They werent life long friends, but started out as roommates. Dorothy and Rose rent from Blanche. Thats Blanches house. When Dorothy got divorced from Stan, she moved in. Rose's husband Charlie passed away and she moved from Minnesota to Florida and moved in. They answered an ad Blanche put in the paper. Sophia initially was living at Shady Pines after suffering a stroke. She eventually moved into Blanches house. Then thay all became good friends. Family reallly
The all time funniest line (imo) I remember Dorothy saying was when they were in the hospital waiting room and Dorothy talks about choking Sophia but she can't because there's life saving equipment around. 😂
The Sophia character was born in Sicily but also raised in NYC. She was a straight up New Yorker with her accent and her sarcasm 😂. She was the funniest old lady on the show. She was played by Estelle Getty who was born and raised in NYC as well. She also starred alongside Sylvester Stallone in the movie comedy Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot in the early 90's. Sadly she passed away from Alzeimer's in 2008, and was also truly the funniest lady in 80's and 90's sitcom.
I always loved Sophia’s story moments that began with the classic opening line… “Picture it, Sicily, 1922…” & then we’d get the inevitable hysterical story as only she could deliver ✊🤣
Amazing how many stars & singers have died from Alzheimers. They say you're less likely to get it if you keep your mind busy & learning new things. Yet singers, song writers and actors probably have VERY busy minds! Writing is creative. Singers memorize lyrics & actors memorize lines & take direction from many different people! Sadly, I don't think a busy mind has anything to do with it. 😢
BJ and Asia...as always, I adore you!! BTW...one of the funniest lines that wasn't shown here is this...Dorothy says, "Women like me don't grow on trees." Sofia: "Too bad. We could use the shade!" Lol😅😅!!
The Golden Girls was my mother’s favourite tv show & at the end of every day, she’d always look forward to watching it each night. It would always leave her in tears from laughing so hard 😂😂😂. Sophia was a BEAST with the one liners 🔥🔥🔥
Estelle Getty was only supposed to be on one episode, but she was such a hit they made her a part of weekly show. I’m black and she reminds me so much of my grandmother & great grandmother when they were alive. You had to have thick skin around them cause they had no filter whatsoever 😂😂😂😂😂😂
My mother had the dvd sets of GG, Sanford and Son, The Jeffersons, Married with Children and watched them over and over before she died in ‘19. Peak comedy.
Just the fact that she was so young in general makes me applaud the makeup crew. I read that she ticked them off and got a face-lift halfway through the series which made them have to work harder and use more makeup to age her lol
This was my mom's all time favorite show. When I was older, we'd sit and watch the repeats. I haven't been able to watch it since I lost my mom. Still, great memories!
This was mine and my mom’s fav show when I was growing up. We watched it in reruns too. I just started rewatching now. My mom passed January 1st of this year
One of the best shows. All the ladies were different from one another but each had their own savage side at times, especially Dorothy. I recomend watching all the episodes whenever you get a chance.
Great show, great writing, great acting! They didn't expect that people would love this sitcom about older ladies. Each character is so well-defined. Sofia was Brooklyn Italian! The series also addressed some very relevant issues, like gay marriage and HIV. Hope you watch more!
“Bed hopping relic” still pops into my mind every now and then and I have definitely used it more than once as an insult lol 😂 Sophia was always one of my faves
The golden girls is one of my all time favorite shows. My mom is 82 , I am 55 and my daughter is 33 , this show is a favorite of us all. My grandma loved the show before she passed as well.
I just had to leave a comment because not only did my mom love to watch the GGs, my daughter and I still do, but our ages are similar which I found funny. My mum would be 97 (15yrs off) were she still with us but I'm 55 and my daughter is 32. 😊
@ it is a show that spans generations of women, all women seem to enjoy it! It was a show that was before its time. It spoke to so many social issues and handled it in a way that no matter what your own opinion was you laughed and cried right along with our wonderful ladies of the lanai.
Mother and daughter and roommates/friends. They met later in life when Blanche posted a roommates wanted ad at the supermarket after her husband died. The show starts with Blanche, Dorothy and Rose already living together in Blanche's house in Miami. Sophia moves in when her nursing home named Shady Pines burns down. They eventually did a how they met episode where you see Blanche posting the flyer in the supermarket and Rose meets her then. Dorothy, who is divorced from Stan also answers the ad.
Everyone loves the golden girls if you’ve had the privilege of watching it. lol. I remember years ago finding a DMX with a huge fan of the show. Did not expect that, but it makes sense.
Blanche owns the house. She advertised in a supermarket for roommates. Rose and Dorothy applied. Sophia was in an old folk's home called Shady Pines, which burned down. So Sophia came to live with them .
Sophia Petrillo Born in Sicily, Italy. Mother to Dorothy Zbornak (nee Petrillo) born in Brooklyn, NY. Rose Nylund born in fictional St.Olaf, MN. Blanche Devereaux born in Atlanta, GA. Estelle Getty (Sophia) July 25, 1923 to July 22, 2008. 84 Bea Arthur (Dorothy) May 13, 1922 to April 25, 2009 86 Rue McClanahan ( Blanche) February 21, 1934 to June 3, 2010 76 Betty White (Rose) January 17, 1922 to December 31, 2021 99
It was Blanche's place, Rose and Dorothy & Sophia answered an ad for roommates and all ended up moving in. I would watch this as re-runs with my grandmother. Golden Girls, People's Court and Price is Right on CBS.
It's pronounced PetriLLo, Italian, because she was born and raised in Sicily - the biggest island in the deepest Italian South, with its own language, culture (a mix of Italian, Greek, Roman, Normannic, Arabic,...) and the best Mediterranean food you can find anywhere. I love the Italian South: Naples, Bari, Palermo, Catania, Syracuse,... Even though Southern Italy is poorer than Northern Italy with its heavy hitters like Milan, Florence and Venice the people in the South are - just like the weather - much warmer and welcoming. As Austrian, living in Vienna now but growing up in the Southern part of the country, Italy is one of our neighbors and my connection to the country and the people started when I was just two years old, spending my first summer there with my parents and grand parents. Since then I've been coming back to visit at least once a year...
The ages of the actresses when the show premiered in 1985 was Bea Arthur (Dorothy Zbornak): 63 years old Betty White (Rose Nylund): 63 years old Rue McClanahan (Blanche Devereaux): 53 years old Estelle Getty (Sophia Petrillo): 62 years old.
You're 100% right, Sophia was from Sicily. Dorothy was U.S. born from either NY or NJ. Blanche was a total old-school southern belle and Rose was from St. Olaf, Minnesota and was born to Norwegian parents. Rose's stories are gold. I'd suggest you watch one of the videos on them next if you get a chance. You'll love them. Another unrelated video you may like is The Carol Burnett Show. The Dentist and The Elephant Story (uncut version) are two of the funniest skits along with the Nazi Interrogation skit.
Classic show, classic characters. It wasn't vulgar or nothing, simply great comedy. Though representation for black ppl was REALLY low compared to today, it was still good stuff. I miss The Golden Girls , Betty White was the last one to go. RIP LADIES . Thanks for being our friend 😂👏🏾❤️
I watched so many episodes with my grandma, I miss those great times. The show was great way back when and still holds up today! A gem of television sitcoms.
First I have to say that I was watchange. Asia asia first on music re. Actions. Hello, from Canada. And now I've been watching both of you for the longest time. I think you guys are so awesome together. God bless and keep this going strong.🇨🇦👋🕊🙏🙏🙏🕊
Oh My God!!! Not OMG bullsh*t!!! You 2 are of the most beautiful couples ever, and your reactions.... WOW.... luv y'all.... hello from Switzerland from a Texas guy, 10 yrs Navy, 4 yrs Army
Golden Girls always thinks of my mom. I was five when it came out and when I got a little older, I would watch it with my mother. It was one of the few shows she and I could bond over. This and Law & Order: SVU. We would watch reruns together too. Lost her 3 years ago.
This has been and always will be my all-time favorite show....it will never get old and never stop making me laugh! It was also good at touching sensitive topics back then as well like sexuality and AIDS so if you haven't seen the AIDS episodes yet, you definitely need to! A lot of the stuff that was said back then, you wouldn't be able to say on TV today. Estelle Getty was the youngest of the original cast and it actually took over 2 hrs (I think 3) to get her ready for each episode.
One of the best shows of 1985! Blanch owned the house. Dorthy and Rose became her tenants/Room mates. Sophia's nursing home burned down. So she ended up living with them.
Oh my goodness. Thank you so much. I was born in the 60s. And we were kind of poor white dress. So I don't know, in Canada. We ran home for about 7 years. I laughed so hard because it was fun bags. And I mean, I would have been in my late teens by the time that shows started. And you didn't give a c*** about if they were young white black Asian. You'd just like the writing and I grew up watching Sanford and son and lots of funny shows that nobody bitched about all the time. I don't get it. It just sucks nowadays, but thank you so much. Absolutely loved this.❤❤❤❤
Sophia was Sicilian and lived and raised her family in Brooklyn before moving to Miami with daughter Dorothy after her husband died. Rose was from Minnesota, Blanche a southern belle from Georgia.

Other than savage comebacks Sophia would begin a flashback story with “Picture it, Sicily 1922…” with the years changing slightly depending on the story
Not lifelong friends. Dorothy responded to an ad for a roommate that Blanche had posted. After Dorothy moved in, Sophia left her retirement home and came to live with them. Then Rose moved in

@@rocknroller77 Oooh yeah, I totally forgot about the ad. Thanks
Y'all got to watch the best of Rose and Dorothy as well.
This is one of the greatest sitcoms ever made. Funny as all hell.
Can hardly wait to see your reaction to Dorothy. My favorite
The all time funniest line (imo) I remember Dorothy saying was when they were in the hospital waiting room and Dorothy talks about choking Sophia but she can't because there's life saving equipment around. 😂

I loved Sophia. She was my favorite. Estelle Getty also played the grandmother in the 1985 movie Mask along with Cher.
Wasn't Estelle also the youngest out of all of them too or just Bea?

Actually, it was Rue McClanahan that was the youngest. She played Blanche.
Just the fact that she was so young in general makes me applaud the makeup crew. I read that she ticked them off and got a face-lift halfway through the series which made them have to work harder and use more makeup to age her lol
I think they were all in their 40s.
@@BrandonRobinson8321 I wonder where that came from, because I had heard the same thing. You are correct though.

One of the best shows. All the ladies were different from one another but each had their own savage side at times, especially Dorothy. I recomend watching all the episodes whenever you get a chance.
One of the best roasting lines ever came from her lol. This aired from 1985-1992, seven seasons.

I had to laugh in the original cast they were planning on Betty White playing the part of Blanche
More Golden Girls please.
Everybody needs a SOPHIA PETRILLO in their lives to keep them on track!!!
Omg id love it
I love this show all these ladies are genuinely the best ever thanks for reacting to this
Thoroughly enjoyed that - haven't laughed so much in ages. Haven't seen GG in years & had forgotten how funny it was!!.
in the 80's and 90's there were no limits, they wrote and said whatever they wanted to say, and no one was offended, not like today
We need to get back to that...
There were limits. People just knew how to be funny within those limits.
some things are inappropriate though. not this show.
I still watch them. Sophia is my favorite. She is just so funny.

My all time favorite show!!!
Sofia was Dorothy's mom by blood. Sofia,Dorothy,Rose and Blanche were family by choice. Golden Girls like a lot of shows tackled serious issues.

Sophia burned it down
Yes. Rose and Blanche weren't life long friends
Shows like this are why us 80's kids are so acerbic in our wit.
Sophia is the older female Al Bundy.
