suction kit because I can't see it in the pic
yes it using just 1 suction mount and attached the camera directly to it using a ballhead
Why you don't put information or link about car mount.
Tom great video and because off you I bought one as well. Is it possible for you to email me a copy of the users' manual? I didn't get one and email Cinecity and haven't gotten a response..this thing come with a lot of little pieces and I want to make sure I don't miss anything. Really appreciate the help if possible.
Steven Ricot I think I threw my manual as I don't usually read them. I'll have a look around to see if I still have it but doubt it. it's fairly easy to use. You can mount in different configurations
Tom Antos if you still have manual I would love to see it. The assembly is where I am lost..there are a lot of little pieces as I mentioned.
ciao con gh5 and slr anamorfica?
I mean the footage in the car is shaky though...
Very kool
This does not capture well for vibrations emitted.
Has anyone broke there camera
the bunji clips are a GAMECHANGER in car mounting! never thought of that... I have been using my Fat Gecko 3 suction mount, (with no problems) but this system, I would be fine using with a BORROWED camera 😂 #knowledge 🍻
It's $175 at Amazon not $135. $155 on eBay though.
I s I would have love to seen the footage you shot with it next time!
unfortunately it's useless without gimbal :(
nice
