Shoutout from this old, longhaired, rocker dude that is a native son of Dolly's hometown. We are all pretty tight here in Sevier County. Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Sevierville are sister cities that comprise Sevier County. Yes she was a poor, poor, local mountain girl. She has never forgotten her roots. She has a history of giving back to our community in so many ways with our businesses, schools, hospital, and donations to families through the 2016 fires that destroyed so many businesses, acres and acres of forest, houses, cars, and lives. She has a major theme park (Dollywood) that employs hundreds of us. She is an angel. Everybody loves Dolly Parton. Thanks for choosing to react to this one, bruh. Peace and love to you, yours, and all the Fam on this channel. Later. Catch you on the next.
My dad surprised me one evening when he told me that the quilt that was on his bed he had MADE. He was the baby of his family (#15!), so he spent a lot of time with his mother as she sewed. He said that his mother gave him that quilt because she told him that he'd done more work on it than she had. Daddy was a teenager when he made that quilt, which was sewn completely by hand, and he brought it to his marriage with my mother. They were married for 58 years and Daddy died in my arms from a massive heart attack the day after my mom died. They were part of the Greatest Generation. I miss them every day and I cherish that quilt that my father made. There was love in every stitch. ❤
Your story reminds me of my dad. He made my mother a rocking chair by hand as a gift early in their marriage, because they couldn't afford a store bought one. My mother nursed and rocked 5 children to sleep in that chair over the years. They were also part of that generation, and were solemates their whole lives. Thanks for sharing.
She is an amazing woman. She founded the Imagination Library in honor of her father who could not read. Each month the library ships books to children, from ages birth to 5 years old, free of charge. She has expanded from doing it here in the US to also sending books to kids in the UK, Canada, Australia, and Ireland. By 2022 her program shipped over 2 million books globally.
My grandson gets a book from Dolly every month. He's just a few months old now and doesn't understand the words, but I so look forward to reading them to him when I visit. Every musician and actor should aspire to be like Dolly Parton. She's a perfect example for all of us of how to be a human being. I'm glad that she gets the appreciation and the accolades that she does because she deserves every good thing that comes to her, and we don't celebrate people like her enough.
Dolly is a national treasure. Her actual coat is in Dollywood. You should make a trip there to fully understand how much she gives back. She literally went from rags to riches.
My Mom and dad had 8 kids. My mom made most of our clothes. She heard this song and made my sister and me coats from the scraps. I was sure we'd be made of. All the girls loved them so much. My mom got calls from their mom's asking if she would make ones for them. My mom politely said no. She said they were just for us.I was so proud ❤
TRUE STORY...She was "poor poor", pile of kids in a cabin in the hills. Nobody says a bad word about her in my 50+ years and she built Dollywood amusement park and supports the town she came from with all the tourist stuff of people coming to see her hometown. She's still with the same man all these years, too. And ***JOLENE*** is a true song, too. Most of her stuff is all written by her.
She was dirt-poor. My mom also grew up dirt poor on a farm in Illinois and my grandma sewed every stitch of clothes they all wore. She told me of using flour sacks that were made of cloth, and she'd make dresses for my mom and aunts with those flour sacks back in the 30s and 40s. And they only got one pair of shoes to last the year. Kids made fun of my family, too. This song always makes me want to cry. It's so beautiful. These clothes.... made with love.
I think the most remarkable thing about this story is that Dolly cherished her mother and her efforts that way. So many kids would have been ashamed of the coat because it wasn’t store bought and it was so different. How proud her mom must have been of Dolly and her character!
This song always reminds me of my mom. My mom and dad had 7 children they raised. Looking back we were considered poor but I didn't feel that way growing up. My mom sewed a lot of our clothes. They have both passed now but my siblings and their children are all still very close which was what our parents wanted most in all the world. To stay close and support each other. Which we are and do. Love and family are worth more than all the money in the world.❤❤
We had a girl in our fourth-grade class who was that poor. On food stamps, free lunch, etc. One time she stood up for show and tell, in a pink shirt and pants, and told us proudly that her family had made some money and gotten her this little outfit. She was just beaming. We all somehow knew intuitively to be respectful and happy for her, and my teacher smiled. To the rest of us, getting school clothes at the store was routine, maybe even a boring chore. To her, it was a dazzling moment, one she would treasure forever. I never forgot that, and the lesson never to take things you have for granted.
Oh, she was POOR POOR! 4th of 12 children, the family lived in a two room log cabin with NO electricity and NO running water. This is why she is so humble to this day.
My Momma grew up poor and had to wear her older brother’s coat in high school. She played this song for me when I was a child and it touched me so much! Dolly Parton has such skills at storytelling!!! Love your reaction young man 💕
I was privileged to be sewn for by my mother-- initially out of need, then later after scouring the department stores and not finding what I really wanted, we'd end up at the fabric store and she'd create for me-- only me. I recall coming in from playing outside to stand at her machine asking if it was ready yet! So excited, and yes, proud. We were the best dressed kids in the neighborhood.
We had certain rules that Mama was strict about. Bedtime 8 pm was one and no food or drinks away from the table was another. However, if she didn’t have money to pay for the electricity, we got to stay up past bedtime while she lit candles and told us stories and sang silly songs. When she didn’t have money for groceries, the neighbors would come over and we would have a picnic on the living room floor! When she didn’t have money for the water bill, we would carry buckets of water from the neighbors and took sponge baths and she made it such an adventure! The line from Dolly’s song that says “one is only poor if they choose to be” speaks to me because I never realized we were poor, I never thought of us that way because we never went without and it was never like we had hand outs or hand me downs but the neighbors all pulled together and helped one another out so it was just a normal thing for neighbors to get together and have a little picnic or bbq or something. My mama made everything an adventure and I miss her so much but I am grateful for her memories ❤
Dolly Parton is a country legend who has been recording & writing songs since the 60's. Love her storytelling songs the most like "Jolene" & "Coat Of Many Colors". She has had so many hits such as "Yellow Roses", "My Tennessee Mountain Home", "Here You Come Again", "9 To 5" etc. She did a lot of great duets with Kenny Rogers & Porter Wagoner. She also collaborated with Linda Ronstadt & Emmylou Harris & they released a few "Trio" albums.
Shon, simple and pure but Oh! so monumental that's Dolly, this song also one of my favorite's, Dolly is a great song writer having written hundreds of song's 🎶 🎵 ❤️, she's also a great Actress and philanthropist and still golng strong at 78! "One is only poor if they choose to be". A lot of wisdom in that sentence. I remember when i was 7 i got my first bicycle and we didnt have much money so it was a used ugly green bike but i was proud of it. I used my 2 dollar allowance to buy a can of silver spray paint! I thought i was rich!
I was born in 1970. Dolly Parton was one of the artists I frequently heard playing on my parents' turntable. She is an incredible talent and an incredible human being.
She was dirt poor. You should look up her background. I'm pretty sure there's a book. She is the sweetest, most down to earth lady. Also, she speaks about her childhood in interviews. There are some videos of her performing with some of her siblings and her parents. She has a very big family. They grew up in basically a shack. She and Loretta Lynn have incredible background stories. There's a movie about Loretta "Coalminer's Daughter". Amazing women!😊 God love both of them 🙏😇 RIP Miss Loretta 😢
Great new reaction to this great old song, & almost a hymn🎶, like faithfully sung in Church📖& it's the name of the movie of Dolly's humble Country roots as well...🙏
She was born in a log cabin and at the time this happened, the family was living in what you might call a shack. No running water (they carried buckets of water from a spring). No electricity (they used oil lamps). They burned firewood in the wood stove to heat and also to cook.
“Dolly says the original coat was used for various other purposes but her mother did make a new one to use on display in her Chasing Rainbows Museum at Dollywood. (Wagoner also donated the framed dry cleaning receipt - on which Parton composed the song - to the museum, where it now hangs.)”
There were times when my mother made us clothes, the kids did make fun, but the time and the love that was put into those things was worth more than gold. Some of the quilts that she made for our beds are worth thousands of dollars. There are images of the original coat of many colors. People have copied it for their own kids. The most precious thing of all is a loving mother.
Genesis 37:3 & Luke 15:22 This song is a parallel of a father's love for his son, to a mother's love for her daughter. I didn't think we were poor, I thought the schoolkids were just rude.
They made a TV movie about Dolly’s life called Coat of Many Colors in 2015 starring Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland, it’s really worth the watch if you can find it
The original "coat of many colors" from Dolly Parton's song is likely disintegrated from wear and tear after being passed down to Parton's siblings. She wrote this song about her childhood. No it’s about a coat her Mama made. They were extremely poor. It’s on display at her amusement park Dollywood.
If it wasn't for country music I might not have the appreciation for Rock music that I have. Music is about more than just the hook. Like a song I will leave it up to you to find, "The hook brings you back"!
The coat is in a museum. Dolly grew up extremely poor.
No, no, she was completely poor poor. They didn't have electricity. Makes it even more moving. That's why she gives back to her community so much.
Yes,she just gave to Hurricane Helene residents in the area!
mountain poor poor. very different than urban poor poor.

Back then many people in that part of the country had homes with dirt floors, hence the phrase
"dirt poor".

The coat her mama made is in Dolly's museum. Kids can be cruel.
She was one of 12 children they were poor, poor
There is a movie about the coat
Me And Little Andy will get you,too
What's interesting is in the bible, Joseph is given a coat of many colors by his father Jacob, and it is something taken as fancy and ostentatious.
