Happy wheeling !

what a weapon, my 106 is no where near as crazy as yours but it still is so surprising where she will go, often out driving more modern 4wds with ease. I just got back from doing the Simpson Desert and she ate it up. Much love for the luxys.
Got a soft spot for the old Luxys, just can’t beat their style. Would have been and unreal trip across the simo mate!
This is insane! Love the makeover...Happy to see people are still in love with the older luxies. Our 106 also needs an upgrade, thanks for the vid as it has really good tips..cheers!
I’m obsessed with these older luxys and plan on building another one really soon! Excited to start from scratch and film it as I go
Now, I understand when people mean when they say something flexes like a sick giraffe.
In my opinion it's more like a newborn one. But still the same.
It flexes ludicrous amounts.
A fair bit of investment, but judging from the smile on your face and reaction, it was worth every cent for you.
For me it’s worth everything I put into it. Always look forward to driving it when and where I can, still smile like a kid every time
@@HaydnKamp And that's what is most important.
Awesome vid mate. Very useful info. I'm just across the ditch and hoping to do what you've done if the funds arise. Currently have a bmw m5 v10 sitting in it which I just need to plumb up but will only be 2wd for the time being sadly. More track vids would be sick too! Keep up the good work.
Sounds like a weapon! Definitely need to do some wheeling videos soon 🤘🏻
that’s crazy mate, probably the best 106 I’ve ever seen, would love to drive that thing. looks so smooth as well. The flex is insane
Thanks mate! It’s alot more comfortable then when I first got it but it’s still no coil cab in the rough stuff 😅
Awesome vid mate. Keen to look at doing my front end. And unfortunately I may have to start looking at tundra leaves 🙈
Worth the effort man!!
Ive just got myself an RN105 that has been engine swapped with a commodore V6 ecotec engine, has had some work done to the suspension, cant wait to get it up to spec and get it out on the tracks. It is a project truck for my two boys and I. Love the old HiLux's
They are bloody great Utes and a lot of fun 🤘🏻
@@HaydnKamp been great so far, just chasing some electrical gremlins from engine conversion atm.
@@TheDeansAroundOz yeah that’s no fun
Great work mate! I’ve been putting off finishing my 89 IFS 4Runner in the hope of going full three link/ coilovers with SAS but this has me thinking differently 😊
Cheers mate! Leaf springs do impressive things when set right 🤘🏻
@@HaydnKamp thoughts on ladder bar to reduce long leaf axle wrap in the back?
Would definitely help, I haven’t bothered as it doesn’t seem to be an issue with 80hp 🤣
Awesome video and project Haydn
Thanks Paul!! Appreciate it 🤘🏻
That is mint Bro! Well done!
Thanks Mate!!
My 88 duel cab is only on 31s but still goes a lot of places and pretty stock only put a steel tray on it..
They don’t need much to be fairly capable 🤘🏻
The cost of 4wds has become insane, to the point where I did the exact same thing...
Found a clean one owner KZN165R and bought that...keeping approx $50k extra in my account over what it would have cost to get into a new unmodified dual cab...let alone a modern cruiser.
And in the end you’ll end up going more places with less worries and having a shit load more fun in a vehicle that the bank doesn’t own.
More money for fuel, food, beer and memories 🤘🏻
Good o'll HiLux never die brother❤💫
Awesome vid. Love those tundras. I’m stealing that idea next lux build. Sick build.
Cheers!! Seems to do all the right things so far 🤘🏻
Wow! Amazing! 👌🤤!! I want to do the same with my suspension! This is the perfect set up
Cheers!! Works well for what I want to put it through 🤘🏻
Awesome man.
I got a 1995 and was looking for ideas thanks
Happy to help mate!
Thanx for sharing the video Haydn. What an amazing rig you've made. An ultimate flexing Hilux. Cheers.
Cheers Barry!
Highly recommended putting in a high pinion front diff centre. Great build. Brings back memories.
Front shaft has told me to do the same a few times as you might have noticed 😅
@@HaydnKamp na talking from experience. Also get a long spline tail shaft. 105 series landcruiser runs 4.3 high pinion centre.
This is awesome. My first 4x4 was a 94 extra cab hilux, I regret selling it. Amazing build! Oh my god I Thought you were joking about the 44 gallon drum!
My first car was an ln106 just like this was even the same year, I regret selling it too. It seemed like a bit of a stretch at the start but it sits above one quite easily now 👌🏼
@@HaydnKamp My cousin bought the old girl and he still has it, he doesn't plan to ever sell it, but I'm first in line if he does! You're right, always late in a 2.8. I'm rocking a Troopy now, and it reminds me of the basic rattling noisy tough beast that was the ln106. Toyota make the best stuff!
They never quit! Gotta love the old Toyotas 🤘🏻
Mate a simple process to your video, build and your approach. Keep up the good work and also along the keeping up with costs. The next step will always be more power.
Thanks mate! Torn between decent turbo setup or a turbo 3rz
@@HaydnKamp I'm actually thinking of going 1UZ-FE in my ln106, some people even supercharge them and sounds mad ruclips.net/video/9SfCB2gy3AU/видео.html
3RZ it mate
That’s the end plan 🤘🏻 stay tuned
Bro I've easy watched this video a dozen times now 😂 Packed full of awesome info and inspiration! Do you know where I could find measurements of those tundra springs?
Thanks man!! They are roughly 1600mm long and front eye to centre pin is roughly 810mm
Had a look online and I had no luck so just threw a tape over them for ya 🤘🏻
What a weapon 👌
Great video. Motivating stuff
Thanks man!
Dude, As always another awesomeeee video brother, it’s jacko btw watching it for the second time ahahah absolutely frothing and really hope I can turn my old lux into a beast like yours
Cheers Jacko!! They’re a little beast from the factory 🤘🏻
Have you ever thought about revolver shackles if so why not what are there cons
I had a half assed go at trialing them. Wasn’t a fan.
Hey mate love the build I also own a LN106 single cab! Just wanted to know when you put ifs leafs in the rear do you use standard height or 2”?
Cheers
Cheers man! Wicked Utes 🤘🏻
I just used standard and reset them in the press and removed a load leaf to get the height I wanted
Hi mate love it ! About to go from
Modern diesel 4x4 to 106 and tossing up some things eg on road performance highways, towing tinny etc and comfort as a Daily … end goal is to do the lap .. would you recommend as a tourer or stick to the modern dual cab ?
Honestly the Ln106 would do it all but if your doing the lap, I’d say you’d rather be in a modern dual cab. Would be a lot better on fuel, decent aircon, comfy seats and all the creature comforts of a vehicle that’s not built from 70’s technology 😅
In saying that, I absolutely love touring in the Ln106, it’s hard work but super rewarding and never a dull moment 🤘🏻
How do you find the auto lockers are in front and rear I’ve heard they make some noise
Also where did you get your turbo kit I have an oil ln106 with over 400ks it doesn’t haven any blow by so want to turbo it but don’t wanna spend heaps of money on a turbo kit
The lockers make noise as they do their thing, doesn’t bother me in this Ute. Not ideal for road use in the rear but hasn’t caused me any issues. Unreal off road with both. Turbo kit is just an old eBay copy of a CT20. I wouldn’t bother with a cheap turbo kit, very little gain for big risk of failure.
I got a "Lokka" brand in my sons 106 front and don't even hear it, I would not bother to go air or electric on the front because it is only engaged on the track. And the tight LSD on the rear does just fine.
What a stunning Lux, I would prefer to buy an unmolested older ute and do it my way... The cost of new utes today is ridiculous. You have a ripper 4wd, enjoy !! 👍
Thanks! I can’t justify spending new car money either to take it properly off road. Pockets aren’t that deep 😅
Best way to do it in my opinion, at least you know what’s been done and if you’ve done it yourself you have more chance sorting things if they go wrong.
Very Nice Toyota like what you have done Thanks
Thanks Darran!
hey mate, just wanting to know, what bullbar are you running on the rig? Ive been looking for one for a while but thay ones looking pretty good.
I’m pretty certain it’s a TJM bar
@@HaydnKamp ive looked at their site and nothing like it seems to be that shape it might be older not sure but thanks for the help
looked very nice when u got it
The first time I saw it I knew I had to have it
Hey mate, love your setup! I've just picked up a 94 dual cab ln106 but it's my first 4x4 and I've got a lot to learn, any advice on where to start learning about the old luxy?
It’s amazing the info that’s online these days but nothing beats meeting up with like minded people and talking about Hiluxs for hours 😅
I live in the Rocky Mountains of Canada now I’d love to see one of these crawl the mountains. Not many hilux/land cruisers out here, more land cruisers than hilux. However a lot of the guys here take their Toyotas and do “1 tons and 40s”. Not sure if your department of transportation/local police would feel with a full size axle from a full size pick up on a road legal Ute. But definitely a major upgrade for the snow wheelers
One of my dreams is to wheel up there, you live in an incredible part of the world!
Our department of transport would like to put us all in jail for going one size larger tyres then factory down here 😂
@@HaydnKamp heh that’s rough I think in British Columbia at least… we are allowed 44” tires, maximum 2” poke from fender or flares or mudflaps. Not many people running 44s in town lmao. Most run 40s with outrageous lift kits. Some show trucks, pavement princesses and a lot of wheelers but most wheelers aren’t road legal lol. If you could. You’d have to stay for an entire year to get the best of every season! Snow wheeling is so much fun and so expensive! Big blocks, twin turbos, nitrous, blowers, 2.5 tons and 58s. Crazy stuff out here for snow
Sounds like what dreams are made of!! I wish our road laws where more relaxed over here. I’ve driven in the snow once and it was a hard time. Could imagine it would be unreal with a proper setup vehicle for it 🤘🏻
@@HaydnKamp you can spend north of $200k building a snow wheeler. 2.5 tons, 58” tires on double bead locks, hydro steer front and rear, triangulated 4 link, you won’t get stuck even in 4-5 feet of snow. Turbo LS, or Big block but you’d want 1000hp/750kw or more for a snow wheeler especially on 2.5 tons axles or bigger
Hi Haydn, What Brish bars and sliders did you end up getting? or did you custom make them?
Sliders are made by ‘Tony shires fabrication’ and brush bars made by ‘Outlaw Kuztomz’
Hey mate I got a question, heard there is a bit of a problem with the hilux and it tipping, have you widened your axles at all?
Sure did, it’s got a n60 rear diff housing and axles and also ifs hubs up front to match the rear width. The hiluxs got the name ‘rollux’ for a reason 😅
would u ever consider building another one of these
I tried recently but ran out of money and had to sell it 🤣
Love the build man!!! Can I ask what you do for work? Cheers man
I’m a marine mechanic, work on outboard motors and PWC’s
Beautiful Ute,,
Been dreaming of building one meslf
Cheers Andrew! Its a great process
Hey, by 13.5 inch shocks do you mean when they are stroked in or out? Cheers
Yeah 13.5 inchs of total travel from fully compressed to fully extended
how come the u-bolts aren't snug up against the diff?
Diffs a funny shape, does my head in everytime I look at them 😂
Always checking tension and they never seem to move or loosen so all good so far
What a beast
Thanks !
@@HaydnKamp no worries
Nice build mate and good to see some out of the box thinking with the rear end springs👍Just wondering if you have ever put yours over the weighbridge? Just wondring for towing reasons. cheers mate keep the vids coming
Thanks mate!! I’ve been meaning too do that. Would be good to know
@@HaydnKamp Yeah it would be interesting to know, as I'm looking to buy/build a Hilux or Zook as a social/comp rig. Depenting on the weight once built, that will determine the decision on what car I get, hopfuly the Hilux can come in at around that or just under the 2T mark, and I can still tow that weight. Cheers
Owning an LN106R I fell apart laughing when I read on the plate. " Always late in a 2.8" :)
I couldn’t help myself 😅
It would be great if I could work with you to get mine like yours❤❤
Teach me how to make my N70 the same! 😍
Hey mate I love the Ute . Can u help me build mine haha . Keep it up
Might take 2 years 😂
Does it have an intercooler, I’m guessing you don’t drive super long distances in the heat but do the temps stay down with the turbo?
Water temps are sweet and I don’t have any issues there but the egt temps are a bit of a worry on bigger drives. Definitely doesn’t like hills 😅
Should always run an intercooler
Which front bar is that?
Hi Do you need some great lighting for your car to help you better driving, off-road? We're the pro auto lighting manufacturer for nearly 20 year and we're looking for sponsorship!
can you please tell me what flares these are exactly want some on my ln106
There from 'OZ best deals' online store, seem to be holding up so far
How can i buy a rig in australia as i live here in usa...id like to come spend us summer...aus winter down under...approx 3 to 4 months every year...temps here are 108 to 112 til mid oct
Honestly wouldn’t have a clue how to go about that 😅
Could try ‘Carsales’ ‘Facebook marketplace’ or ‘Gumtree’ those are the main platforms for car sales here in Australia that I know of
@@HaydnKamp ok...thx🤠
did you use the diff center from the n60 in the rear
Still the standard centre just fitted with a lokka
That's a awesome ln106, how do you go with popo on 35s? Is it engineered?
Just gets driven at tracks mainly, it’s not
Haha funny /\ 🤣
What's your exhaust man 🤙🤙
Half rusted out 3inch pipe that goes into a hotdog style muffler. Needs to be replaced 😅
What inch lift rear springs did you put in the front?
Unsure, around 2ish but I reset them in the press to get the height I wanted
Sweet. How long are the tundra leaves
Over 1620mm from memory,m ight be wrong
@@HaydnKamp cheers bra. Sweet.
This is so cool
Good rig mate..I got a 96,ln106 and lluv it.about to upgrade some more stuff..
Cheers! They’re a good little weapon 🤘🏻
Got it g
how many ks does she got on her? .
beautiful ute btw.
Nearly cracked the big 400,000, so it’s nearly run in 😅
Awesome vid, subbed. What's your trade ?
Marine mechanic 👨🔧
@@HaydnKamp awesome, unique skill set, looks like you know a broad spectrum of stuff which is really cool. Looking forward to future vids.
My ln65 with stock 2L still the best😅 mighty slug
Work horse 🤘🏻
i drive mine all over thecountry, mostly off tracks , had i rear stiffening and shocks . meh
Mint weapon
Where did you get your rear leafs from?
The local ‘Tough dog’ suspension dealer
how many km's is to many on one of these bad boys ? cheers
Depends massively on how they are looked after. They can have issues with wear when oil changes are stretched to 10,000k intervals or it fuel system components are worn and cause it to get hot. A lot of things can shorten their life but I’d expect them to get well over 500,000k’s without being rebuilt if they are looked after
@@HaydnKamp even a petrol ?
@@TuqaPlayss yeah don't see why not
Badass
How many km are on it because $8500 is a fucking good deal for one of those
It’s got roughly 400,000 on the dash, barely run in
Time for some more track vids😉
It definitely is!!
what gear ratio do you have i
n your front diff???
Front and rear is 4.3
@@HaydnKamp i have a project build and have different ratio front is 4.1 and rear is 4.5 will it work or not?
very nice car
Cheers Ty 🤘🏻
How many k’s had the old girl done?
Pretty much 400,000k’s
Crazy money: saw a review on the Isuzu D-Max that said it was a good platform to build your 4WD on. Platform..? What happened to buying a capable 4WD like the FJ40?
Is it purchase culture? Buying stuff because buying stuff is fun.
Is it bravado? Not enough to go camping in a nice spot, now we have to drive up a cliff to get there.
Is it car manufacturers shorting R&D? That way, they save cash while you get to spend more money on ya beast.
Been thinking wether it’s a lack of talent or knowledge to be able to fix an older 4wd and just have the piece of mind of having a more ‘reliable’ newer 4wd.
Or it’s just the wank factor from having something new and letting the bank own it 😅
Sounds like it's time for 37s and an engine swap to spin them haha
Sneaky little turbo 3rz 😜
Wonder what’s more work.
3rz conversion on a ln106
Or a solid axle conversion on an RN model hilux and getting RUF/front coil conversion
Are you willing to sell your 106?
Anything’s for sale with the right price but it would be incredibly difficult to part with it
If I give you money can you do this to my Hilux
I’d love to build another one but I need more time to use it 👨🔧
21k including the ute is cheap when ya could of spent 5 times that for something that is half as capable
Was cheaper to buy and build up this entire Ute then to just sas my N70 and it still not be as capable!
still cheap really considering people spending 100k + on a 70 series
It blows my mind as to why, I’ve driven a few and I just can’t see the value unfortunately
Awesome Rig..
Cheers mate!
