as someone who has always had her own style, the biggest advice i could give anyone is: DON'T CARE ABOUT OTHER PEOPLE'S OPINIONS. for example i've been wearing my doc martens since i was in like 7th grade and i can assure you they weren't "cool" at all in the late 2000s and i was made fun for them endlessly but i loved them and now everybody owns a pair, including the people who shamed me for them. same goes flor leather jackets, corduroy and maxi dresses, all things that are "in style" now but just 5-10 years ago nobody was wearing them. it's useful to understand trends in fashion as mere marketing, it's compmetely volatile. just stick to what feels comfy and good when you wear it!
ps. you don't have to "perform" your style every. single. day. if your style for example is more "vintage" nothing keeps you from just wearing jeans and a sweater sometimes.
So true... similar to what I've been saying.... fashion is so volatile...there was a time when mixed prints was seen as too much and now is a fashion statement.....so if you like mixed prints, wear it ! You like vintage wear it etc ...!

Doreen Marie reminds me of what my German Teacher used to say, that no one needs to feel ashamed to wear clothes from aldi or lidl, as long as you feel comfortable in it!
Zoe J that's very true! i'm just surprised because in comparison the more expensive supermarkets sell clothes that i associate with being grannyish
I’m currently wearing a men’s flannel that I bought at Aldi for 5€ and it’s so much softer and better quality than any flannel I bought that was aimed at women.
Am I the only one who didn't know Aldi sold clothes? I mean sure I've seen some random gloves and socks and pool inflatables in there, but actual jackets? Well I never.
Oh! dear Lucy... I feel so relieved that I am not the only one who is completely lost in the fashion world. I have always been quite easily influenced by the fashion trends and thinking "oh, I love this item" and when the trend goes, so does my love for that piece... thanks for sharing this piece of knowledge.
I do the inspo thing slightly differently - I google “how to style...” something I own e.g. how to style pink tee. Then I’ll scroll through the images and find outfits I like that I’d never have put together or items that look great that I don’t own but would enjoy :) got the cutest green mini skirt from doing that!
I would also add that knowing your undertone and body shape (especially your Kibbe body shape) can be incredibly useful tools if you find the outfits you want to wear don't look as good on you as they do on someone else. I had the issue where I liked very chic French styles with a bright, cool undertone even though I am very hourglass with a warm and muted undertone. The outfits I liked looked separate to me and made me look a bit sick, and they didn't photograph well (unless I edited them a lot). By knowing what my undertone and bodyshape are, I was able to incorporate those elements into my style and have my outfits suit me without avoiding the style altogether. Aly Art and Merriam Style are two channels I recommend on this front

I think for me I have just accepted I don't have a style: I'm bohemian one day, structured and business-like another, and vintage the next. Figuring that out has made shopping much less daunting!

Something I have noticed about my style is that I tend to find a brand that I like and then shop almost exclusively from them, so I now try to mix it up a bit more. I went from shopping at hollister to urban outfitters to Topshop and then & other stories.
I still own most of the clothes I bought in the past 5-6 years so I really need to clear out my wardrobe because there are a lot of things that I haven’t worn since I was fifteen.
I feel like I also have a formula for the outfits I wear on a daily basis (jeans and a knit jumper or a t-shirt) so I hope my wardrobe clear out will give me some inspiration.
This is such a useful video! I'm currently feeling pretty uninspired by my wardrobe...it's all pretty much stuff that I would've loved to wear like 1-3 years ago, but now it sort of feels a bit childish to me. So, I'm definitely going to be using these tips to help me rebuild my wardrobe with clothes I actually want to wear.
also, I just wanted to say that I really feel like you've come into your own and really found yourself and your style when it comes to the content you're making. I always enjoyed your videos, but I feel like your recent content has just been a step up even from the high level it was already at and its a joy to watch you and your channel grow! I've kinda created a capsule make up drawer! Which makes my boots voucher from a family friend hard normally would buy make up but now no need. took me 6 weeks to spend on posh make up brushes (yes old set a good 15 years old)! And and 3 nail varnishes (replacing 3 either spent or wrong colours for me!

Thank you so much for this video. I've always been lost with my style. I know I have a sense of style, because I'm pretty good at styling other people, it's just that when it comes to me I always just go for what's comfy and what I don't feel super insecure in (black jeans and flannel shirts). "I love that, but I could never wear it myself" is probably one of my most used phrases. Maybe this will inspire me to actually put some effort into this style thing. I'm definitely starting a pinterest board though, that's the the least I can do.
wow didn't expect to relate so much to what you said about losing your sense of personal style at uni. I'm the same age as you and have been feeling exactly the same. I also think not having much money to buy investment pieces or time to think about my style and outfits had a big impact. Only just starting to find my feet again with style and its been a while now!

I'm personally going through a style journey. I've already got rid of a lot of stuff that is obsolete, really dingy fast fashion items (i.e forever 21 knitwear is cheaper than it appears to be). there's more to get rid of but I need proper substitutes that fit my color palate (neutrals including browns and some burgundy) before i get rid of them. It's hard and will require time but it'll def pay off when you have pieces that won't pill in the first wash and pieces that will hold up better in the long run. Thank you Lucy for the inspiration, it's really helped me!!

I have real trouble differentiating clothes and styles that I admire (outfits and concepts that I find interesting) VS my OWN personal style.
For instance, I often wear bold colours, patterned socks and yellow jumpers and all that, a thrifty "artsy" look. But than I'll be into minimalistic styles with simple cuts and designs. So I doubt what my personal style actually is. If I've actually got one at all. Is what I call "my style" really just habit and a process of familiarity?
Maybe the answer is mixing multiple styles.. or maybe I just don't have the answer yet.

yessss i've always been able to identify on other people or imagine in my head what things I like/are my style but there's never been a time in my life when I felt like i *owned* my style. always felt frustrated in feeling like i can't express myself because i can't find/afford the right clothes that were what i wanted. in school my "style" just followed the trend of what other people of my gender wore, but since going to uni where you don't wear a uniform it felt much more free. is there a difference between 'my style' and just what I 'like'?? I find myself liking very very different things to what I used to like in school but does that mean my style has changed or just my tastes...

This inspired me to rethink my personal style as well! Although I'm taking a different approach (kinda).
First, I think about what I want to express and how I want to feel when wearing my clothes.
Second, what are things that I need to keep in mind when making an outfit? (E.g I have a large chest, so I need to make sure that I don't wear low cut shirts).
Third what outfits do I already own that fit the first two points? What is the thing that makes that specific outfit work and how can I use that in other outfits?

Lol nothing wrong with jeans and a t-shirt 😂 I have 3 black v neck t-shirts that I rotate with 2 pairs of jeans and converse and some jumpers - really boring but since I’m at work all week I wear fairly boring smart stuff and loooove being in jeans at the weekend!

if you are someone doesn’t express their true self often, use style to free you instead of limit you. be comfortable, but a good amount of uncomfortable so that you may free yourself more and more everyday.
Does anyone have advice for doing this when most high street shops don’t have (or have very little) in your size? For me this means petite - I can rarely get away with clothes that aren’t petite, but it can also mean tall and larger/smaller sizes. I guess there’s buying online (and even then I don’t know how much is out there!?) but that feels a lot more risky and more hassle when you can’t try things on or see how they fit your frame and have to send things back. Basically, what to do when your choices are highly restricted by size?
Sam asos has a section specifically for petite people so i guess it’s not much of a risk there.
itsflowerside The only thing I know about ASOS is that the cool kids my age seem to buy a lot from there. What makes it not risky?
I'm very tall (6'3") so ASOS is basically the only place I can shop (or I stalk Depop for ASOS tall brand, more specifically... Trying to be ethical whoop). I can usually trust ASOS to be true to size etc.
asos also has this thing where you put i your size and weight and they recommend which size to get. got my jeans size right the first time, im tiny as well!
@@lisiledbetter8220 it's such a good idea but doesn't work well if you have low body fat/high muscle ratio. Just a warning for anyone. Because it goes on weight, which if you have more muscle could be deceptively high. It always advises me a size 12, when I'm 100% a size 10. 😳
I'm my own worst enemy in general because I'm crazily indecisive & easily influenced 💔 One day I want to look Parisian chic, the next day I want to look like Alex Turner etc etc 😂 It doesn't lend a hand to my bank account at all but I just can't stand being stuck to a single style so sadly I can't even pin point my style in the end.

I don't think that people "fighting about some cause" are doing it out of "excessive levels of guilt" (maybe it's 'passion' for instance, or 'compassion', or different motivators) , this logic sounds kinda like some 'safe space' to help you (or anyone) find an excuse over not being involved in 'important' issues. No intention to offend you personally, I just don't agree totally with you. Also, the idea of style/fashion etc iz very nice and yes important i guess to many of us having our "personalities" formed through it, but there is more to our personality than the outside looks. .
