Another great video! Really like how you incorporate the old photographs and old video footage showing the park when it was open for business. It’s so cool to see the comparison between then and now. You mentioned that Lake Dolores was filled by a spring. I wonder if that spring is still flowing with some water?

    • @OddityOdysseys
      @OddityOdysseys  4 года назад +5

Thanks so much!!! Judging by the looks of it while we were there, my guess is the spring is dry these days. I wish we knew where exactly the spring flowed into the lake. Then we could have gone looking for it.

Lake Dolores started out as a Campground /RV / park which was nice, with a manmade lake with just a tower and swing, rope to drop into the water. Surrounded by shade trees. You could come for the day or stay overnight. It was like a Desert Oasis just out of Barstow. Me and my brother and friends would drive out there from another dry desert town off of HWY 58 called Boron, during the summer. I'm sure it cost a lot of money to keep it filled with water, year-round, but specially during the summer.

    Great stuff. Nice job.
Fun Fact: Lake Dolores (The original name) was the very-first Waterpark in the entire world. For that one reason, alone -- it should be made an official landmark.
Not sure of you've seen the original TV ad, from the old days -- but it's on RUclips, and a good one to watch.
Been there, a ton of times -- and the old park was for Daredevils. The later iterations? Not so much -- which helped lead to its ultimate downfall. So sad that it eventually took this path.
The Byers family should be proud of what they brought to this little corner of the world.
And thanks again, for such an outstanding episode. You made my day.

I went there in late 90's early 2000's. Haven't died from some weird bacteria yet! But it's surreal to watch these clips about Lake Dolores because my dad went there all through the 70's and 80's as he was 18 yrs old in 86. Such cool stories of him going down that very zip line and metal slides in the 70's.

Nicely done. I went there as a kid when it was Lake Delores. No concrete; dirt, wood, and heat. The attractions were very basic and, in retrospect, totally insane (liability wise). It was really just a couple of big holes filled with muddy water you got into by slide, tram, trapeze, or platform.

Then when it became rockahula water park I was like 18 years old we went here like 25 times in one summer. And trust me it was basically a metropolis in the middle of the hot desert. It was packed packed with people. But like I always say all good stories have a sad end. Nothing lasts forever. Thank you guys so very much for posting this The nostalgia is awesome

Most of the buildings and rides were built in around 2000. You can see from the 1979s comercials what was there most of the time.
    Really enjoyed the lazy river.
I still have tickets that I bought in advance....for the next season that never opened...2005? My old company have end of year picnic there.
They would of done better if they had shuttles to the nearby cities for the kids.
The long strait slide was very intense.

I'm from the Los Angeles area, and as a teenager in the 90's, I used to go up to church camp in the high desert. I recall passing the water park on the freeway, but we never stopped (the camp I went to had a seven-story water slide itself!). I wish we had stopped and visited the park.

My friends and I went there a few times in the late 70s. None of that concrete was there. Just a deep man-made lake.
There were several giant long hot metal water slides. You climbed a trail up about 200'. Then you picked a slide and slid off any way you wanted.
Note: Don't touch any dry metal on the way down, or you'll get a red rub burn.
The slide ended by dropping off about 6' above deep lake. You end up flying off slide thru the air and down into the lake.
Also, there was a rope swing platform 30' off water. You grabbed a rope hanging from a 40' A-frame in center of lake, about 30' away from the edge in front of you. You jumped off the edge and swung down and out under the A-frame flying a good 25' in the air on the other side. You could let go and still be going upward, then dropped into the lake. Deep then. Heavy people usually got yanked off the rope when they dropped down, but couldn't hold their weight until it swung outward. Lots of Sun and Fun. I wish we had digital cameras and phones to get picks.

We were last there in the mid 70s when it was Lake Dolores. It was cool and we stayed away from the bikers. We drove out from the burbs of L.A. a few times for day use. I think the E-Ticket at the time was the rope ride into the lake. You'd wait your turn out in the water and then take the rope up the hill. Good times long ago...

A great video. I remember being a kid when the family and I would drive to Vegas. I would see this place and think, why would they build this in the middle of the desert? People going to Vegas want to get to Vegas and people coming back just want to get home. It didn't make sense to me. I guess it didn't make sense to alot of other people. It did look beautiful though. Had a huge Coca Cola can water tower... I do remember that. Great job.

That's a great idea! I would say like a "before and after" comparison, but probably more like an "after and way after" comparison. Hah!

We've been wanting to stop here for several years but still haven't gotten around to it. Someday. Your video makes it look a bit creepy. Awesome, but creepy.
