    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Taylor (Charlton Heston) tries to speak in front of Zira (Kim Hunter) and Dr. Zaius (Maurice Evans).
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Originally intended as a project for Blake Edwards, the film version of Pierre Boule's semisatiric sci-fi novel came to the screen in 1968 under the directorial guidance of Franklin J. Schaffner. Charlton Heston is George Taylor, one of several astronauts on a long, long space mission whose spaceship crash-lands on a remote planet, seemingly devoid of intelligent life. Soon the astronaut learns that this planet is ruled by a race of talking, thinking, reasoning apes who hold court over a complex, multilayered civilization. In this topsy-turvy society, the human beings are grunting, inarticulate primates, penned-up like animals. When ape leader Dr. Zaius (Maurice Evans) discovers that the captive Taylor has the power of speech, he reacts in horror and insists that the astronaut be killed. But sympathetic ape scientists Cornelius (Roddy McDowell) and Dr. Zira (Kim Hunter) risk their lives to protect Taylor -- and to discover the secret of their planet's history that Dr. Zaius and his minions guard so jealously. In the end, it is Taylor who stumbles on the truth about the Planet of the Apes: "Damn you! Damn you! Goddamn you all to hell!" Scripted by Rod Serling and Michael Wilson (a former blacklistee who previously adapted another Pierre Boule novel, Bridge on the River Kwai), Planet of the Apes has gone on to be an all-time sci-fi (and/or camp) classic. It won a special Academy Award for John Chambers's convincing (and, from all accounts, excruciatingly uncomfortable) simian makeup. It spawned four successful sequels, as well as two TV series, one live-action and one animated.

When I was a kid I loved this movie so much I recorded it on audio cassette, which was the only way a regular person could record something on TV at that time. I would just lay there on the floor next to the boombox, listening to the sounds, music and dialogue of Planet of the Apes, the recording filling up my young mind with all the scenes of the film.

Most of the actors, Roddy McDowall in particular, would actually say the face prosthetics were so stiff and didn't lend any acting ability. But Kim Hunter, as Dr Zira, had a talent for putting so much emotion through. Really made her stand out in the movies.

This may be related to the fact that I read the book before seeing the movie but I generally saw Taylor in quite a negative light; through the movie he always act in aggressive and arrogant way (and a bit of a hypocrite too, I mean in the first scene he admits men's faults but when he faces apes civilization he is quick to insist on the fact the man is superior to apes nevertheless).
With him acting that way I can't blame Zaius for keeping firm in his opinion about mankind.
Ulysse Mérou, the protagonist of the novel, tried his best to prove the fact that he was an intelligent being and he even tried his best to act civil towards the apes, despite the circumstances; sure he had some angry moments but only under stress for not being understood and with the only exception of when Nova was removed from his cage

I saw the reboot series before watching the original (despite hearing about THIS movie my whole life), and finally watching this recently, I cannot help but notice countless similarities between the original film and the three films of the reboot series. Not only does the name "Bright Eyes," given to Taylor, is the same name as Caesar's mother in "Rise," but this human zoo does remind me strongly of the primate shelter in "Rise," complete with the sadistic guard. Not to mention how the apes were crucified in dawn in "War" in their 'X' shapes looks almost the same as the 'scare-human' structures seen earlier in this film.
Obviously, the writers and directors behind the reboot series truly loved this classic.

A lot of older movies have a theatrical Play like feel to me. It’s something about the way they are shot, and how long the camera will stay on one shot, the honesty of the sets and costumes , the delivery and space and time given to each line, no background music. It all gives it a feeling like it was a stage play first at times. It’s so rarely seen now
