    what impressed me seriously with this build as opposed to all the others I have watched is that you didn’t have 79 million power tools a huge garage with every possible convenient accessory needed to build this little beauty.
    it is so rare to see a person do something like this on RUclips. That doesn’t have every imaginable power tool available.
    just a simple guy (said with deep respect) making do with brains and adaptabilities.
    thank you so much for a video that shows the average person can do this with the average amount of household tools. 👍🏻

    • @Jeep-Creep
      @Jeep-Creep  9 месяцев назад +18

      Thank you for that very correct observation. I am just one guy, minimal tools, minimal budget, minimal experience. If you stick at something anyone can do this. I am helping others get into camper conversions because I love this hobby so much now. It’s very wasteful what happens to older campers that all can have a second life and probably a longer second life. I actually had an RV shop that did my bearings say, these home built campers like your are actually better built and more durable than when it was new. Lots of them have leaking issues within a few years. Rodents get inside too because they are not sealed. All very true statements. I used to have a mouse problem until I improved the insulation. If you like this build I do other projects as well. I am also still adding to my camper. Thank you for the comment and if you haven’t already, please subscribe.

      Yes very realistic build. Damn thing looks great and it works. Thank you for sharing it. I'm wanting to do a 18-20 foot drop ramp cargo trailer conversion so I can take my dirt bike out. @@hoffmanshaven I ride as well got a quad and dirt bike. I was trying to figure out an easy way to haul it. My thought is exactly as your idea. 18’ trailer. The end a ramp and open. Then build a box camper in the front. When the bike isn’t on back it can serve as a deck for offgrid camping and riding. If you start a build hopefully you share it with me. I would love to see what you come up with. I really want to build a bigger camper now. I loved doing this one so much. I really want to do a shower inside. Anyways stay tuned more updates coming. My mom used to have a camper just like that. We went on a 10-day camping trip. On about day 8, it rained heavy one night, and because it was an older camper, the rain puddle in the canvas over my bed. The rotting thread gave way, and I ended up under a waterfall of cold water. Luckily, a friend had room for me to sleep in their house for the last couple of nights of the event we were at. So it was good to see that you couldn't save the canvas, I would never have a trailer with canvas pull outs after what happened to me. Just a suggestion, in the recess under your Murphy bed, build a fold down table, and/or a book rack, maybe both.

    • @Jeep-Creep
      @Jeep-Creep  9 месяцев назад +3

      Oh no! That’s awful! I couldn’t imagine how cold that must have been. I’ve had many days tent camping in the rain storms, blizzards, with tent failures so I know how that must of felt. Having a hardside camper that is cozy is so nice for me. That is a great idea with the fold out table under the Murphy bed. I will work on a design. I also really like the bookshelf idea to keep some books I travel with in. Maybe above the Murphy bed what do you think? Anyways thank you for the story and please subscribe if you haven’t already. I am glad I brought back some happy memories! I think some people grew up handy and others grew up something else... For example I have zero interest in sports and I am not good at any of them, which is typically a men thing. Also societal norms are changing a bit, I know a lot of women from my Wife's Jeep club, that are very into off-roading. Girls never did this when I grew up. Do I think the majority of men over women are more into tools and construction, yes... but it's not a definitive thing, its just the majority or norm. Also being a Craftsmen and knowing the things I do is a hobby I have had for 30 years or so, that I learned little by little. The trick is to just do it, do not fear failure or reticule. Honestly anyone can learn this stuff if they have a little fortitude and keep at it. Really liked this build out. I'm surprised you didn't insulate before adding everything.

    • @Jeep-Creep
      @Jeep-Creep  9 месяцев назад +1

      Insulation I think is a bit over rated and a big expense and takes up another 18" of width on both the length and width of the inside of the camper. So what I did, and its a great proof of concept, is just seal this up as air tight as possible. So it maintains a good interior pressure. The roof is insulated with foam and tar, sealed on the top with rubber coating. So the sun beating down on it does not heat the camper in the summer. As for cooling I only needed my A/C on one trip but the outside temps were in the high 90s with high humidity, no insulation is going to save you on that one. Normal summer days open the windows with a cross breeze stays cool. In the winter months, I have camped in 20f temps and I can use 3 heat sources that all keep it warm enough for me, around 68f. I have a little wall plug heater, (also keeps floor warm), I have an electric fireplace keeps it really toasty, like 70f... and then for off-grid or extreme cold like sub-zero temps the Chinese Diesel heater is super warm, it easily will cook me out even in sub-zero temps like talking 80f inside, too warm for me! So insulation is really overkill, even if I wasn't heating the camper at all, 4 sealed walls and a sleeping bag works even in sub-zero temps. If I were to build something that I stay in for weeks at a time I would insulate better to slightly cut down heating energy usage. The Chinese Diesel heater uses next to no electricity and a full tank of fuel I think lasts jeez maybe 4-5 days depending on usage. Also the wood is 3/4" thick, thats pretty good on its own. A larger cabin would be something to consider to insulate, but if you are wood heating, again, it gets too hot usually. Please Subscribe if you haven't already. Thank you!

    Excellent craftsmanship. I would have painted the door that wonderful green color to tie it all together and maybe a green stripe around the underside of the canopy too. Or even alternate black and green decals around it so there isn't such a contrast between the gray and green. Other than that, you did a great job !!

    • @Jeep-Creep
      @Jeep-Creep  9 месяцев назад +1

      I love your ideas! I have been looking at the door and not liking the bottom color for sure. I was going to paint it with the Gelcoat in that light brown color no matter what bc it is so durable of a paint. I was thinking if I hated it I would just paint over it. I am glad I got someone saying I should bc now I will. So you are thinking also a stripe under the canopy that is green? I am liking that idea as well. I am not sure about what you mean by multiple stripes between the gray and green. Do you mean just stripes between the top and light brown, and light brown and green section? That sounds like an idea as well... The brown stripe I think is very cool. I love the fire engine red coleman decal on the back, I was thinking maybe a red stripe, or even a white stripe? What do you think?

    • @Tammi333
      @Tammi333 9 месяцев назад +2

      @@Jeep-Creep Yes a green stripe (not multiple) under the canopy. I was also thinking, because you have that awesome bear decal on the back that maybe you could find small animal decals in two different colors (or just one) and alternate them, meaning place one decal in one color and then the next decal next to it in another color, spacing them apart and do this around the underside of the canopy. Simple but yet a stand out for sure. if you decide on doing just a simple stripe, paint a stripe on a piece of paper and hold it up under the canopy before you commit to any color. Better yet have someone else hold it up so you can stand back and look at it. Whatever you decide I'm sure it will look great !!

      Honestly anyone can learn this. The one thing to keep in mind is, can't get much worse. I took my time and slowly worked on this for about a year, I used it too before finalizing it to see what I think camping comforts I might need... It's hard to plan for everything, so I left it customizable to my needs as I went. I am helping a couple of my Subscribers as well do their campers. I can give you all the help you want. I can even draw plans in 3d CAD to help visualize your goal. Maybe one day you will get another one for free.... They are a lot of fun to build and very addictive building, its all I thought about for a year straight... I still think of add-ons... Please Subscribe and check out my newest updates.

I like trying to keep it lower weight, just because it saves on MPG. People that build these from scratch and usually spent $5,000-$6,000 and while that's not bad, I did mine soooo much cheaper, and it is just as durable, lightweight, with all the creature comforts. • @Jeep-Creep
      @Jeep-Creep  7 месяцев назад

      You could do better for sure. Many people get hung up on insulation. Believe me it is not required. Unless you live in Texas or Alaska. I have a Chinese Diesel heater which gets plenty hot even in sub zero camping. Uses barely and power or diesel fuel to run. The window AC gets plenty cold even on 100f camping. I added solar 100w panel in later video as well as a fridge/freezer. Check out the link below to see that. I’m still working on a poop box. Let me know if you got some ideas. I also want you to add a shower as well that I got some ideas for. There are a lot of people online I like to talk to about their ideas and what works. One of my main goals was cost which is pretty minimal. Next main goal was compact as possible. Yeah teardrops are better but I wanted a standing trailer with cooking inside as well. PLEASE SUBSCRIBE. Wow, great job. I wish i had your help right now with my project. I purchased a 1990 winnebago warrior 21ft class c motorhome and my husband and i were going to gut it and renovate it together to travel in. Well, a year ago he ran off and i was left to pick up the pieces and had to move out of our apartment. I relied on him for so much as im disabled and physical labor can be difficult. I'm living in the half renovated rv and have had problems getting help to finish it. Im motivated and ready to finish it, but finding someone to help with what i can afford to pay has been difficult. I have land to offer temporary hookups for someone who might want to stay and visit the New Orleans area if they are interested in helping me. Ive spent everything that i have saved for the project on the new roof and front overcab. And unfortunately, i paid someone to do some work and now im having issues with my clearance lights not working. Cant drive it until thats figured out.
    Anyway, sorry for a long winded comment. Thank you for the great inspiration with your amazing build!

      I am very sorry to hear about your unfortunate events. 21ft class c nice size rig! I years ago wanted to get one in hopes my wife and I would tour the Grand Canyon. It’s difficult to do builds by yourself. Trust me I do them all by myself. Not fun and it takes a whole day sometime to do something simple. It’s hard finding good help, with RVs you are talking about fiberglass or aluminum fab work it’s not easy to do right. Fortunately clearance lights shouldn’t be hard to fix. Probably a bad ground or cut wire / fuse. If I can offer any advice let me know. I relied a lot on forums for things I haven’t done before for advice. How is the weather in New Orleans? this is something i thought about doing with my old pop-up but with a bit of a different design for the bed area, i was going to have a slide-out bed on one end to give more room inside the camper, build it basically the same way as you except on the back end have a bed area that slides out the same as it was designed to in the first place but with solid sides kinda like a box that slides out and you put the same support bars underneath when it's out, the side walls would be solid and the end as well with a small window, a hinged panel that closes the camper off while diving that flips up to slide the bed end out and latches down as a roof for the bed end. just a thought, one thing though, how does it tow going down the road? does the wind hold it back a lot?

    • @Jeep-Creep
      @Jeep-Creep  9 месяцев назад +2

      This is a great design idea you have and I considered it as well. You totally could have a hardside slide out with a door that closes with travel. Just be careful with the weight. I don’t know what your camper is rated for. Look up axle diameter and capacity. Second you need to obviously make sure there is room to slide into. Third keep in mind these are not very wide. I have barely enough room to fit a twin size mattress in long ways. I only have maybe 2” on top and bottom of bed from the walls. 75” is tight. That being said I would consider making the slide out of something much lighter and stronger than wood. Either fiberglass or steel. Use thin sheet steel and angle iron. Let me know if you keep at this idea. No one on RUclips to my knowledge has pulled this off. Only a couple people tried and failed.

    • @davidwalesby2426
      @davidwalesby2426 9 месяцев назад +3

      @@Jeep-Creep i was gonna eliminate the roof and use just the sheets of 3/4" plywood down the side with 2x2 an 1/4" plywood on the roof an ends to compensate for the weight, one slideout on the tongue end, the interior is decent so i would leave it the same which is already designed to slide the end in at its lowest point with better slides. i kinda gave up on it but your video has inspired me. i think i might just try it in spring.

    • @Jeep-Creep
      @Jeep-Creep  9 месяцев назад +1

      @@davidwalesby2426 Something I use a lot for trying ideas is drawing it in CAD. I use a free one online called SketchUp. Try it out it took me only about a day or two to get the hang of it. It’s not as pro as the big boys but it’s more than enough to get designs figured out. Plus it will help you figure stuff out before you start. Let me know if there is anything I can help you with. I really want to see someone do a good, working slide out hardside. If it gives you more inspiration look up Apache Popup campers made in the 70s. These were hardside popups. They fold out their ends. Not a bad design. Also keep in mind what you want to use this for. If cold weather camping is on the list you will have a great challenge making it air tight. If not then it’s easier by far. Because the air gaps in slides are hard to get air tight. Also again with the weight. Look for a axle rated high capacity when shopping. It’s figured out by diameter. 1.5” 1000lbs, 1.75” 2000lbs, 2.375” 3500lbs, 3” 6000lbs. If you are doing a small 6x6 like mine with all that wood. I would go with a 3500lbs or better axle. Make sure the tires can handle it too. My trailer weights already 1660lbs and is probably closer to 2000lbs now loaded.

      Good idea but I wonder with all the wood vs what was initially on popup - will the Axel handle the additional weight I had a pop-up and the tires going down the road made the bottom further out due to weight.

    The only thing that i can honestly say i didn't like is the fact it has no insulation and inner walls, will lose a lot of heat/cold like that and it will create moisture/sweating issues. Also the diesel heater could've been installed a little bit further out to allow for better air for. Other than that it looks really nice

    • @Jeep-Creep

      Thank you for the sub! Michigan is a beautiful state it's hard to find an area that isn't nice. That being said I would highly recommend any campground on the water. Middle of Michigan and higher is beautiful. All of the Great Lakes campgrounds are pretty nice. I think Michigan's upper west side is probably the most beauty geo-graphically, you get more rolling hills. I just stayed at the North Higgins lake campground this summer and I like that lake a TON. It is crystal clear water, with a huge sandy shelf that goes out into the lake probably 200-300 yards. It's a fantastic water sports lake. We have 1000s of rivers as well, its hard to pick a bad one. I do highly recommend the Au Sable River. It dumps into small lakes along the way. It has high cliffs in parts that you swear you were in a mountainous state. It stretches all the way across Michigan and dumps into Lake Huron. Along the river you can disperse camp, I think in a lot of spots for free as well. On the upper west side I highly recommend Interlochen campground, and put in on Platte Lake, follow the Platte River all the way into Lake Michigan. It is a sandy lake/river trip, warm water, until Lake Huron, and when it exits into Lake Huron, you will be on the Largest Sand Dunes I think in any fresh water lake. On the Sleeping Bear Dunes, you swear you were in the middle of the desert the sand dunes are so high and massive. It is one of the most popular off road parks in the United States, people come from all over to visit them. I highly recommend visiting the Sleeping Bears Dunes Park as well, lots of family activities and they rent a pretty wide assortment of off road vehicles. The ONLY thing I cannot stress enough, BOOK NOW for the summer, it fills up FAST! Checking the DNR Website for campground rentals it works quite well. midnrreservations.com Let me know how your travels go. I am always interested in swapping stories. I have never been to Nebraska, any recommendations? I am hoping to see more of the US with my newly built camper. Also stay tuned, I think I have done a couple updates to my camper since that video... I got my water system figured out for example.

Many other camper builders do not factor cost in at all. Most will just strip down to the frame, restore the frame and then build up off of that. While that may sound like more work, its actually far less work. Restoration is always far more time consuming, you save money a ton too if you repurpose things that are not in bad shape. I wouldn't mind doing one from scratch but I am not looking at spending close to $5,000 yet. If I ever get popular on RUclips maybe one day.

    might want to rethink that diesel heater fill location... if you spill... you will have diesel behind your wall... and that smell will suck.

    • @Jeep-Creep
      @Jeep-Creep  6 месяцев назад +1

      You are absolutely right! So what I didn't show in the video that resolves that issue, is I filled in the cavity fill area with foam, so if it does spill it stays in that area by the nozzle. • @Jeep-Creep
      @Jeep-Creep  8 месяцев назад +1

      It’s a popular question I get and many are rightfully so to ask. Yes it’s shaped like a box. However. I am towing with a Tahoe and it’s not much taller than it. Also the top is not square but angled. It actually tows extremely smooth and straight. It doesn’t sway or bounce or anything bad. I’ve towed lots of trailers and this one tows just as good as any new trailer I’ve ever towed. My fuel economy too does not change dramatically. I like to tow at 65mph I loose maybe 5 mpg. At 60mph I loose nothing. At 70mph tows well, I’ve pulled at 80mph still tows well. Fuel economy goes down to about 12mpg. It weighs 1,660lbs loaded. The only improvement to the frame was I had the axle cleaned up, new bearings, new tires, suspension cleaned and inspected. My buddy has a similar vehicle towing a 14’ popup not hard-side and mine tows smoother. Just because it looks like a brick doesn’t mean it handles like one. Please Subscribe
