I know I already posted a cover of Hemispheres and don't worry, I have no plans to rerecord and upload my whole catalog of Rush covers in HD; I wouldn't do that to you...or myself. Two years ago, when I posted my previous cover of this song, the maximum video length RUclips would allow was 10 minutes, which meant I had to break it into two sections - "Prelude" and "The Rest Of It". For some reason, when I posted "The Rest Of It", the audio and video grew more and more out of sync the further along into the song you got. This was the only video of mine that had such issues and has always bothered me.
Also, I've been wanting to record a Rush song through GarageBand as I've been doing on some of my other covers for the past 2 months or so. And finally, I wanted to see if I was up for the challenge of playing a 15 minute piece with no catastrophic blunders.
This might just be one of my favorite Rush songs to play. I can't think of another piece of rock music that journeys through such varied and distinct moods. And, to this day, when I play it, the 15 minutes seem to pass like just a few moments. Видеоклипы
I started playing bass when i was 14, played until i was 23,,,,then marraige and all that chit happens....anyway got out of it! today i find myself married again, only to my highschool sweetheart! She loves it when i play (and yes never sold my bass). for my birthday she bought me new strings and your videos have inspired me too play again at 52. thanks dude!
If there was an option for loving this comment rather than just liking it, I would gladly press that button :)
Thanks for watching the whole piece, I think it's one of his finest bass lines. One of many. Enjoy the show and thanks.
We all think this is geddy's finest bassline. Complex at times and it in the pocket banging rock n roll other times but always tightly locked with Neil.
Ok that was an impressive and enjoyable 15 minutes. But can you drive and play Geddy Lee air bass guitar at the time? 😃
You are absolutely right TJ, it is not only Geddy's finest creation, but one that I have always longed to play on bass myself. Thanks for the attention, care and expertise afforded to even attempt to play this track....😁
The fact that Geddy can play this and sing it is pretty fucking crazy tbh...
10/10 cover by the way
Yep. Thanks.
@@TJH3113 Ever sing brother?
@@freemandiaz5123 I don't really like to sing, but I've dabbled a bit. I'm more of a decent mimic than a good singer. Check out my "Collaborations" playlist for an example.
@@TJH3113 Thanks! I'll check it out!
That is why he is the best and don't let anyone tell you else
Only Rush can tell a story about Greek gods and still make it a rock masterpiece
Truth.
The bass guitar is such an underrated instrument. You make me want to pick one up.
I think you should.
It isn't underrated here... :)
You are totally right.
Then do it haha
So good, at a loss for words. This song means so much to me, and to see someone nail it so perfectly brings tears to my once young eyes.
+skumotube Thanks a lot.
TJH3113 what key is this song in?
E Major
Cameron Jackson. Thank you doo much, but out of curiosity are you sure?
It shifts keys a bunch of times so it depends what part of the song you're in.
This is almost better than listening to the album, my brother, as the bass is even more up front and you nailed it.
Thanks a lot.
@@TJH3113 just awsome
10:40 to 12:00 is one of my all time favorite bass passages.
Mine too!
Great passage 👍
I fast forwarded to that , so I could listen along. Great choice.
Geez, sing in 4/4 time while playing that...😲😲😲, crazy..
Mine too. And Troy nails it here.
My fiance had a stroke 2 yrs ago ...u brought him him back to his musical appreciation 4music....thank you ❤ he loves listening to you...
Wow, I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope he's doing better and getting stronger. Tell him I send my very best regards... to you as well.
I just bought a bass yesterday because OF YOU. You own me 530$ buddy XD
Send me the bill. Congratulations, I hope you enjoy it.
TJH3113 get the action set low so it doesn't hurt your hands and you don't struggle playing
Seeing Rush broken down like this..makes you realize awesome Geddy REALLY is..(gotta factor in the vocals & keyboards too!!) But sheesh, the fact you can duplicate his bass note for note so effortlessly..sheesh,man..just amazing!!! enjoy your videos!
I honestly prefer watching your covers than just listening to Rush except if I'm on my bike.
That's interesting. Thanks.
That first guitar solo always gives me the chills dude!
Me too!
7:38 is one of my all time favorite bass fills.
Jonathan Sefcik Mine too. Geddy Lee is a true master in making great bass lines. So is Chris Squire R.I.P.
Jonathan Sefcik i thought i was the only one! i cant get over how amazing of a fit it is into the song
Incredible job! In 1978, at the age of 16 studied this in my my bedroom using a cassette tape recorder. It took me 2 months straight to get it. But back then, I knew the magnificence of Rush, and the creativity they put into their music.
Thanks. Same here.
1:48, one of my favourite bass lines🙌🏻🙌🏻
That is a great part, isn’t it?
Back in 1977-79 I was addicted to Rush.....After seeing your video covers, my addiction appears to be returning. A delicious addiction:)
Cool.
Thank you for the high praise. And to think, Geddy was crafting this stuff in his mid-twenties.
Someone said it earlier, but the basspart between 10.57 en 11.38 indeed is f. great! Things like that set Geddy Lee apart from all those other fantastic bassplayers on this planet. I can listen to it over and over again.
Agreed.
It was me, and you are of course quite right.
Thks for the quote..yes Geddy uses the F a lot , particularly on those old recordings...Now I thinks he plays much A in his new stuff.(scales I mean)
Thks because you help me that I´m not getting mad about my ear listening!!
This is like listening to the original with the bass way more prominent. I wouldn't know a difference between this and Geddy Lee's playing, man.
Former bassist of approx 12 years, switched to singing after I busted my arm up in a football injury. I think I need to buy another bass and start up again. I miss this sh!t. Great stuff TJ!
Do it!
I don't really remember how long it took to learn but, knowing me, probably the better part of a summer vacation from high school. I am self-taught and learned to play by ear.
the change at 6:30 really shows highlights the way (in a trio) the rhythm section has to step up during a lead guitar solo. Eric Clapton is quoted as saying "playing in a trio is the hardest thing i ever had to do".
you are incredible, this is a testament to your ability, wow
Thanks a lot.
As a drummer I am loving your playing. Drummers love this shit
Very cool. Thanks.
IMO the finest bass cover on the web, all aspect considered.
Tim Starace is equally amazing.
There are two reasons why Geddy Lee is the greatest basist in rock: playing the bass, and his style of bass lines. Many people recognize Geddy's greatness when playing the bass. However, they tend to look past the fact that Geddy also wrote the bass lines. If a song has a lousy bass line, Geddy really can't play it any better because one cannot take crap and make it sound great, which could be a problem for a bassist if he replaces another bassist in a band, and he is forced to stick to the original bass styles of its music. In other words, what makes Geddy great is that he can take a song like Hemispheres and make the bass line extremely detailed and complex. That's what makes certain bass players great!
Very well said!
Thanks a lot for letting me know that you find my videos helpful. No, regrettably I've never been considered a "pro".
Superb performance Troy. You have brilliant articulation and great 'chops.' It is an inspiration watching you play bass!
Thank you very much.
I am so happy to be born in the age of RUclips where not only can I listen to the remnants of the musical gods but I can see people like you from across the world to help convey what maybe it was once like. Thanks. And brilliant. Been playing for a year and just got a 4003 😎 mapleglo
Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave such a great comment. Take care Hayden!
10:41 the way that the bass line develops here from the original motiv is totally GENIUS
Truth!
The thought of singing and playing this is just insane, your rendition alone makes me think perhaps I could take up golf, outstanding as usual Troy. well done mate.
Can you imagine? Thank you Ian.
Amazing, and that's not said with any amount of exaggeration. Can't believe how well you've learned and memorized this song (and all the others on your channel), let alone how flawless this performance was. I assume it was a long time in the making to get it down as well as you have... years, perhaps? I'm so impressed. Also, I have to add: much respect to ol' Ged for writing/performing such an amazing bass part... and at only 25 years old.
In my 46 years of music monitoring this guy is Top Ten.
Seems to be a youngster too.
I have played most of these on bass and know how difficult these songs are to play.
What a great joy to both watch and listen to this player.
Congrats on a job very well done!
Thanks for the very kind words. I'm not so sure about the "youngster" thing though.
Gen. 5:27
Yer a youngster. ;-)
watching you play always elevates the awe factor of their music.
Very kind of you to say. Thanks!
7:20 - 7:23... Wow. I would almost believe you arranged these bass parts, and then showed Mr. Lee how to play them.
I bought a Fender Jazz Bass just because of you.....
+John Kerry Outstanding. Now play it for yourself. I wish you much enjoyment.
That tone is fucking spot on
Top effort mate
Thanks a lot.
Don't be sad, be glad that he/they made all this great music for us to listen to.
My favorite bass line of all time. Still learning it myself.
Very cool!
I have actually started downloading your videos just for the audio and putting them on CD...It's the Rush mix I have always wanted.....everything turned down except the bass..and you play and sound like Geddy...A compliment I would NEVER have given to anyone...I hail thee!
I just discovered your channel, and this is the first time I have ever commented on RUclips. I've been a Rush fan practically my whole life since I first heard Tom Sawyer in 1980, always been amazed by Geddy's bass and ability to sing at the same time, but to see you play it note for note, wow, just astonishing. You are am amazing player, Thank you for the channel and videos. Makes me wish that I would have stuck with it. You have some really beautiful bass guitars BTW.
Welcome aboard and thanks for making your first comment on one of my videos! There's a lot to see here, so take your time. It's never to late to pick it back up and play for your own enjoyment as I've been doing. Thanks again and take care, Glenn.
The part from 6:25 is one of the best sections in all of rock n roll and the bassline is absolutely sick. You played that and the entire song brilliantly! Truly inspiring.
Yes, it is definitely one of them, isn't it? Thanks a lot!
The bass line of this song is phenomenal and can be seen as a work of art that deserves to be appreciated. I can say that Geddy know do those "tricks" at the right time. Begins with low notes and goes down for acute ones, ending in a melody that Alex wanted to do with his the base guitar, clarifying with the bass. And it always watching the battery Neil, the bass notes always accompanied by a beat. Really, this song is one of the best of them, in the sense the guys actually studied and they put into practice.
This is what I am currently working on at present. You, sir, are a true treasure. Thank you.
I have no idea how I kept missing this one, but this is flat-out hardcore. I've been listening to the original cut for some time; I was particularly looking forward to how you were going to handle my favorite sequence in this song (10:40-11:57), and I have to say it was a bloody success. Geddy settles into such a cosmically solid groove there, and you absolutely stand shoulder to shoulder with him.
That was a real treat, Professor. Many, many thanks.
Oxnard Montalvo Thanks a lot. I love this song...album side.
My main reason for uploading it again was to get it on one video and to correct the sync issues in the other cover. Thanks a lot.
"Thumbs Up" does not even come close to my like level for this! This is off-the-charts amazing!!
Wonderful to hear. Thanks so much!
OK that's it. In my next life i am coming back as a bass player.Well done mate on another fine cover.
Said to myself: "this is the last vid. and then I'll practice my bass".
HAHAHAHA, I'm still here...
Thanks for the sharing and the wonderful ability you have that WE ALL enjoy('cept for some unknown tone deaf/jealous individuals).
Johnny P Thanks a lot. His name is Briancdn.
Indeed, the 15 minutes seem to pass like just a few moments. I sincerely forgot I was watching a cover. Great!
thank you...your videos nudge me back into picking my bass up when I'm uninterested ...
It's amazing how one can memorize all this
It's funny, I can't remember a name, a number, or a face, but I can remember songs.
I could watch Troy all day long .. incredible
Thanks Dean!
Thanks again Troy. I was just working in Delaware City De. and was thinking, man I want to jam w/him. Have a great day. Song never gets old!!! You nailed it✌👊😎
As always, it's my pleasure Don. Feel free to stop by anytime you're in the area. Take care!
Your Geddy Lee and Dee Murray stuff is my favorite. You, Sir are an amazing musician.
Thanks, that was very nice of you to say!
Man, I wrote my comment halfway, but after watching the whole thing I have to agree with BaldJohnnyRhythm, you make it look like it is a walk in the park...
Not my first time here, mindblowing bassline from Geddy and a superb interpretation by Troy. Musically deliciuos.
Many thanks!
Thank you Valerie. I'm glad that you watched it.
I'm playing through a SansAmp Bass DI pedal and I turn up the "drive" until I can just start to hear it distort, then back it off a little bit.
Evening my dear friend. Im in the same boat as Giuliano. About a month ago I stumbled across this and your "Seven Cities of Gold" covers. And I was sold. I purchased a Squire Vintage Modified Jazz Bass in a natural finish with a maple neck with black inlays. And now about 2 months later I have a 70RI Fender Jazz thats black and with a rosewood neck with pearloid inlays. Im polishing up some songs, but I should have about 5 videos up within the next few weeks. Looking forward to a good youtube friendship!
Sounds great as usual!
Awesome job again!!!
NAILED IT
LOVE IT! Glad you remade it. :D
My God, what an accomplishment to play this piece of music with such grace and effectiveness. I can understand why its one of your favorites. As for Geddy Lee, this sort of says it all.
Thanks so much. Yes, I'd been chipping away this song since the early 80's at the time I recorded this video. As you do, I also think it's a masterpiece. Yeah, Geddy threw in the kitchen sink on this one.
This Blows me Away! Your playing is So accurate to Geddy and just to memorize this!!
Thanks a lot.
Great work!
Just amazing, as are all your vids. Thank you!
Among the all time top RUclips bass performances? Thank you!
Richard Gudino Thanks.
Marvellous. . . absolutely bloody marvellous!!
That part at around 2:20 where the bass stops and just plays short, single notes is awesome. Geddy's tone is so important. Without that bright clankiness the bass wouldn't ring the way it needs to for stuff like that. No muddy bass allowed in Rush!
Yes, those notes are a nice clear example of Geddy's sound. I think it has as much to do with the clack, rattle and buzz he gets as it does the eq (highs and mids).
TJH3113 But this is better than my version! I was never good learning every note exactly as the originals songs so I started to improvise in certain passages with some good and some bad results and when recording the video I had years without playing that... And I made it with a Music Man soit's sounds very different... watch?v=LpKf6qGDV38
Nice comments it´s all about Geddy´s sound that makes a diference most on a difficult song as this is..still looking for this sound myself....
I´ll be checking your video, Christian!....Nowadays, ther´s a lot of pedals, rigs and so on..but...nailing THAT sound is a defying task still...
such a great job man
Wow...amazing job!
very well done!
awesome cover!!
Fantastic! One of my favorite RUSH tunes.
Brilliant Job
Sir, your covers are just amazing. I am just lost for words. And this is IMHO probably their best piece from their best album. Epic Cover! Flawless seamless. Geddy should def see these covers!!!!
This was great. This song is one of my favorites. Excellent
I'm going to try that, thank you!
Thanks, if I could just get my wife to call me that.
I'm glad you're getting some use out of the videos.
HOLY CRAP friggin awesome
this is great sir
That it WAY too nice!!!!
Awesome man, keep it up!
The whole song... wow. Each video is like a clinic. Thanks again Troy.
Ahhhh man I love your tone! Amazing cover...as usual.
This might be my favorite video that you have uploaded thus far. Thanks for sharing it with us!
I believe this is rush at their peak. You covered this PERFECTLY. im amazed, humbled, and inspired. Ive always wanted to learn this song, and hearing how delicate intricate this song really is... And how it literally doesn't repeat at all with all of the different phrasing... I was so intimidated and discouraged. I want to say im going to tackle this thing the old fashioned way with vinyl and headphones, but im just going to use your video to learn and enjoy the heck out of it. Bravo sir, standing ovation for this performance. And thank you for doing the dirty work!!
Imagine being at your "peak" at around 25 years old? I learned this on vinyl and I'd recommend something with a slider. You're going to develop carpal tunnel from moving that needle back. Take your time. I think it took me the better part of a summer to learn it and many more years to be able to play it somewhat fluently. Have fun and be patient!
SUPERB! THE BEST COVER I EVER SEEN!
Loving the tone as well as the playing, cheers to you mate...
So good!! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks!
Man you are fantastic!! Amazing Job! I'm already your fan. Congratulations!
Phenomenal. I love Geddy's style and you are so spot on it's amazing. It really makes me appreciate Geddy's melodic playing even more, as it sometimes gets buried in the mix.Seeing and hearing it up front and center is a real treat. Thanks!
This is just incredible on so many levels.
It really is amazing what he does. Thanks.
When I want to listen to this song I come here. This louder bass version is amazing. Great job as always TJ. And strength in the battles of life!
awesome job i think this is one of your best rush covers
Wonderfully amazing work!
Thanks.
i want to play like you! thank you for posting this!
