One of the main book in Shattariya is Jawahirul Khams,in Arabic. I live in South East Asia and the Shattariyah Sufi Order here doesn't use the Yoga, may be because the origin of the order from Hijjaz. Shattariyah was introduced to Hijjaz by Shaikh Sibghatullah, the student of Shaikh Wajihuddin Alawi of Bengal. The Shattariyah in South East Asia came with two waves, 1st by the students of Mulla Ibrahim al-Kurani and second by the Malay Patani teacher, Shaikh Daud al-Fatani who became one of the teachers in Masjidil Haram. Coming in two waves but all are from the same line of transmission or sanad.

Although you only have my word for it, i am several decades younger than my biological age (my resting heart rate is 50 bpm). • @funeducationalvideos3371
      @funeducationalvideos3371 Месяц назад +1

Why "modern postural yoga"? Sounds contrived.
Good explantion of Yoga in the first half of the video. But why steal thousands of years of work of Hindu rishis/yogis by stripping it of its inspiration and call it modern/secular? That ends up in ungratefulness and Cultural Appropriation (which the West has done too much of to Hinduism). One would be left doing stretching, not Yoga.
Also, Hindus did not wish to learn from Islam because of Islam's concept of divisive otherism (Muslims vs Kaffirs) and Apostacy punishments, which is an antithesis of the Hindu worldview of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (united world family), let alone allowing it to influence its Yoga traditions.
Everyone was & is free to learn Yoga/Pranayama/Dhyaana/Ayurveda/Karma from Hinduism to improve their daily lives, even while saying they identify as Muslims/Christians etc. Why? Because Hinduism never bothered to "convert people". But at least have the rather basic awareness to not culturally appropriate.
Remember, Hindus don't go to any Islamic/Christian retreats to improve their daily lives, but millions of Muslims/Christians come to Hindu Yogic retreats to improve theirs.

Well, all I can say is, why are there yoga poses carved in Chola age temples including postures such as tree, cobra, bow, shoulderstand, warrior poses etc.? I would not take Mark Singleton as a source as he had been trying to prove yoga as un-Indian for a long while in blog articles. He was set out with his hypothesis first and did his best. But what he did not do was look at Tamil sources as the Thirumantaram etc. or the ancient martial arts such as Kalipayatru that used warrior poses similar to the ones used in Krishnamacharya's hatha yoga that David Life learned from. Nor did he look at old paintings and carvings in temples. Hatha yoga postures are designed for directing the flow of prana. India also had other physical culture practices too. Max Alding, who made body building popular at the turn of the century found his inspiration from the Indian muscle men and even wrote a book about them. Well we could even go back to the Mahabharata and Bheema if we are talking about those who have devoted their lives to physical excellence. I hope you read this. You have been doing great work but associating with the likes of Mark Singleton will ruin the reputation of this channel as real information gets discovered by those with honest curiosity about the origins of physical yoga.

The definition of Yoga from the Katha Upanishad given at 4:40, of stilling the perceptions and mind, combined with the meaning of “bringing together”, sounds the same as the concept of Samadhi - a different Sanskrit word for a state of being or mind achieved in meditation in both Buddhist and Hindu practice. Samadhi also means gathering together. I wonder how practitioners - particularly Hindu - conceive of the distinction (I practice a form of Buddhism predicated on the early texts, which I think do not make reference to Yoga, so more of a question for the Hindu practice I think).
Edit: the video does go on to talk about Samadhi later. But the question still stands regarding the use and definition of Yoga in the Katha Upanishad.

A favourite singular Zen story - that can be universalised - in Yoga meditation methods - too.
Master moves to the mountains - with an advanced aspirant. Master - as both guide and inspiration.
Soon they are travelling over increasingly difficult terrain - until they come - to the very peak. Rest ordered.
After some time - the Master says: 'Now comes the real work'.
He stands up - and proceeds to take - rising steps - in the air - above the mountain - to the aspirant' s astonishment.
Started meditation early - and always felt that something vital and useful - had awakened and that one would always have this resource available - if one practiced and researched this -in an intense way.
So - the real magic of the meditation method - is always awakened - in this way - by the capable human master.
No other learning methods - like books etc - can even summon this - or even help one - fully realise - the human spiritual goal of life.
It needs the linking - of hearts - with love - merging even this - into Divine love - itself.
Fare thee well - on life's journey.

Super interesting. At 18:47 when you make the distinction between jhana yoga and sankya, both are used in Advaita Vedanta. Practices such as jhana, bhakti, dhyana, and karma, can all be found in the upanshids. Interesting though Adi Sankara united all these into non duality using logic with the practise of meditation and knowledge of the absolute.
A rope appears to be a snake on a dark trail. Similarly The body appears to project consciousness, but consciousness projects the body.
The sky appears to be blue. Like wise, the mind and body appear within consciousness.
Is water different from a wave?
Is clay separate from the clay pot? Similarly, mind and body cannot be different from consciousness. That which appers to consciousness is nothing other than consciousness itself.

'I would advise that instead of pondering over how the universe came into existence, we should admire the Being that brought it into existence' (Ram Chandra)
It would seem to vitally include - the methods of karma, jnana and bhakti yoga elements - therein.
It is also - the reason for raja yoga - the training of the human will and the mastering of the mind.

The term 'yoga' comes from the stem 'yug' - to bind or to connect. (Aspirant to the Divine)
While alive - and practicing Yoga - one will be helped - with issues of health - exercise - science of breathing - even sleeping (yoga nidra) - issues of applied thinking and practice of meditation - calmness - and even the development of intuition.
There are normal human experiences - one works with - and also the advanced spiritual
    training available.
Therefore - the applied version of yoga - 'skill in action'.
Not only life skills - but the theory - as the soul leaves the body - moving through the chakras - is also a developed yoga science. The afterlife and the vibrations and process ?
Fare thee well - on life's journey.

The origin of yoga is Instinctual Pandiculation. It is metabolic. When the body is still, calcium accumulates, and intracellular mitochondrial communication causes the body to move and stretch without thought.
Once the biochemical environment is upregulated a permanent flow state is achieved. The body then heals through morphogenic resonance restoring the physical structure at the genetic baseline (morphogenesis resume). Morphostasis is achieved, providing “immortality” though cellular regeneration.
Innate savant abilities come forth such as knowledge over nature, bacteria, the role of nutrition in evolution, along with use of language and tools.
This is the biochemistry of all religion. It ties together all of your themes and research. It is the answer to the paradoxical riddle that haunts your dreams 🐛🦋🧬🧠

@@Sundar... it’s on my reading list. I have only read his Wikipedia bio. I think he enjoyed some good cheese while in Switzerland 😉
The “loss of memory and relearning” is due to shutting down the frontal lobe via vascular modulation. This is how flow states work. I had to learn how to walk, talk, and do basic cognitive tasks all over again. It is a long process to rebuild the mind to operate via bottom-up processing, allowing the brain stem full control. Effectively you are sleepwalking, while consciously observing yourself in action. You give up all control, and live in flow. It is a radical alteration of how your biochemistry functions. It is all controlled via the diet.
I have spent every day since that moment researching neurobiology and biochemistry to build a framework of understanding. I will compile and publish it when I have completed rebuilding my body, and mind.
Rapid neurogenesis is an exhausting experience, this is why people retreat from society to silence and stillness. One becomes as an infant again, requiring silence, solitude, and a diet that replicates the nutritional construct of breast milk - the perfect meal for the mind and body 🧀🍖🧠

Yoga simply means "Union," and the different forms of yoga are pathways to unite with the Universal oneneness. It's not just about physical postures or acrobatic exercises. There are primarily four types of yoga:
    1) Bhakti Yoga (Path of Devotion) - This is the yoga of love and devotion, where one surrenders to the divine through prayer, chanting, and worship.
2)Karma Yoga (Path of Service and Duty) - This path emphasizes selfless action, where one dedicates all actions to the divine without attachment to the results.
3)Jnana Yoga (Path of Knowledge) - This is the yoga of wisdom, focusing on the study of sacred texts and self-inquiry to attain spiritual enlightenment.
    5) Raja Yoga (Path of Meditation) - Often referred to as the "royal path," this type of yoga involves meditation, discipline, and the practice of mental control to achieve a deep connection with the divine and the physical postures to allign the body.
Each of these paths leads to the ultimate goal of union with the Universal Oneness, providing different approaches to spiritual growth depending on one's nature and inclinations.

I think a lot of the way modern yoga is viewed as purely secular in the west has a lot to do with the work of many European orientalists in the 19th century, who were deeply enamoured with Asian religions, but sought to find ways to re-interpret them, without feeling in conflict with their strict christian heritage. Several of my Indian and American teachers work with the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali (which focuses on a version of Dhyāna Yoga), with the Jñāna (Jñ conjunct pronounced like gy, gyahna), Bhakti, and Karma Yoga of the Bhagavad Gītā, with the philosophy of Advaita Vedānta, and with Haṭha Yoga as essential foundations for the esoteric Tantric Yoga of the Śrī Vidyā tradition. Patañjali wrote in a way that was explicitly non-sectarian for the time, with Īśvara being a flexible (albeit masculine) term for an omniscient and omnipotent being that Śaivas or Vaiṣṇavas (or later Śāktas) can each associate with their chosen deities. Dualism, Unity-in-Duality, and Non-Duality are all valid, polarized conceptualizations of a primordial Reality that simultaneously transcends and expresses itself through all polarities.
My favorite yoga teachers have perennialist tendencies related to relatively recent saints like Rāmakṛṣṇa and Rāmaṇa Mahārṣi, whereas some of my more sectarian teachers (e.g. Trika Śaiva Tantra teachers who hate and philosophically misrepresent Buddhism and Vedānta in their arguments) have repeatedly demonstrated that their experiential insight is relatively superficial and that they tend to rely heavily on various Sanskrit texts that are biased in sectarian and caste-ist ways, as well as on bigoted and misleading stereotypes regarding historically rival lineages.

Trika (Kashmir Shaivism) is some of the finest developments of Tantra; Along with the Tibetan tradition (Bon/Buddhism) and the Northeastern tradition (modern day Assam/Bengal), the use of Mantras, deities, symbols (yantras) and rituals developed into sophisticated systems along with very important centers for practice.
Since you mentioned sectarianism, you must understand that the use of Smriti knowledge (eg. Dharmashastras etc.) were products of their times, and nothing more. Every civilization back then had to have a worker/slave class. Experiential insight is important so long as it is reflected upon to help guide you once you are grounded in practice, and practically or experientially grasp the basics of the nature of reality around you. Through a Guru's guidance, you fully imbibe it, and act out like you understand it without any dissonance. In the Jnana Marga (or Gnana path related to specific traditions), this is commonly referred to as Nidhidhyaasana.
Since you took Sri Ramakrishna's name, his experiential unity or Jivanmukti was unlocked by the guidance of Avadhutha Thothapuri, a Tantric sage of heterodoxical bent who didn't even articulate his experiential insight to Ramakrishna, let alone the world. Just imparted pure spiritual guidance. In India, multiple Siddhas walk the land (very many real ones although most of them are charlatans these days, quite sadly). They don't seek to teach or change the world or spread their teachings but guide people on their spiritual journeys.
These statements may seem tangential but are very relevant to your critique of Trika in the sense that you are not getting from it what you are looking for. Please don't hesitate to be more specific.
And a blessed Gurupoornima to you. Om Sri Gurubhyo Namaha.

Very interesting video, Filip. I have been researching this topic for a long time. Yoga, like all religious practices, has evolved over time. It started as a religious practice aimed at bringing one closer to realizing the nature of God and reality. As you correctly pointed out, the Yoga Sutras encourage one to find meaning in life and connect with God through physical acts, often accompanied by the chanting of Hindu gods' names. The nearest equivalent to yoga in Islam is Dhikr, performed by Sufis. In the West, yoga is usually associated with spirituality and secularism. For yoga to remain secular, one should avoid chanting Hindu gods' names; otherwise, it becomes a religious practice and worship.
One can argue and question why the attitude of the western population toward Yogo, which has its roots in Hinduism, so tolerant while Sufism/Islam is associated with negativity.

Yoga is not about chanting of Gods names..it is beyond the physical postures which are the Asanas, these postures are just a small part of the huge yoga traditions..it is also beyond the pranayamic practices. The 'secular' yoga you are talking about is mainly Hatha -yoga, pranayama and dhyana yoga (meditation). YOGA is a philosophy of realising the Self...Hathayoga, dhyana yoga are merely the tools.. Hindusim and many pther Dharmic religions talk about the 'Aatman' or true Self. The chantings, rituals are just a small part of the tradition..so upto you to think of it as religious practice..if chanting is a religious practice so are the Yogasanas and the pranayama practices by the same logic as all three are mere small steps and milestones that lead to a bigger goal...that is 'realising the Self'...And also, why a taboo around the word 'religion' or chanting ? In Dharmic religions, be it Hindusim or Buddhism..chanting is a practice that is used to stabilize the mind..and practice of chanting of 'Ishta' deva's ' name is there. Ishta deva means your 'personal God' what name you chant is not important.. one can chant whoever you consider as your 'God' . Buddhism does not have a concept of God, so they chant Buddha's name. The focus should be on what is the purpose of chanting rather than what name is being used in the chanting and whether by chanting, it becomes a tabooed 'religious ' practice...that is infact immaterial
Practice of yoga which is just centred around bodily and mental faculties is not what was focus of yoga. They are mere smaller milestones to realise the higher purpose and that is the Self.

Well I think that is an easy question to answer . Is there any generalized recommendations or references to violence in vedantic texts.
Sufism such as the poetry of Rumi is well loved in the west .
Islamic fundamentalism, which seems to be ubiquitous in the west , is replete in the west . Even at speaker's corner in London Muslims openly say that they want Sharia law in the west . They also openly say that apostates should be killed .
The security services in the UK have prevented hundreds of intended terrorist attacks by Islamists , a few by right wing extremists , but none as far as I know by Hindus , Buddhists or Jain's .
It's hardly surprising that islamic fundamentalism is feared in the west - not just by westerners but also by former Muslims . There are some wonderfully brave ex Muslims on RUclips who risk their lives talking about their experiences of islam .
Ask the Yezedi people if they think Islam is a religion of peace ? ? ?
I have great sympathy for some of the Sufis - particularly the ones Filip has spoken of on here , because I see many parallels with Advaita Vedanta which is my favourite philosophy.
Judging by what filip has mentioned on here and how the Sufis were influenced by yoga , maybe they weren't Muslims after all as the fundamentalists say .
My favourite Sufi was Mansur Al Halaj whose life and ending parallels Christ's in so many ways . 🙏🕉️

@@michaeldillon3113 You are forgetting that fundamentalism or extremism can exist in any religion and society. You mentioned Hinduism and Buddhism but you did not address the lynching of Muslims in India by the Hindu extremist groups and killing of Rohingya population in Burma by the Buddhist extremist group. Why do you think that is?

Sure just steal thousands of years of work of Hindu rishis/yogis by stripping it of its inspiration (Vedas & Ishwara) and call it secular. Cultural Appropriation at its worst (which the West has done too much of to Hinduism). One would be left doing stretching, not Yoga.
Also, Hindus did not wish to learn from Islam because of Islam's divisive otherism (Muslims vs Kaffirs) and Apostacy punishments, which is an antithesis of the Hindu worldview of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (united world family), let alone allowing it to influence its Yoga traditions.
Everyone was & is free to learn from Hinduism to improve their lives, even while saying they identify as Muslims/Christians etc. Why? Because Hinduism never bothered to "convert people". But at least have the rather basic awareness to not culturally appropriate.
Remember, Hindus dont go to any Islamic/Christian retreats to improve their daily lives, but millions of Muslims/Christians come to Hindu Yogic retreats to improve theirs.
Learning without gratefulness is never fruitful for long.

Good explantion of Yoga. But why steal thousands of years of work of Hindu rishis/yogis by stripping it of its inspiration and call it secular? That ends up in ungratefulness and Cultural Appropriation (which the West has already done too much of to Hinduism). One would be left doing stretching, not Yoga.

I have a suggestion, could you please add references to the images shown in your videos, I think it would help to contextualize the image to the narration and make it easier for us to search further in some scripts, paitings, or artists shown.

Really well done! Whether people are comfortable with India or Hindu spirituality, the truth is that even basic asana practice cannot be separated from India, or spiritual and philosophical traditions that are complex and continue to develop. Honestly, I think it is a legacy of colonialism to try to separate Indian religious practice from asana practice. The West always wants to condescend to the East and dismiss its influence, even as we seek it, as though we can only admire Eastern culture if we also know how to put it down.

You did not do justice to the yoga sutras, you misrepresented eshwara pranidhana, in that you did not describe eashwara peoperly, eshwara is not God, it is beyond Your god, it is essentially the controller of the universe, the interacts with nature, manages nature, complements nature, the prakriti.
Also you whitewashed 1000 violent years of Islamic invasion and oppression in india, right under the guidance and influence of sufis, cherry picking your dara shikohs. Please stay away from history, not your forte.

This guy has a bias towards islam, I think he is Sufi Islamist. He intentionally crafted this video to dis credit Hinduism. He haven't provided much quotes from Hindu philosophers, saints or scriptures, just stated bunch of western interpretations on yoga and Hinduism and made a video. In the last part he is telling that nobody has clear definition of yoga and doesn't know to whom yoga belongs to? 😂😂😂

No slight intended, but "Gralstank" immediately hit my "ah, my Viking metal cover/tribute band to Hoobastank" button.
Also, yoga, in this context, is very similar conceptually to the definition of magick (and probably part of why yoga was integrated into many of the practices) he gave for Thelema- as stated in "Magick in theory and in practice": Magick Science and Art that provokes Change in conformity with the Will.
And also, similar to his "mission statement" of the O.T.O: Our method is Science, our aim is Religion

Love your work, great job overall. However, Paramahansa Yogananda did not advocate for the postural yoga as you are suggesting. His system barely resembles anything you would see at a yoga studio in 2024. His teaching were about inner work and self studyas well as sef-observance.
