My mother lived in one of those High Tower apartments with her mother and sister when she was a teenager. She graduated from Hollywood High in the 1930s and their grad ceremony was held at the Hollywood Bowl. I’ve heard the Hollywood High graduations are still held there. Did you know that you can walk into the Hollywood Bowl on summer mornings and sit and listen to the rehearsals for free? Take your coffee and a donut and enjoy the music!

That's amazing that she had that experience, thank you for sharing! We've heard about the Hollywood Bowl rehearsals but never got around to trying it out...perhaps it's a good summer to do it! :)

I have never heard of this elevator and I was just down the street from there yesterday! That's an awesome location to film anything and you two did a great job. I was actually concerned you wouldn't get the chance to ride in it, Lol. Looking forward to your next installment, safe travels!

We used to live up at the top on Broadview Terrace with our band Hot Fog. We came out there after high school from N.J.. We rode this elevator everyday. It wasn't locked up then in the early 70's . Interestingly there was a neighborhood dog that would ride it also. We would walk to the recording studio on Cherokee ave with our guitars and lunch was at the Orange Juluis on Hollywood Blvd a lot of times. Great memories!

Once I was in a crowded elevator and I said out load ' this would be a badge time for someone to turn into a zombie!' everyone became noticeably tense and concerned. That was a bad conversation starter .. lol

I worked for the gas company in Hollywood in the 70s and had a meter change up there one day.I lugged the meter and tools up the stairs and at the top I asked the lady at the house how she liked climbing the stairs and she that they just used the elevator!
I rode it back down and always used it everytime I had an order up there
I took my wife up there once
    Another Hollywood gem!
It was fun working there from 70 to 78

My great-great-grandfather, Frederick S. Gallagher, was the primary investor and developer of the High Tower neighborhood. He raised my great-grandfather and great aunts and uncles in one of the inaugural homes until the Depression struck. Growing up, my father heard stories from his grandfather about the difficult times, including laying off servants and parting with exquisite furniture, jewelry, and Persian rugs, eventually leading to their departure from the property. My great grandfather and his siblings went from being Chauffeured to and from school and living in one of the most beuatiful neighborhoods in LA to living in a small townhouse and having to work after school hours so the family could survive.

WOW! Did this ever bring back memories. When I first moved to LA in 1908 I went out to a bar and ran into an acquaintance who was way-too-drunk to drive BUT ... he insisted on driving his classic car, and I insisted on following him to make sure he got home. His place was at the top of the elevator! What an intro to LA living! I could never find it again and friends thought I was crazy. And BTW that type of elevator was the norm until the 1960s - they used to have a handle in the car that the rider would move to get the elevator to go up, down, and stop; lining it up even with the floor took practice!

This neighborhood reminds me of the Noir era of Hollywood, in particular this avant-garde short film from 1943 called “Meshes of the Afternoon” directed by Maya Deren and her husband, filming took place at their house in West Hollywood over on 1466 North Kings Road and the film is on RUclips if you’re interested in old surrealist cinema it’s a great watch. 👍

Today 4.25.19, I found you guys accidently. This is my 4th video. So I subscribed.
I am in rural N.E. California, but my family is from Wrightwood. Obvious attraction, right?
And my grandparents lived very near the HOLLYWOODLAND sign. So I decided to track your adventures for a while.
There is one amazing thing: you seem to be southern Californians, but you do pretty well respecting property, rules, etc. Good examples are hard to find.
I also like your maps, both in your videos and that you use paper ones.
OK, that's it see you soon.

I always enjoy their interesting videos of often unknown sites. The filming is also always done well along with the editing. Although I wish they would go outside California. I would say they're a cute couple, but it is more her than anything that adds the cuteness factor. But he is really good at telling the back story and other interesting facts.

I'm new to your awesome channel. Have you checked out the the Houdini Mansion in the Hollywood Hills ? I worked with a metal band in the late 80's in Hollywood. After a show at the Whiskey, the band went to the mansion to party. There were old sofas and chairs everywhere. People were crashed out and having sex in every square foot. No violence ever happened. Just alot of drinking and pot smoking. I'm a big Army veteran and looked out of place, but I knew guitar and had alot of fun. Cool channel. I replied before.

The elevator made it on my bucket list of places to visit after I found out Kurt Cobain used to live at 6881 Alta Loma Terrace and he would have use that elevator to get home ( plus the elevator has it's own unique history). He wrote most of In Utero there while living there. He had the Hollywood Bowl right behind his house... I wonder if he could hear concerts from his backyard?
