twicelights 2019 i was in the floor section surrounded by mostly other adult males and we had an impromptu meeting on how to pronounce names and we all confessed we'd never said the members names outloud until this moment and had a good laugh. some younger female fans nearby were kind enough to help us out. i was dating a mainland chinese girl at the time who'd taught me how to say hello and order some food in mandarin so i thought i knew how to say tzuyu's name; "tzoo-yoo" obviously duhhhh /s and i thought people were playing around with me when they said its "chewy"
I appreciate that even though her name is so hard to pronounce that even Dahyun can barely do it right, they didn't give her some generic stage name to appease certain people. I wish stuff like that happened more often. I'm willing to learn how to pronounce someone's name cause it's HER FREAKING NAME
Hi! I’m a Chines tutor!! Her name is spelled Zhou Ziyu in pinyin (knowing this might help with the pronunciation). The “zh” sound in mandarin is pronounced like “j” and “ou” is similar to “oh”, so Zhou -> “Joh”. The “i” in Zi is an unvoiced vowel. This means that instead of saying “zee”, simply pronounce it as “zzz” (like a buzzing bee sound). So Zi -> “zz”. Finally, there’s Yu, which is the hardest. The “y” sound is the same as you would usually pronounce it in English! However, the “u” sound is actually “ü”. To pronounce this, say “eeee” then round /purse your lips into an “o” shape. When you do this, your lips should be the only part of your mouth that moves. Don’t move your teeth, tongue, or jaw!!! So Yu -> “Yü”. To put that all together, Zhou Ziyu is pronounced like “Joh Zz-yü”!!
@@selohcin I think I’m going to start tutoring again over the summer! Little too busy at my current job to do so 😭 Pronunciation was my favorite thing to teach. Thank you!
As a swedish person, most of the "hard sounds" in her name already exist in my language so it's just piecing together the sounds into one word for me lol
In German there are always sounds really similar (Tsch & ü - ü being pronounced "deeper" than you'd usually), funnily enough people with deep voice saying "Tschüss" which means bye in a deeper voice almost sound as if they're saying her name
Right! I was thinking the exact same thing. The "yu" part really just sounds like a Swedish U or Y haha. I always thought "chewy" was the right pronunciation cause I never heard her say her own name.
Brazilian here and we have the one of the hardest syllables in the word: "-ão". I fell so blessed to be brazilian since we have such a rich language. I learn new languages so easily, thanks to that 😂
I'm a spanish native speaker, and yes it's hard for me to pronounce Tzuyu's name. So, I say something that sounds like Chzu-i in spanish or Chzoo-ee in english, like Zooey Deschanel with a ch sound at the begining. By the way, Dahyun's lips are so beautiful 😍.
I find it fascinating that every language uses different muscles in the mouth to speak, so it's not always that its difficult to pronounce but more that you aren't used to using certain muscles in the mouth.
im a native russian speaker and I don't really understand why this sound might be hard for koreans, because we share almost all of the vowels, including the "eu" sound along with "i" and some diphthongs (just basic "yu", "yo", "ya") and it's quite easy to pronounce once you combine the eu and ee but also we cyrillize Tzuyu's name as "Ch'zhou Tzeuyuy" (Чжоу Тзыюй).....
well all languages vary in the number of phonemes, that's like saying I don't understand why koreans can't pronounce the "rr" like hispanics do, simple their language doesn't have that phoneme, korean has 28 phonemes while russian has 42 phonemes (according to the internet) so that would explain it lol
@@chuusupremacy I see your point and agree, but that's a bit different, since longer rolling "r"s simply don't exist in korean and many other asian languages. in the case of this vid, Dahyun tries a brand new phoneme (the "yú"), I was a bit puzzled abt it since the phonemes koreans might combine to create this sound are 99% identical to ones in my language, down to being described in textbooks simply as "the same as __"
They usually use a koreanized pronunciation for Tzuyu’s name (Chewie) because the original pronunciation would be pretty much impossible for non mandarin speakers in everyday conversations. I’m guessing this was also the company’s idea, to make Tzuyu more marketable to a korean and international audience
I wonder if it's because she's been calling Tzuyu by "Chewy" for the longest time because Kim is pretty good attempting other languages. Her pronunciation isn't bad.
Japanese is the easiest to pronounce. Everything is light and not many changes. Korean is next. Mandarin / Cantonese is nearly impossible. Theoretically, I understand what tonal means. In reality, it’s impossible. Side note: impossible to memorize all the Japanese characters and Chinese ones (unless full time studying). Korean is the easiest language to be fluent and read / write. Korean was intentionally designed for the common person.
No worries u probably got it right bc she never said actually "Dahyun" in this clip, she only introduced herself in Chinese with the Chinese version of her name which is Jin Duoxian
Her name should've been written as "joh joo-ee" or "chou juie" something like that which is similar to her name pronunciation bcz then people would say "cho-tzu-you"
Honestly, I've always said it like "Soo-ee" which I'm sure is wildly wrong. It is a really difficult name to pronounce, at least for me as a native English speaker. In my mind, the "yu" part sounds kind of like "wuU" or "Uuw"
It's interesting that it's hard for Koreans to pronounce, since we have all of these sounds in English already (at least British English) so I found it confusing at first that people couldn't say her name

being french, the U is very easy. It's a very common letter.
