Upgrading Speakers with 10” Scan-Speak woofers

This is a sound demo of the first speakers I made to order from Rene from Singapore.
I want to thank him for his trust and patience because it took way more time to handcraft the speakers than was expected. They are not completed so far but I do want to share the process.

This is an upgraded version of the MODULAR ONE speakers. The 8" SB Acoustics are replaced with 10" ScanSpeak woofers. Separated sealed box enclosures for each driver.
The speakers are made of plywood and covered with a 100% natural finish.
It is used black calligraphy ink, linseed oil, and wax.

Thanks, Yan for agreeing to make these speakers for me. We know what were the challenges with this build. I don't know of any speaker builder who would go to such lengths to modify, customize, and make everything perfect (like the final finish). Talking about going above and beyond for the customer (in my case a friend). I believe you've finally completed the build including the tweeters from your latest video ruclips.net/video/yaZ4tTUnkOM/видео.html. I can't wait to have a listen with these.

Yes, that was really challenging for both of us. Each step was like a child’s first step. But the child grown up beautiful with its own character and imperfections, but became lovely. I will miss them soon when it will be shipped to you. They are finally done, but I have to double-check it in portrait mode if there any crossover improvements needed. The final challenge will be the packaging and shipping. I will contact you soon.

@@cercelsever814 Sure. Currently it is veneered option in progress with the Hypex on the paper woofer (same model but a bit different specs). Will post some video once it is done.
Hello Yan it sounds great. Very good job !! Better choice this 10''. Did you modify the Xover ?
Hi Eugene. Thanks. The XO has some tiny modifications on each chain but mostly on the Fostex’s correction chain. The best thing is changed - there are no transit resistors on the full-range and the super-tweeter. It could be done for the previous version but I figured it out only now.
Hello Yan..No I have not forgoten... look forward to your next sound demo on these, when finalised. Are these going to replace the 8" version of will they be both available ? Also when will these be on your web site for sale ? thanks Alain
Hi Alain. Thank you. I’m tending to think that the 10” version is going to be the main and the only. Yes, It is way more expensive, but the low frequencies improvements are huge. Also, it look much better. It is even possible to choose between the drivers with anodized aluminium cone and paper cone. In the next few weeks I hope I can make many sound demos in different modes and finishes. I don’t have any free time so far to update the webpage. I will do it after both of orders are done.

That’s the first thing I noticed as well. No tweeters.
Are the Fostex midrange drivers run full-range, until they crossover to the woofers?
Hi Ken. Yes, Fostex plays 300-16000, but with very narrow directivity at the highs. The super-tweeter needs to be added to expand the directivity as well as to enlarge the listening distance. Both options has its own advantages and disadvantages, but that is the point you can set it as you want or need.
In addition want to say that the crossover is designed next:
1. If no tweeter connected - the Fostex plays clear till the end.
2. If the tweeter is connected - the Fostex is cutted a bit at about 9k and the tweeter plays 9-20k.

Играет круто, только я не понял- это по два вч на канал.
Тут окремих вч поки немає взагалі, тільки широкосмугові Fostex, які вільно грають до 16кГц.
@@bentezh А в Вас великий досвід колупання з шириками? Можете щось порадити таке, шоби грало, як AEG, але коштувало як Фостек? Мені подобається Wavecor FR085CU02, але, наче знятий з виробництва, також нот бед Tang Band W5-1880
, але теж важко дістати. Ціна до того ж така, яка не схиляє до екпериментів з підбором у пару: хочеться ще й гарантовано підібраних від виробника..
Серед вимог - лінійна фаза та відсутність сюрпризів на диаграмі направленості. Вже до KEF R3 схиляюся, але ширикам ще можу дати шанс, якщо є в природі нормальні, не для старого джазу.
PS Tang Band W8-2143 та подібні моделі звучать динамічно, більш-менш чисто, але різкувато на мої вуха.
