Tinnitus - dark ambient mindfulness. No cure, just an alternative approach...

  • Ok, long story short. Tinnitus occurs when you experience ringing or other noises in one or both ears. Some people aren't very bothered by tinnitus. For other people, tinnitus disrupts their daily lives. It's usually caused by an underlying condition, such as age-related hearing loss, an ear injury, a circulatory system problem or a neuronal problem. In fact, science doesn't really know what it is and the first to find a cure will receive the Nobel Prize...
Lucky me, my hearing remains nevertheless well above average according to all tests I did. I just have a specific high frequency that I hear less and that my brain tries to “recreate”. Like a ghost sound. The funny thing is, my brain is basically trying to help me. For many people, tinnitus improves with treatment of the underlying cause or other treatments that reduce or mask the noise, making the tinnitus less noticeable.
I have tried several methods, met many specialists and of course some charlatans who take advantage of the situation (pay close attention to what certain “specialists” can tell you). I even tried the LENIRE project which costs a kidney and basically involves “masking” the noise and helping your brain “naturally” focus on something else. It's a good tool but the price is otherworldly.
Most of the music offered is often relaxing, soothing and peaceful. But I've noticed that when music tries to make me feel comfortable when I'm stressed, it causes (at least for me) the opposite reaction and often tends to annoy me more than anything else. That's maybe one of the reason why my music is rarely “funny” or blissful. But I also noticed that some white noise as well as rain and specific synth sounds helped.
Every tinnitus is different of course but this 20 minutes track covers the majority of mine that I sometimes have to strain to hear it while I listen to the track. Today I only hear it when I focus on it, thanks to this very track. But know that the first step toward "healing" is accepting it and listening to your body. No one has the answers to your questions, just clues.
So, with all the tools I have at hand, I decided to do it my way and I created my own “mindfulness therapy music” that I listen to twice every day through good headphones (nothing else, it has to be through headphones or it will definitely NOT WORK), with my eyes closed or while reading a book. But "my therapy" is based on dark and ominous ambient drones. I don't pretend that it will help you, I'm just saying that it helped me and you can try it for a while if you want. And it won't cost you a kidney, in fact, it won't cost you anything. You can get the file for free and I would be happy if I helped at least 10% of you. Of course, don't hesitate to give me your feedback, I'm interested.
At the moment the track stops, the tinnitus will be paradoxically stronger because the ear was stimulated and when the music stops, the first thing that you’re going to ask yourself is « is it gone? », but nope, it doesn’t work this way I’m afraid. The regularity is the key and unless you do it twice a day for two months, you won’t notice any real change.

Nice just about the right frequency for my tinnitus.
I have suffered with it for years and as I get older it just gets more annoying. The constant ringing can at times be overwhelming. There are certain frequencies that is just can’t here. It interferes with my hearing but my hearing isn’t that great either.
It would nice to sit in the woods and hear the sounds without my ever present ring.
Great job I love it. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

@@dpalaoro hi! As explained in the description, you have to teach your brain to “forget” the tinnitus or at the very least to focus on something else. The whole mindfulness program (there are many of them) are all about creating an atmosphere that will make you think about something else. So, to train your brain, you have to listen to this track (or any other track that works for you) twice a day through headphones during several weeks.

And I am surprised to read so many comments from musician friends who also suffer from the same thing, so catches my attention and makes me wonder if sensitive and high-quality ears like those of good musicians are perhaps more prone to these conditions... be? 🤔
Beyond that, I loved your way of coping with your tinnitus with such beautiful sounds that you have composed in this wonderful musical work! Perhaps it will help many more to alleviate this illness, but I am sure that this music also relieves ailments of the soul and heart! A pleasure to listen to your music, as usual!❤

I'm also a tinnitus owner! But it's not too bad in my case and it doesn't affect my quality of life much. It's more apparent of course when there is silence or when I'm trying to sleep but I learned to live with it. It's part of me now and I think these sounds were there all along but usually your brain would filter them out. Like you also don't hear your heart beating 24/7 or your blood pumping - but in some moments you do. Thinking of my tinnitus as a broken audio filter in my brain somehow made it more bearable for me.
This track is great because while listening, I don't hear any kind of extra ringing! And on top of that, it's really lovely. Love that atmosphere, it's not too dark but also has some interesting elements. Would have been a great fit on Jon Hopkins' "Music For Psychedelic Therapy " :D

Really unique idea. I sometimes have mild tinnitus that lasts for about 5 minutes then goes away. It feels like a radio wave going through my head. This is cool, kind of reminds me of riding on a spaceship going through deep space and hearing the ship's engines and other such sounds, as while there's no sound in space, there _is_ in a spaceship because it's full of air.

Life is about coping but I can imagine it can drive some mad….Sounds counter intuitive but I listen to Elaine Radigues “trans Mortem” when I’m really stressed and it’s essentially just high pitched noise that kinda sounds similar to the ringing I experience occasionally. As soon as it comes on I feel waves of stress just melt away but I can’t imagine it would be like that if it was constant.

I was trying to hear if your tinnitus matches mine somewhere on the track. At times I hear the pulsating selena string sound at a higher frequency that you are playing throughout, but mostly mine sounds like the summer time grasshoppers that vibrate their wings similar to crickets, but their sound is a long whole note if you will, followed by 6 or so pulses. The only way I can describe it in words, and you would have to know the species of grasshoppers I am referring to, similar to the sound cicadas make, but not as loud. Very interesting piece my friend. I'm sorry you are going through that as well. Certain saw wave forms and white noise, and the notch string sound especially when I am putting tracks together definitely seem to aggravate it. In many rock bands, where they perform live loud music brings it on. I guy I follow on YT, Rick Beato, had an interesting take on this with a video talking about the problem, he is a sufferer himself, he use to have his own band. It was nice checking this out indeed. Take care!
