That line has always gotten to me because Slughorn has an overall positive reputation, he's not associated with the Death Eaters nor does he seem to approve of them... and yet, he still has that small, casual little prejudice against muggleborns in his speech. I think it says a lot about how insidious and far reaching hatred like that is. Even the centrists like Slughorn, neutral but "good" leaning, have it in their minds probably as a consequence of societal attitudes they were raised in.
@@ch5635 I always thought it was a comment on children having a head start: purebloods and half bloods have some previous experience with magic because they've grown up around it from their parents, so they'll already know some things and already be adjusted to the magical world. Muggleborns don't have that advantage, they're the ones who are thrown in the deep end, so it's harder for them. So the fact that Lily was the best Slughorn taught despite not having the headstart is all the more impressive for him.
