Hey... don’t you have vents on the SIDE of the A/C unit? By closing them off you may drastically reduce your cooling. Air doesn’t go thru the A/C from outside to inside, you have an outside circulation (and a big chunk of your “outside window” is now set inside & blocked off) and an inside circulation (cool too
air gets cooler). Correct me if I’m not seeing something right...

I’m new to this channel, and had a quick question about the hard side conversion. How is the new buddy attached to the floor body? Is it just screwed into the drip edges or is it bolted down to the base?

Coming along nice. There’s always something going on. I’m definitely going to be keeping an eye out for the video on that roof. That’s the thing I gotta see. Good job 👍

I don't want to burst your bubble about solar but it may not go your way. If you have a small 5000 btu window unit it will pull about 475 watts continuously while running. It will also pull about 1200 to 1500 watts at startup. You will need to have a 2000 watt power inverter to get the unit to turn over and you will have to have batteries that can source 100 to 150 amps. Next there is the matter of the inverter running at about 85% efficiency and your solar would best be served by an MPPT controller which is about 90% efficient. This drives up your steady state solar needs to around 600 watts which can be generated by about 5 square meters of solar. That would be the entire roof of your trailer when the sun is shining straight on the panels.
However, you still have the 8 hours of summer night and perhaps a 50% duty cycle on the AC. You are going to need to draw 200 amp hours from the batteries during the night when your solar isn't running and then hope to catch up the next day while solar is both cooling and charging the house bank.
Of course running your AC with solar is within the realm of possibilities. You should keep realistic expectations and do some tests along the way so that you don't under size your installation.
Of course you really don't need AC if you have a trailer. Just go to the Finger Lakes in Summer and Gulf Shores during the Winter.

Excellent breakdown. Thanks. I've tinkered with solar and solar controllers but not on a larger scale like this would require. I've seen some set ups where small new/modern a/c units in this size pull around 350 to 375 watts while running, but the start up surge is definitely far higher. Anyhow, solar is pretty far off for the time being. Thanks again for your detailed explanation.

@@drez20001 I'm planning on doing something exactly like this, and I actually have an almost identical camper. I was just going to use a generator or sure power for the AC.

@@mt1990sweg Awesome. Do share your pictures of the build. There aren't many videos online on this modification. Best of luck.

drez20001 I haven’t even started yet but I certainly will when I do. I’ve got some rotting issues and canvas tears in mine as well. It’s a 1983. I’m hoping to get started this fall hopefully and was hoping I could message you with some basic questions when the times comes.

It is probably too late, but the problem with those window coolers is the angle that they set at has to slope down towards the outside, or you will flood the inside. Have you seen one of these: www.amazon.com/dp/B08677DCKN

So I have a question. Have you pulled it at all and the top heaviness of the camper makes me wonder if it will tip over easily looks awesome tho

You need to make your box around the ac a little bigger and cut a vent in the floor on each side of the ac and put heavy screen over those holes to keep bugs out. The condenser exit needs to be sealed off so the side entrance vents don't draw that hot air back through.

I'm following you intensely on this project. I have a popup I bought for 250 with bad canvas. and have been thinking about doing the same thing with it. Your videos are great. I am going to follow them on this. Wish I had a cd of them.

I tried that method with an 12 k btu ac in my camper and it didn’t work . The fan will pull the same hot air that comes out and i will stop blowing cold air inside in a few minutes

Thank you so much for these videos. They are great! fun project I'm trying out on a used camper i got cheap. I'm wondering though, are you not planning to use propane? if so where did you move the tanks to?

Thanks for your comments. I don't plan on using propane, this will be fully electric 12 volt stuff. For cooking I'll use a small portable table burner.
