Hey pals, thanks for watching! Two small things:
    1) Adding a small trigger warning for disordered eating & thinspo, 6:15 - 7:01
    2) I’m doing a little Lucy Moon community census - if you’ve got five minutes, please get involved! www.surveymonkey.com/r/XJJQH7J

I filled out the survey, but really, I wish there was a way for you to just make the content that makes you happy and proud without having to cater to others while still making the money you need. Idk. Videos are more interesting when the creator's heart is in them. TL;DR You do you girl

Hey Lucy, I`m a silent subscriber for quite some years now and I want to say, that I still love your videos! Even after all those years. I only have to admit that the videos at the end of last year felt a little bit less like you in a way - more professional and sponsor oriented maybe? It felt like the typical lucy vibe has gone missing for a while, but I`m very happy to see it back! I`m very aware that everbody goes through different life phases und people change constantly, but somehow you have managed to preserve your core (at least, in the dregree you want to show us) and I`m very happy about that.

I love how honest you are with your content Lucy. It's one of the reasons I love watching your videos. I've never seen somebody explaining so elegantly all the problems that come with being a youtuber. Sometimes it feels so weird to find out that someone you admire so much doesn't see themselves the same way. I love that you address your insecurities. Also I love ur soft girl aesthetic and your thumbnails. Hope you feel creatively energised in your new home. 💜

I keep coming back to your channel for these videos. As a dude, I don't really find the makeup/fashion stuff of interest but your chats and the way you are on screen is a perfect gauge for someone doing it right on RUclips. Doing your own thing is so much more important, integrity is the most overlooked part of RUclips culture. (Y)

Something I think sets you apart from a lot of other youtubers is the content like this video, when you talk about and analyze RUclips and internet trends in general. I personally find that topic really interesting and I haven't seen too many other youtubers talk about it so honestly and openly as you. The fact that this kind of job hasn't existed for a long time, I think leaves a lot of questions about the "correct" way of handling your career as an influencer or youtuber. It's definitely very interesting to hear about the way this career works, love your chatty videos about it!

I definitely think that it's possible to make successful videos without clickbaiting. Look at Jenna Marbles or Safiya Nygaard, their videos are usually titled exactly what they are, and the thumbnails are usually not misleading in any way. I think that's one part of their success, you trust that you will get exactly what it says on the tin and not be tricked or fooled into watching something you didn't sign up for.

    • @semogecarg
      @semogecarg 5 лет назад +3

the title is exactly what is in the video, but it's still outrageous enough to draw attention. (which is something lucy talked about)

  • @cosmopolitan8

Hey Lucy! Just filled out the survey and noticed one thing: in the section where you ask the survey taker's gender, you have as options "man" and "woman", and then "trans man" and "trans woman". This may seem small, but if you can go back and edit it, you should consider making the man and woman options "cisgender man" and "cisgender woman". It seems inconsequential, but by creating categories labeled "man" and "woman" that are notably separate from "trans man" and "trans woman", you're implying that to be a trans woman or trans man is not to be, respectively, a Woman or a Man. I knew what your intent was, I just thought you might think about rewording it a bit more tactfully!

Hey Lucy! Watching this video and hearing your honesty made my Sunday morning. I know you may be feeling doubtful about your content/your place on RUclips lately but I want you to know that the space you create on here is difficult to find paralleled anywhere else. There are very few creators on here that express themselves and create content in a way that their viewers can learn from and can relate to. Instead, I find RUclips has morphed into a space where the majority of viewers watch content that depicts a lifestyle that is so far out of reach to the point where it becomes mere entertainment. I want to thank you for remaining so grounded and approachable - listening to you sort through your emotions is such a comfort because it creates such a sense of community, where we are all just trying to figure out out and keep it together! Does that make sense? Sending love from Canada

Never commented before but consistently watched the majority of videos you post for years - I would say you’re probably one of the only channels I watch this consistently? I think that’s due to how real you seem as a person so no matter if the content necessarily relates to me I still wanna watch? Just keep doing you and create the stuff you wanna create. The rest will come naturally 🌺

Lucy I totally feel your comments about tumblr specifically with thinspo, I struggled with an ED a couple years ago and still struggle with it now but tumblr was a major source of "thinspo" for me and really helped me to spiral so I understand exactly where you're coming from. I also really love how you talk about instagram and curating your feed into only things that don't negatively impact you because I definitely have friends who I love irl but their instagrams can become very triggering and difficult for me so I really agree with your thoughts that you should never feel obligated to follow anyone online

I don’t generally comment but have been watching you for ages now and really love your videos. I generally watch them when I feel down or stressed and they really help. I don’t really click on new thumbnails, just watch all of the videos of people I follow, who I generally find from collaborations or recommendations from you tubers I already watch. Judging this thumbnail objectively though, it would be perfect for me, honest, relatable and chilled, keep doing what you’re doing ❤️😊

Hi Lucy. I've been watching you for years now and have had the pleasure of meeting you one summers day on Oxford Street. I think for me, the reason I watch you is that I simply enjoy hearing about what your views on topics are, and what clothes/lifestyle you are into. For me, I feel I have a nice bubble on RUclips of content that holds no drama. I watch people such as yourself and Anna Newton and Lily Pebbles and like that your content changes just like as you get older as what you want to talk about will change too. For me, it's not a trend or clickbait titles. I just like you from what I know you to be like from what you have shared and will continue to support you in whatever content you want to create.

when I started watching youtube (waaay too late) you were one of the first I found. I’m not a daily youtube watcher.. I’m not obsessing or fangirling over any youtuber (maybe bc of my age?), but I like some good inspiration, a good chat or some feel-good-entertainment. And I find myself keep clicking on your more chatty videos. Like your “crisis” videos. it sounds bad, BUT they are so real. I love how you take us along with you on your journey, with maturity. You’ve thought things through. So naturally I clicked on this little chatty video. it’s a nice way of waking up. you’re aesthetic is appealing and you yourself are calm in a calming way. So if you need any feedback, I really enjoy your nice, chill, let’s talk, down-to-earth videos like these. Those videos are how I would describe you (but again, I was late to the youtube-game).

I didn't hear this as complaining.
You've spoken before about how people (I.E. your old neighboor) think youtubers don't do any work and that it is a very lazy job - what I heard in this video, was you explaining (not as an answer to that statement, but just as facts, just as your everyday life reality) how many factors go into being successful in this field AND how complex every situation is, for every channel, every youtuber, every kind of creative, every kind of personality.
Ugh. I love this video so much. 10/10 explaining. Thank you for enriching the internet with your thoughts and feelings. I've thought a lot about all of this, since I was 14, even though I'm not a youtuber. Thank you for vocalising it to all of us.
SO: I admire you, for continuing to march on for what you want creatively and community-wise here on this platform and for not giving up, even when it gets tricky and uncomfortable.
Hope you have a wonderful evening, Lucy

    So in regards to how your channel was at its best in 2017, I think you kind of have to look at it like this;
When you think about your close friends, you can probably remember a time where you had some really deep conversations where you shared some stuff that is really important to who you are as a person. But after you’ve had that period of sharing and getting really close, the friendship levels out. You talk about day to day stuff, but it’s comfortable and you still have that level of closeness.
I feel like I fell in love with your channel in 2017, because you opened up and I was like “woah this girls really interesting”. But I completely understand how that wasn’t sustainable. I wouldn’t expect you to constantly talk about your life in that way because it’s really draining.
But the thing is I’m still here, I’ve watched every single one of your videos. Because it’s almost like hanging out with a close friend. I tend to put your videos on when I’m getting ready in the morning because they’re familiar and comforting.
I think you put too much pressure on yourself to constantly be reaching perfection. I agree that your Paris video was one of the best you’ve made, it’s beautiful. But it’s almost nicer when those videos are more sporadic, it’s a thing to look forward to.
Basically I’m saying that you’re doing really great.
    We love you Lucy! Xx

I completely understand and agree about the whole tumblr, negative feeling thing. That's why I quickly was off of it, and regarding Instagram-- I periodically go through my following and have really thought, how does looking at this person's pictures make me feel about myself? and it it's not good, then I'll unfollow or mute their stories (because I tend to just go on IG for the stories now). and for me, I personally am always really looking forward to your GRWM and videos in general. Like every time I look for a lookbook or grwm video, I always think of yours and specifically that one Valentine's lookbook you did a few years ago and I want to find more videos like that. But I hope you're doin well, have a nice day Lucy :)

In terms of thumbnails, I personally rarely tend to look at them and I find that titles are more of what gets me to click on a video. I recently found myself being so involved in making my Instagram look aesthetic, I was obsessed! I ended up making a new private account and decided to spam post photos from my year in order with no filter, and because I didn’t have any followers and I kept it private I found that I enjoyed it more. I ended up closing my main account and moving to my private one fully, letting only my closest friends follow. It’s really helped getting over being obsessed with how things look online ❤️

yeah instagram makes everyone have the same style, every trendy coffee shop have the same interior, every tropical vacation look the same... I'm happy that I can live a life without it, but if I needed it for a job I would probably keep it as a work task rather than a spare time killer.. I'd try to re-frame it as a tool for my job. Enforcing really strict boundaries with social media is probably the closest you'll get to having a healthy relationship with it, if you have to have it in your life.

I don’t really click your videos as much as I used to. That’s mainly because I feel my tastes are changing as is your content. So videos like this don’t usually spark my immediate interest even though once I click and watch I know I’ll enjoy it as I did! (Nothing to do with your thumb nails they’re on point) It’s an odd thing when your sole income and general life is dependent on other people’s options and perceptions of you which is so sad cause it can easily become so self destructive... wow we’ve got to love when we want a creative career but you’ve got to suffer fools for the love of your craft x I love listening to your opinions and I have a really deep respect for you Lucy x Don’t suffer fools gladly

I’m a big fan of thumbnails that have a pleasing colour scheme (warm tones or cool tones being matched nicely) - not necessarily just in the photo but also with the text and doodles/drawings. Any text used that is clear/to the point/linked to the title of the video is also helpful! Not too busy or too overwhelming is also a plus. Having said that, a majority of the time I click on a video where I know the creator and I like their content. I always click on things I know I will like based on past content (like your content for example!) ps: I’m really enjoying your videos! Loving it all! X

I don't really click because of the thumbnail, I already know i'm going to love your video. And one more thing, I don't think you should feel pressured to make certain content because of how the other current fashion and beauty youtubers are making theirs. In terms of your thumbnails- at least surrounded by the other people I'm subscribed to, they tend to get lost. I think they are very aesthetic and well-composed, but their lack of contrast and white/neutral backgrounds cause them to blend in with the youtube background. I don't think you need to use clickbait but I think that increasing the amount of contrasting tones in your thumbnails could make them stand out more :) Hope this helps!

Its one of the (many) reasons I enjoy your channel, you always seem to be consistent with your content over time, it just feels REAL and honest to me and thats rare to find on this platform. Whenever I watch other vloggers it seems they let themselves get carried away by that media pressure, which may get them more subs but the content is poorer in my way of seeing things, or they end up losing their vision of their channel I guess. Lucy!! I love this for so many reasons. I love your fashion and beauty content; you're definitely the person I take the most inspiration from when trying to figure out my own style - but I have defintely been missing your Paris 168 hours video style recently. You are a wonderful videographer and seeing that style and aesthetic is really "soul-feeding" for lack of a nicer-sounding term. I'm so excited to hear you'll be doing more of that - and more intimate content of course is always lovely, like we're all hanging out in our pjs and having a chat with a mug of tea or something.

I never comment on videos, but I like your content because of its simplicity and good vibe. I usually watch your vids in the morning, because I like something that’s perfect to start the day while drinking a cup of tea. Everyone do her survey to help her with analytics! Although you should add a few options for people that don’t have social media. I’d follow you if I hadn’t deleted Instagram!

I genuinely love your fashion (especially) and beauty content. I don't follow any fashion/beauty content on Instagram at all. I just don't get anything from looking at pictures. I love the way you do your fashion videos. I don't think you need to compare yourself to mainsteam fashion bloggers/vloggers because you do your own thing really well. Although I also follow some other people who do fashion content, none of these are the big fashion vlogger channels. Those style of videos are just overdone and over commercialized to me. I also just genuinely love your style!

I really really loved this video!! It makes so much sense that you had to stop making really intimate content for a while, and looking after yourself is so important, and also really valuable to me as an audience member because it encourages me to do the same. Having said that, I have missed your more personal content as well, and I'm excited to potentially see more videos like this, if that is what you want to do, and you can find a balance that's healthy and sustainable for you!! I'm also having a bit of a life crisis at the moment in terms of what I want to do with my life, and it was reassuring to see someone who I find really creatively inspiring also figuring things out - it's nice to see that once you decide on doing one thing, that isn't what you have to do forever.
In terms of what makes me click on videos - thumbnails are important for me in terms of new creators who I don't know, but I have kind of a mental list of people (including you!) who whenever they upload I will 90% of the time immediately watch their video. I'm not sure if that's helpful to you, but thought I could at least share my experience.

Hi Lucy! I wanted to say first that I love your content, and the candid chats like this one. I have noticed, though, that I tend to become a bit more disconnected when you talk about youtube, and "influencer struggles" (for the lack of a better term). I understand this is a huge part of your life, but I would assume for a lot of us it's hard to relate to. I would love to hear more chats like this on topics like friendship, love, money... Just a thought. Lots of love!

More chatty GRWM please! You Tube was the ]started as a tiny little nerdy hobby that blew up into a performance of 'self' now that 'self' has been branded and monitised. It is finding a balance what engages you, you audience and allows you to make a living.

I don’t know if this is helpful but I was thinking about why I click on videos recently (i watch a lot less youtube than i did) and i decided it DOES have a lot to do with the thumbnail, and without fail, I always watch Jenn Im’s videos. Something about her thumbnails makes me immediately either watch the video or add it to my watch later!

Also, I think we have a lot in common, so that probably means that I am more inclined to watch your videos over other content creators! I'm from Italy and I found out about your channel when I moved to the Uk, so I don't watch as many english-speaking RUclipsrs, but I aways make sure to watch your videos :)

I think your overall aesthetic is so calming so when the thumbnails are like you looking happy and smiley and still kind of aesthetic it makes me more excited to click on your videos? But idk if I can be specific about that- I think the white brush-style lettering and doodling is nice too, adds a bit of interest Vs a standard screenshot.
Also I completely feel the news sludge of our political climate at the moment, it is SO overwhelming and you have to stay informed daily but on an emotional level I really don't want to know, it's just that duty to know what's going on because it all feels Important.
I think the content that's more about your opinions and life is interesting, and I'd love to hear you talk more about that balanced, doing-the-best-you-can attitude to trying to be ethical because people can be so binary and reductive about ethics, but I recognise that if that brings you tonnes of abuse you may not want to as much

What makes me click on a video is a) the thumbnail being aestheticaly pleasing (lighting, colour coding, etc) and
    b) the title being something concrete. I personally dont like vlogs, but im okay with a mix of chatting and something specific like grwm, routines, styling, review etc.
However it does help that i already follow you and know you can express yourself and your style is interesting, and, well, youre Brittish. That very often sells it to me (which i know is silly but it feels closer to me being from Europe than American yt-ers)
Hope this was helpful and constructive :)

I really love the way your makeup looks in this!! I think I use youtube different than the average person, I always go directly to my subs page and that's pretty much all I ever watch, besides the occasional suggested vid or if someone shares a link. The trend toward clickbait-y titles and thumbnails actually really annoys me; I find myself less likely to click on videos with emojis on the thumbnail or bold, wacky titles because I feel like I'm being manipulated/taken advantage of.

I was going through really hard time a year ago (mental health). So I quit school for a year while I was getting help and many of my friends were ?happy on socialmedia? I felt like they are living and I am not? so I delete all of my socialmedia in the end cuz I was getting better on therapy, leaving and than lookin on fb and getting worst than before going to my therapist. Everything has changed and I will never know if people when I tell them ''I don't have fb'' think "weird" or "cool" but I hope that they are not gonna judge too much. Also I kind of realized that my true friends accepted it as it is..

Being at school with Instagram was a weird one because I always saw my follower count and felt like I should be more social at school and make more friends just because that way I could get more followers. Everyone I know has a way bigger follower count that me, even people that aren’t necessarily extroverts with massive friendship groups. I think it affected the way I thought people viewed me and if I’m being honest it probably still does.

Hi, Lucy! I believe there's nothing wrong with you thumbnails, I love them and I think they show your personality and the vibe of the content you make! Actually, if I see a very over the top thumbnail I tend to not click on it (sometimes I assume the video contains clickbait if the thumbnail is "too much" and I hate that type of content). I get your frustration, but if I were you I wouldn't change anything :):)

I think a good thumbnail includes the aesthetic of the youtuber and tells us something about the video. I don't think the 'clickability' of a thumbnail should be the priority, or at least it should be so subtle that people don't realize it. But it's a very fine line. Personally, I don't like how capitalism/advertising has seeped into people's entertainment like youtube and people are turning themselves into brands (i.e. influencers). Ultimately, it destroys the intimacy and honesty that this platform was built on. I don't want the connection and enjoyment that I feel watching youtubers exploited for money (you see this with the success of people's merch companies and jake paul or whoever literally telling his viewers to buy his shit as an extreme example). I understand that this is a creative field and I want to support the creators I enjoy, but brand deals and videos that are just advertisements really feels distancing and is a constant reminder that I am being viewed as a consumer (patreon and those kinds of routes are super awesome ways to make money and avoid becoming corporate. Contrapoints built herself from the money she gets from patrons, it's possible). RUclips was a place I could escape that consumerism. Was. I know it's a really complicated topic and we can talk about how the art world works and shit but honestly I just want the old youtube back, in the sense that I felt connected to people.
