CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Taylor (Charlton Heston) attempts to communicate by writing in the sand, but his efforts are quickly thwarted.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Originally intended as a project for Blake Edwards, the film version of Pierre Boule's semisatiric sci-fi novel came to the screen in 1968 under the directorial guidance of Franklin J. Schaffner. Charlton Heston is George Taylor, one of several astronauts on a long, long space mission whose spaceship crash-lands on a remote planet, seemingly devoid of intelligent life. Soon the astronaut learns that this planet is ruled by a race of talking, thinking, reasoning apes who hold court over a complex, multilayered civilization. In this topsy-turvy society, the human beings are grunting, inarticulate primates, penned-up like animals. When ape leader Dr. Zaius (Maurice Evans) discovers that the captive Taylor has the power of speech, he reacts in horror and insists that the astronaut be killed. But sympathetic ape scientists Cornelius (Roddy McDowell) and Dr. Zira (Kim Hunter) risk their lives to protect Taylor -- and to discover the secret of their planet's history that Dr. Zaius and his minions guard so jealously. In the end, it is Taylor who stumbles on the truth about the Planet of the Apes: "Damn you! Damn you! Goddamn you all to hell!" Scripted by Rod Serling and Michael Wilson (a former blacklistee who previously adapted another Pierre Boule novel, Bridge on the River Kwai), Planet of the Apes has gone on to be an all-time sci-fi (and/or camp) classic. It won a special Academy Award for John Chambers's convincing (and, from all accounts, excruciatingly uncomfortable) simian makeup. It spawned four successful sequels, as well as two TV series, one live-action and one animated.

Uh, help me Dr. Zaius
WHATS WRONG WITH ME!?!?
You can see how great Dr. Zaius is at playing the other apes here. Notice how quickly he changes his attitude with Cornelius proposed expedition to distract him from what was happening.
Adopting human traits.
DR Zaius was just Monkeying with them.
Dr Zaius is a subtle yet very sinister character. This always looming presence who clearly knows too much, and is very capable of throwing his weight around while disguising that he's doing that.
He knew a lot more than you thought.
Dr. Zaius knew everything.
It will never happen, but we need a backstory movie centered around Dr. Zaius. For me, he is the most interesting character in the film.
Theres a comic series which are named Betrayal, Exile, and Cataclysm which give more insight into Zaius's story.
"I love you Dr. Zaius!"
Then write it
Who knows. Maybe we’ll get one in the reboot franchise

Dr. Zaius is one of those villains that you hate but you understand why he despises humans and it totally makes sense why he covered up the fact that humans have the ability to speak and think. Dr. Zaius doesn't want the rest of the apes to find out because then maybe those would consider humans to be intelligent and would allow humans to be free and Zaius is afraid of the fact that if humans are released from captivity than they will become the dominant species on the planet again and will repeat their actions of causing destruction and chaos and ruin the ape culture.
Doesn't sound like a villain to me

Nova was trying to protect him . You'll notice on the movie were she gets to cover his mouth when tryed speaking to hear.
She also tries to wipe up Taylor's handwriting. She knows he's playing with fire.
Maurice Evans brought a powerhouse performance! His quiet power dominated even when covered by make-up! This could've been a laughable farce but for the dynamic acting. Yes, Roddy rocked it too...
True that. I've always admired Maurice. They did things you wouldn't expect a Shakespearean actor to do, like portray an anthropomorphic orangutan.

The legendary actor Edward G. Robinson was the original choice to play dr. Zaius, but unfortunately he had to turned down the part. Fortunately, Maurice Evans was very good in this role. Dr. Zaius is a great antagonist and very interesting character in this movie.
He's the antagonist from the viewers eyes because we're seeing it from Taylor's point of view. Taylor is actually the bad guy because he's a man who destroyed earth.
Remember how they argued on "Buffy" about caveman versus astronaut? That's basically what happens here. Since Taylor kicks their asses, that pretty much answers it.
2:01 I think I see a future leader!
Jay Flippen æ
Taylor was putting in a hidden plug for the Planet of the Apes TV series. Zaius didn't appreciate that.
Still such a great movie
I love you Dr. Zaius!
Back in the good 'ol days when there was no CGI no fakeness, everything looked so, REAL!
Granted, the make-up is good, but it can't really be compared to the realism of the new Planet of the Apes franchise. The depiction of the movement of the apes is arguably the most significant aspect of what makes CGI and the modern film franchise so much more realistic. Bearing in the mind the time that it was made, the originals really do have to be appreciated, however.
Exactly. The Apes in the newer films are PS4 cartoons. The heavy pounds of make up is way more impressive.
I get what you’re saying but the mouth movements were not convincing when the apes spoke. It looked extremely fake in that regard. That’s about the only advantage CGI would have for this concept, allowing the face to be more mobile like an actual ape’s is.
I prefer the look of the old ones. Not keen on the new ones
Ok boomer
Ah the good ol jab and back chop combo
Charlton Heston the best actor ever live on earth.
He like Harrison Ford in a way ..Heston and Harrison fit for films lije this
this reminds me alot of star trek fighting sequences but better choreographed
kaaaaaaahn!!!
Maurice Evans is good as Zaius--he was also in Rosemary's Baby as Hutch, a completely different role from Zaius, in the same year (1968)...
and good as Samantha Stevens father in Bewitched
That cage has some nice welds. Wonder where their welder is
@Ralph Goober Bars strong together!
I just noticed the shoes have thumb ridges, nice detail!
Its even better in the sequel when Zaius and Ursu the Gorilla are in a sauna together and you see their whole ape bodies lol
What I still don’t get is how Zera figured that Nova ( the girl ) remembered the blood transfusion
She was pointing at her arm where they stuck the needle. Are you that blind ?
Observation & analysis between these two doctor's-one played by actor Roddy McDowell incredible. Lisa
Dr. Zaius is my favourite bad-guy character.
But Zaius isn't really a villain. Because of his position, he knows certain truths about Ape society and its origins, truths that most apes are blissfully unaware of. By the time we meet him, he has already seen Landon and knows that Landon could speak and was intelligent (which is why he has him lobotomized; though he didn't have him simply killed, something he could easily have ordered.) He stops Cornelius' work because he know what Cornelius will find, that humans once were rulers of the planet and had a civilization far more advanced than apes have been able to achieve. So when Taylor turns up, it is Zaius's worst nightmare, that there may be a remnant of human civilization somewhere on the planet. (He doesn't believe that Taylor could have come from anywhere else.) His interrogation of Taylor is centered on learning where this remnant is located. He is fascinated by, yet terrified of Taylor and what the existence of Taylor (and Landon) might mean for the future Ape civilization. He is simply protecting Ape society and its future.
@@jamesrogers47, "Zaius isn't really a villain". You probably don't think 'Nurse Ratched' was a villain either....
@@jasona9 No she was just the hot bitchy type, McMurphy should have played his cards right
@@jamesrogers47 I would love to see the original outline of the film, particularly to see if Zaius had prior contact with Landon. It does make sense that Zaius originally discovered Landon talking and failing to get information from him, had his identity surgically removed, the same deal he would later make to Taylor. It would also explain his uneasiness and prying around Zira's lab area.
He wants their intelligence taken away from so they don't find away to revolt and make a mess of the planet like they did when Taylor was in space.
at 2:03 Dr zaius must’ve already had contact with landon and had him into surgery, he has that look like he seen something before that

I Love Ya Dr. Zaius!
Wow I loved this as a kid but looking at it now after the new ones I must say we’ve come a long way with makeup and special effects!
And we went backwards when it comes to storytelling, world building, and character development. Lol
Well the golden age of makeup and special effects was between the advent of Star Wars and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. So basically from 1977-2003 or so.
CGI is great and was peak in 2007-08 we had iron man transformers and pirates even comparing newer movies of those same franchises are weaker looking to their older entries. But people heavily rely on cgi to do anything and everything so it gets rushed. a mixture of practical and cgi is perfect but companies just want to do poor cgi to get movies made faster
The new ones are awful.

People just don't understand what made these older movies so good. The reliance was on good acting rather than special effects. Even if the actors in a modern movie are very good, there is still emphasis on loud music and CGI rather than just letting the actors create the scene.

Wtffffff what it this
Why do they start scribbling all over his writing
Dr. Zaious KNEW that the main character Taylor was intelligent but loathed the idea of having such a person exist in his world. He believes that man is a disease and caused their own destruction. He is partially right, given that this is earth but heavily destroyed. Either from their own devices or by withering away slowly. He also had religious reasons for hating humanity and was inspired by it as well.
All of these factors are why he constantly dismissed the idea of Taylor being intelligent. He did this by making efforts to remove any evidence of his intelligence, practically lobotomizing Taylor's friend Landon, and ordering to castrate Taylor so that his intelligence gene couldn't spread. The sad fact is that in the end, Dr. Zaious become the very thing he hated. By doing everything he could to prevent his own species from facing the same fate as the humans he'd only inveterately lead them to their own demise. The only way to prevent a tragedy is to learn its history of it. By ignoring the past, you are only doomed to repeat it. Even if its a completely different species.

Smart individuals learning from their mistakes, even smarter individuals learning from the mistakes of others
Dr Zaious should have allowed them to learn everything possible about the past human civilization so as too hopefully not have the intelligent ape population not suffer a similar down fall. Imagine if Taylor were to go on to help re-establish a human civilization imagine what they and the ape civilization could accomplish. That is though as long as they don't start up a world war possibly destroying both species. Maybe have the apes occupy S. America, Africa, Australia, New Zealand parts of India Indonesia etc while we humans occupy Europe most of Asia and most of North America.
The original movie was ‘Planet of the Pigs’ with Pigs as the dominant species. But the actors kept cracking up in pig costumes having to run about foraging on all fours. So Apes it became. Plus Charlton Heston walked off set shouting “This is pork insanity!”.
