- Affirmed won 21 major stakes on both the East and West coasts during his career. He was voted a champion at two, three, and four, and was named Horse of the Year in 1978 and 1979. He also broke the record for annual earnings and became the first $2 million money earner in the history of Thoroughbred racing. He is most famously known for winning the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing in 1978, holding the title of reining champion until 2015. At stud, Affirmed sired 12 champions before his death in 2001 at the age of 25.
I love Secretariat, but Affirmed is my favorite horse of all-time. I always thought he possessed special qualities that so few horses possessed. No list of great horses is complete without bearing his name.
Love the 3...1970's Triple Crown winners, from "The Golden Era of Horse Racing"
I love this horse and I am very proud and honored to have his grandson Affirmative Shadow on our farm. Shad is a ringer for his grand sire and doing well at 26 years old. Thank you Affirmed for my boy.
The man in front of affirmed when walking to track at Belmont stakes in brown with black hair is my father!!! He is one responsible for him winning and he beat alydar after getting off bad colic with ulcers!!! The owners treated my dad like shit and when affirmed got bigger in muscle laz first words after first heart attack laz said” Pablo what happen horse to fat”.smh!!! My dad deserves credit plus the triple crown trophy!!! My dad did 90 percent traveling and paperwork and a lot other things for laz!!!! Only reason my dad went long and never said anything cause it free traveling and laz and owners were ones who payed for papers to come to USA!!! This is all truth I love u and proud of u father!!
My all time favorite horse. In fact he is on my list of all time favorite athletes.
I fully agree Affirmed was a great Champion. I vividly remember the Triple Crown races of 1978. His three wins were awesome. Unfortunately at the time I myself was pulling, and cheering for Alydar, at that phase of my life I was always pulling for the underdog, competitor, or rival? Thanks great documentary.🐎🐴🐎🐴🐎🐴🐎🐴 PS i just love horse racing.
Welcome to the Triple Crown Club, American Pharaoh!
I love Secretariat and I also love Seattle Slew spectacular bid. But out of all of them affirmed was my guy. He had guts and he wasn't the biggest strongest. Even the fastest. But something about him I just love him

According to "The Bloodhorse Top 100 United States Racehorses of the 20th. Century, Affirmed is ranked 12th with a 22 victories, 5 seconds and third record in 29 starts, and US$ 2.393.818,00 earned. A day like today, Saturday June 10th. 1978, Affirmed became eleventh United States Triple Crown winner. Forty years have passed since then! An unforgettable horse!
Affirmedwon the first meeting against Alydar in the Great AMerican. Alydar was the favorite, ironically as that race was Alydar's debut or second race ever, and Affirmed won and Alydar wound up 5th. I should Know. Alydar is my all time favorite racehorse of all time. Affirmed is my all time favorite Triple Crown winner. I respect him the most because he the hardest thing in sports, a 3 YO thoroughbred winning the Triple Crown under the greatest pressure and being challenged by and defeating a tenacious , courageous and valiant foe. Affirmed was the better horse. No excuses here. . They are both so sorely missed.
Nice video, but getting the Affirmed/Alydar first meeting wrong is a pretty big snafu. Their first meeting was the Youthful Stakes and was won by Affirmed.
Affirmed's owner has nothing to worry about with Affirmed's legacy. It has been going on and on. 36 years and counting......
bubblinbrownsugar616 Hopefully, not soon to be 37 years...
bubblinbrownsugar616 American Pharaoh will do it.
We'll see. Just watched AP skip his way (not run, skipped. Wayyy to easy for him) to winning the Preakness in the nasty, pouring, pellet size hail rain which I found quite impressive. The weather didn't bother him one bit. However after watching 11,12 horses win the Derby and Preakness only come up short in the Belmont has taught me anything, its to not count the chickens before they hatch. Not being pessimistic or anything. Just being real.
Cruz Medina AND HE DID!! I specifically came back to this video just to say it.
I almost passed out watching it! LOLOL! Now I just hope we don't have to wait long for the next one!! :)
bubblinbrownsugar616 Yes!!! I was so ecstatic!
THE DROUGHT IS OVER!!! American Pharaoh has done it!
It just shows how good Affirmed was when he went head to head with the great Alydar...
Good afternoon. A day like today, Saturday June 10th. 1978 Affirmed, ridden by Steve Cauthen and trained by Lazaro Barrera, became eleventh United States Triple Crown winner. Forty yeras have passed! (I was fifteen then) According to "The Bloodhorse Top United States Top 100 Racehorses of 20th. Century List" Affurmed is ranked in 12th. Position. He won 22 races, 5 times was second and 1 third in 29 starts and earned US$ 2.393.818,00. An extraordinary and unforgettable horse. Regards from a venezuelan citizen who last February emigrated to Chile searching a better way of life.
Funny to think, most other years, maybe they would BOTH be Triple Crown winners. Still the greatest rivalry in horse racing in my opinion.
It's remarkable there were three Triple Crown winners in the 1970s, and not another for 37 years.
Great , great racehorse - there are so many
steve told me affirmed was the best he rode, after he rode so many amazing horses in england
Interesting details in this story. But Affirmed, not Alydar, won the first meeting between the two. Alydar won their second meeting.
He was an amazing horse, i didn't know he died at the age of 26
I'm shocked! The horse I ride currently is the grandson of Affirmed.
Who’s the guy sell affirmed triple crown trophy to pawn star
Cavalo afirmado aos 2 anos ; afirmado aos 3 anos ; afirmado aos 4 anos , e poderia ser afirmado aos 5 anos ....
Why someone try to sell the triple crown thropy of affirmed in pawn star that was history!
I'll offer you $5, but I'm taking a huge risk here.
Last to win? NOT ANYMORE!
Secretariat is nobody compared to Affirmed. He was a champion year after year until his retirement.
I can’t understand your statement. Are you saying Affirm better than Secretariat?
I mean that is a retarded statement. You know nothing about racing
@@mikewarren1401 Yes i am
Well you are just trying to be different. I am sure you are tired of hearing about big red. Hell affirm got his ass handed to him twice by Seattle slew much less Secretariat. 😂😂😂
@@mikewarren1401 Well,Seattle Slew was a great horse himself.
