I was under the impression that its not good to leave batteries fully charged for long periods of time. If I look at the DJI batteries on the Mini that had a problem that it would not drain after a few days the whole internet complained. They did fix that in a firmware. It would be cool if our wheels can also do this at some point where you can or set it to start draining after say 4 days or it does it automatically.
Got in my ex30 yesterday, & 1st charge got it 133.9v. Adjusted the pots on the stock charger & final charge is 134.4v. That was yesterday. Just checked V on the ex & its now at 133.4v so a ghost drop of 1v. Personally, that does not bother me nor affect usage for my purposes so long's its not a bms issue but for sure, it would be nice to always have a full charge so lets see if BG does anything
Hi Marty, I have been riding my EX30 now for a couple of weeks and also have a Master with 40T cells. The Master goes smooth at 40 mph but with the EX 30 it sometimes feels like it's rebalancing or something like it at that speed. It's really odd....like micro or nano stuttering while riding....any idea? Greetings from NZ. P.S. I bought my EX30 from Aliexpress.
I don't ride at those speeds but there are other local riders that do and their EX30's appear to be well behaved. Do you have the latest firmware loaded?
@@ElectricUnicycles I ride those speeds only if I have a clear sight and feel 99% certain that nothing pulls out on me e.g. no traffic around me. I did an update when I got the wheel...will check if there is a new update. Thanks Marty.
Hey Bro its Sam from the Electric Revolution NZ group. Does your ex30 require a new distribution board? as addressed by Marty. Im thinking of buying one? If Begode fix this issue?
the old Master pro board is hot.. the new ones are not.. so they put some diode that might be preventing to 100% fully charge and also not making the plug hot.. / live.... which might also lead into slowing draining the battery
Imagine you lived near the Hollywood sign and that's where you usually start your rides. This is my analogy for the topography where I live. If my wheel is fully charged, I have an issue with overcharging as i start my ride, which is downhill the first 5km (3 miles). Maybe this is part of the reason they limit max voltage a bit. Also, if you have to stop hard, this could be an issue, too.
Trust me, I "know" that is not the reason 🙂 For people in your situation the typical solution is not to fully charge your wheel (many chargers have a setting that allows you to charge to 90%).
@@ElectricUnicycles Yeah, I have no problem with work-arounds. :D Just something I thought maybe affected the way they think about charging every cell to 4.2V could be an issue!
I wonder how the cell balancing is working here. Each battery has it's own BMS? How it can balance if battery is not fully charged? And also how it balance the cells if the battery do not drop at all :D.
Each battery pack has its own BMS. For Begode wheels they are "dumb" BMS's. Historically the balanced occurred during the charging cycle not during passive discharging.
You mentioned fully charging it and possibly leaving it for a month or so between rides, does that also leave a higher possibility for those dreaded spontaneous combustions as well as being unhealthy for the cells to leave them fully charged for more than say, a week?
I've been leaving my wheels fully charged (sometimes for months) for 7-years now and 35+ wheels. Don't believe all the scare mongering that you see out there. What's important is to monitor the health of your batteries and don't ignore strange behavior (not being able to fully charge, etc)
@@ElectricUnicycles yeah do not belive science tests of battery cells, believe Marty :D. Tesla and others car manufacturers also do not know anything about this when recomending charging to 80% and not leaving fully charged car for longer period of time? :D
@@TheDownloader86 A $40K car perhaps requires a bit more attention. If you intend on keeping your EUC for 10-years, spend all the time and inconvenience that you want to achieve maximum battery health. My perspective is based on practicality in the EUC space. @@ElectricUnicycles Absolutely agree. There's no right or wrong here. It's just lifestyle choice as to how you prefer to manage your charging I plan to use my LI-Ion batteries for at least 10-20 years and will repurpose them after the range depletes over time, so lifetime utility is my focus.. If others plan on selling your unicycle every year or two, then there is very little cumulative damage to the cells over that time. If the next owner wants to maximize the battery lifetime, then they will get a very similar battery health when compared to a battery cell that has been pampered since new. For this reason, I don't hesitate to buy used unicycles because you can only do so much damage even if you left it. If you're a short-term owner or second/third time buyer, then charging to 100% all year is reasonable. Just don't expect your children to appreciate their inheriting an EUC with slightly lower top speed and lower range. I love other people's used batteries, they're great for making portable generators or other repurposing projects.
So Begode did in fact confirm that not charging to full was an issue? They've been saying it's a safety feature, if they've confirmed that is in fact a bug and not a feature that would be a bad look for them. But nothing new from Begode I suppose, lol.
In the case of long-term storage, the full charge of the battery negatively affects its resource. That is why Tesla does not recommend fully charging the battery of an electric car.
As I said in the video, I put the power distribution board from my Master Pro - V1 into the EX30. The old boards and hopefully the new boards do not have ghost drain.
@@ElectricUnicycles hmm ok I had the V2/C2 charge board in my Master, Begode sent me the V4/C4 board (the one that ghost drains) and I swapped it after I heard several mentions of old boards causing problems with balance between all the packs, the old board indeed did not have any ghost drain but I really didn't like the sound of getting imbalance in the packs, I have not heard/seen any newer revision of than the V4/C4 that seems to be the one shipped in all their wheels currently.
Thanks for the info Marty. I'm still worried about the suspension on the EX30 (For big guys). I didn't like the feel of the one Roger has. I did like Dawn's better but still not as much as the Commander Pro so I'm actually thinking of going that route instead. What do you think?
I didn't know Roger has the EX30. Maybe it's mine since it was at Vegas that weekend? You really have to go with your gut and the Commander Pro certain rides nice and it never feels like it wants to bottom out.

Personally, I’ll never “store” a wheel at 100% s.o.c. (state of charge) for more than an hour or two… not even overnight! This is not a fire issue so much as a dendritic crystal growth near the anode side of individual cells. Over the long term, this causes individual cells to have lower Vmax potential and exacerbates cell balancing problems… it’s a cascade failure risk that moves about as fast a prostate cancer so mostly it goes unnoticed.
