Kelly being confused about how to pronounce Tzuyu is so relatable as an American Once lol. I think every one of us went through that confusion when we first got into Twice.
me; grown man; 2019 twice lights; floor section; talking with other ONCEs for the first time ever; other grown men near me; we're all discussing how to say literally most of their names especially tzuyu and we all admitted its the first time we've ever tried speaking their names out loud; some nice girls helped us out. it was pretty funny.
Whoever that translated Chinese into the Roman alphabet had no right to make such a dirty job

Yeah. Out of all the American hosts who've interviewed them, Kelly was the most engaged. You can tell she wasn't putting it on for the viewers either. I'm sure there's been more in-depth interviews and whatnot, but how often do you see TWICE show their real personalities to a Western host like this? I mean... Tzuyu was talking and cracking jokes!

also loved the effort she put into knowing the proper pronunciation of their names, not introducing them as just TWICE but actually introducing them individually, and she apologizes if she wasn't pronouncing them right. That, to me, is the highest form of respect and I'm so grateful to Kelly for being so welcoming to our girls. My respect for her as a host, singer, and even just as a human being has increased tenfold due to this interview.

I think out of any American show, they feel the most comfortable on Kelly Clarkson's show. Most American shows don't treat them with respect and not understanding that they are not fluent in English or familiar with western culture. I think she did her research before having Twice on her show.
She was definitely making sure none of the members who are less engaged and less confident in interviewed usually were involved they seemed to all have a good time!

That’s not really how it’s pronounced though.. they pronounce it like this is Korea because they can’t say “zuu-yuu” which is actually how it’s pronounced
@@protestmyhero5613 She's got a particularly tricky name to pronounce for non-Chinese-speakers. For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure it's not quite pronounced "zuu-yuu" either (i.e. doesn't rhyme with "you), and would probably be best pronounced as "tze-yee" (with the "e" in "tze" sounding more like a cross with the "a" in "about") or "tze-yuee" (with only a very mild and quick "u" sound in the "yuee" part).

I really like how Kelly asked them open-ended questions and also gave them time to think about their answer before responding. I think she knew that letting Twice control the narrative of the interview would help make them feel more comfortable being there and it shows. I hope other programs follow her example. I remember cringing so hard when Ellen DeGeneres asked BTS if they hooked up with their fans. It’s like if she or her producers did any homework on that group or even Korean culture generally, she would’ve realized how out of pocket a question like that was.
Also, Jeongyeon’s reaction when she said she had a beautiful speaking voice was so cute, lol.

@@maanokay2553 oh yeah, but at the time that was Ellen’s shtick is that she would ask her celebrity guests really personal and embarrassing questions to get a reaction out of them (and because Ellen is a terrible human being). I think it’s one thing to do it to a celebrity from the US that is used to and usually expects that kind of question as opposed to someone who isn’t from here and has no idea how inappropriate that kind of behavior is.
Yeah, i cringed too. I remember watching the video and after that part I clicked off😭. I get it, as a question like that is nothing to westerners, but I’m pretty sure everyone’s aware of how conservative it is asking a question like that to someone from the east. So weird.

Edit: I'm such a ONCE that I always get hung up on Tsuyu's name in My Hero Academia. I always want to call her Tzuyu, and I have to catch myself, despite speaking more Japanese than Korean.

@@Why_Do_I_Need_A_Handle_Name Tzuyu and I speak two different Chinese languages, mine being Taiwanese Hokkien and hers being Taiwanese Mandarin, but, assuming her name is pronounced the same in both, it would be more of a "zuu-yuu". It's hard to describe, but the 'z' sounds like a combination of a T and a Z, so it is very light and is enunciated almost like trying to make a bird chirp from behind the front teeth, if that makes any sense. The 'y' is also extremely light. Without listening closely, it can almost sound more like "zuu-uu" with no 'y' at all and it is enunciated almost toward the throat instead of at the top of the mouth. I hope this makes remotely any sense!

On Japanese TV shows, the subtitles write Tzuyu's name how it sounds. So, there's no confusion like Kelly Clarkson had with it being spelled Tzuyu but pronounce "tzu-ee".

Love these girls. The Inglewood show is coming up and I can't wait. As far as pronouncing Chewy, I was at TwiceKcon LA in 2018. Okay, it was Kcon, but it was the year of Twice there. Someone on the floor threw a Chewbacca stuffed animal to her, and I think it really cemented it. Even though they were wildly popular before and that was already into the DTNA era when they were already stars. That being said, how do you start out with a song literally titled, "I'm going to be a star" and six years later you are still one of the top grossing acts in the world? Mad props, love you girls.
Let me quick correct that. TwiceKcon might not have been the beginning of Tzuyu going with Chewy, but as someone from the States, that was the first time I heard that pronunciation of Chewy, as I tried to say each letter. Chewy seems to be what she prefers, and if not, Tzuyu let us know. Love you girl.
