Every 30 yr old Toyota truck or 4runner I see on the road all have stock size tires......and still rolling! It's a small pickup.....I drive one and love it!!
Older trucks have higher ground clearance from the OEM then current gens. I had 2004 Tacoma TRD offroad and it had good ground clearance. I think that off the lot they came with 10.5 in, vs 2nd and 3rd gent that are 9.4 or 9.5
You can’t beat the look of a 285 but….I agree with you. At the last minute I recently changed my mind about the 285s because I know it would rub on my set up. Then after I was convinced on doing some trimming, I said to myself…do I really want to make my Taco more sluggish than it is? Do I really want to stress my engine and transmission and everything else? Nope I’m good. 265 70r17 is the way to go for me. It’s all about personal preference 😎👍
Yea all about personal preference as you say, and what makes you happy! 265/75s are like the perfect fit for a nice lift and daily 285s are for looking cool!
I quit considering a 275 when I couldn't find a single 275/70r17 that isn't an LT tire..... all of them weigh over 50 lbs each. I don't do any hard core offroading and like to stick with lighter tires between 40-45 lbs.
I went right in between for my 4runner. 275-70-17 Falken Wildpeak AT3W’s. It is perfect. Mine is already lifted 2 and a half inches so I could’ve fit 285’s but 275s are amazing. Little bigger than stock which is too small for my lift and looks weird and not as good off road but didn’t want the extra hit in mpg and power loss so 275s were my choice and haven’t regretted it for a second. If you don’t off road then stock size is fine.
I hear ya man and I agree. I’m on my 8th, all modded. I just ordered 265/75/16 with a 2.5” lift. Getting everything installed next week and hope I’m happy with the tire size.

2 years ago, I bought a '23 Taco SR 4cyl. I had to go the economy route and this was the best I could do. I've always been a big tire guy and I did want/need an upgrade over the AS tires that came on the truck. I ended up with a 245x75x16 (stock size) but got a fairly mild AT tire instead. Now, after 2 years I'm convinced that I did the right thing. I've taken the truck everywhere that I have wanted to go with no problems. These were barely a couple pounds heavier than stock and I don't notice any change in MPG or power. (not that the 4cyl has much power anyway) When these are done, I MAY get a 265x75x16 but will probably just stick with stock and go with a little more aggressive tire.
I see the tires on your truck are Cooper Discoverer tires. I just installed 265 /70 /R16 COOPER DISCOVERER ATP II on my 2023 Toyota Tacoma and it rides so nicely I wish I had put them on earlier on, but I can't complain too much because it only has 7,300 miles.
Older pickups came in such narrower tire sizes. I don't think wide on toyota trucks is really the way/look. Maybe if u got the tundra and a v8. I actually like the old styles and pushing what you got. That truck looks great and several use 265. I'd be happy with a 245 or 255
I have a 2022 Tacoma TRD off road 4wd. I’m going to replaced my stock tires with Method Rim s MR305 bronze 17inch and Nitto 265/65/17 Grappler AT season tires. The weight and dimensions would be close to my stock tire s . I go off road just summer and fall season so don’t need a bigger tire
Just lifted my 2nd gen and shopping around for bigger tires... I've been hesitant about 285/75r16 despite the tire salesman and my supervisor trying to convince me otherwise. My other considerations are that both my spare tire and dedicated winter tires are stock 265/70r16... if a 265/75r16 goes flat it's easier to limpb on stock spare vs 33🛞. Also the tire chains I carry are compatible with 265/70r16 and 265/75r16
Cal me crazy but my truck feels more than power enough for 33s… won’t be going back. 2nd gen 2014. Anddd only on a 2.5 level kit I rub at full lock in reverse ONLY.
The host bangs a lot against the 285. Everyone please: "285 is just the contact point or width in mm of the tire. That's not the diameter." Finally, after viewing the transcript, I found what tire type/size the host has on his Tacoma: "P265/75/R16." Finally.
I have a 2023 tacoma pro. I went with a wescott design lift. went with the 275/70/17 on the trd pro 4runner wheel. No issues. Not really aggressive eighther. But like you said it works for me.
I have a set of black rhino's I'm going to mount 265/75/r16 toyo open country RT's soon and they have a -10 offset, how's the poke from your tires out the fenders look?
275 65/18 kumho road, this is what I have been running this past year. Almost the same hight as the 285 but noooo rubbing and very little mods.😃👍 Oh yah 😃glad to see you kept the taco. It's way more fun adding to an existing truck than to start with another fat payment. This style is the longest running style so don't have to keep up with the Joneses 😁👍 just have fun with it.
I totally agree, I just put Bilstein 5100s with new Bilstein coilovers. It gave me about inch half lift in the front. The truck had 265 65r17 on it, so I went up to 265 70r17. Runs soo much better and I love the look. Your truck looks Awesome, nice job 👍😁
Man I'm in the middle of building up my 2023 Tacoma TRD Off-Road and yeah, no 285's here for me. I lifted it 2.5" in the front, 2" in the rear, rear has OME heavy load leaf springs and OME shocks and I went with 265/75/R16 Toyo MT's. I'm building this truck for overlanding on the weekends and the 265/75/R16 Toyo MT's give me plenty of clearance and off-road capabilities and the truck still has the factory ride too. With the lift, tires, roof rack, bed rack, and roof top tent I only lost 1.5mpg.
@@OfficialAing I'll be honest, I think a lot of 285's actually look too big for the Tacoma the way most people run them. I think I my 265/75 Toyo MT's look perfect.
I had some of these problems but not anymore. Have a '19 pro and went with 33s with class c wildpeaks (fuel vectors -12) only gained 11 pounds per tire. I did have to lift with Eibach Springs (giving it 3 " lift total in the front, 1" block in the rear) and she doesn't rub at all full lockout, forward or reverse, and I've fully articulated the suspension just not full wheelin. Got tuned (kdmax) and the truck responds better and feels just as quick (you know what I mean) as it did stock if not better. I did lose 2mpg but I only drive her 6k miles a year
High caster UCA actually tend to move the wheel back 95% of the time for proper alignment. I have 295/70/17 on Icon rebound wheels with a 3in lift and do not rub with my stock UCAs. After market UCAs I had rubbing issues so i went back to stock ones. I would say correcting offset should be the first step from rubbing issues. I do agree they definitely add weight and do not help with power and transmission gear hunting.
My 202 Tacoma now has over 50 k miles . I installed zero offset 17" Fuel wheels with 285 17 MTs, They rubbed often. So I just Changed to 275 -70 -17 ATs and so far no rubbing.
I run 265 70 R16 with a 16" wheel 16x8 with -12mm offset Makes it look aggressive with a little wheel poke Basically just a 2" lift in the front I took off my huge lift and oversized wheels and tires for the exact reasons you mentioned
Absolutely true, most ppl are not needing 285 70 17 not crawling or full time 4x4 . I got econoline action van suspension lift and run 265 75 16 ko2 E Absolutely awesome mpg and lesser power lost
Also per this video. I feel like when people want a massive lift and 285s on a Tacoma they kind of just want a bigger truck than what a Tacoma should be. Apart from something that makes the stock look pop, what makes a Tacoma look sick is the subtleties of aftermarket mods while keeping it a midsize look. People that want oversized tires and crazy lifts should just get a Tundra or other full size pickup imo.. heavy duty off-roading, yea I get that, but lets be honest, I bet 70% of people with 285s don’t actually hit the trails and COULD get anywhere they really go with stock size tires. I just put 265 70 17s on mine and I know for a fact that any of the “off roading” I’ll ever do is doable with them.
The rub talk drives me insane. I agree with you completely. The 265/75r/16 still rubbed with or without the mud flap. Drove me nuts how many people said it wouldn’t. I’m here to tell you it does on a TRD off road. Finally did a 2.5 in lift and problem solved
Thanks for the video. A few months ago I purchased a 2023 Taco SR5 v6 4x4 Double Cab short bed, I was thinking about installing Bilsteins 5100 all around the front adjustment at the one right below the very top click and the rear with a one inch block, then adding 265/75R/16. What is your take on this type of setup?
I use the 265 70R16 on my Tacoma. It has been okay for most of the off-roading I do and I don't think I've lost any mpg. Rolling weight on a Tacoma is a bad idea unless you completely change the Engine and transmission tuning. 285 will also nearly never fit without rubbing, unless you chop parts of the body/frame. My truck looks "weird", like it has tiny tires, but hey, it does what I want it to do, so I don't care. Also, the payload on the Tacoma isn't that great on the 4 door model, so if you load it up, you are not gonna have a good time. Just adding a bull bar, winch, and rock sliders was enough to make me feel the difference in weight. I guess I'll need to lose a 100 lbs and go down to 125 lbs to offset this lol
Hey Aing I have 285/75/16 on my Tacoma and I do understand the sluggish feeling. Once these At3 Wildpeaks are done I plan on switching back to stock wheels and going with a 255/85/16 (Skinny tire lol)
I'm in the same situation with my GMC Sierra. I am resiting the main stream 35,s and sticking with 33,s. Also, do you have two different colored wheels?
Great feedback man! I'm on my second Tacoma and I always have had 265/70r17 and I love it. It give me plenty of ground clearance for what I do (Surf fishing) and no huge impact on gas mileage, drivebality and all the stuff. I do get a lot of thumbsup for my truck and I'm happy with it. 😊🛻Also, try the Falken Wildpeak AT3, they are slightly bigger than the other brands, but the down side is that they are also a bit heavier. But totally worth it for me at least 😊
@bobwoerner8731 0 seconds ago just bought a brand new 2023 sr5 4x4 tacoma. it has 245 75/r16 firestone destination le2 with the dark rim. i find the truck sitting lower than i like.used to the 1500 ram i traded in.i find i have to tilt my head to get into the tacoma also not crazy about the dark rims.would like to switch the rims to a crome color and put on tires that will raise the truck without having to install a lift kit ....any suggestions ?
Getting 265/75 /r16 toyo open country rt trails installed as we speak, can't wait to see see them on my 2012 tacoma, oh and wheels are black rhino's shogun in mat black 😎🤘🏾🤘🏾
Not sure why I listen to tire person but I put 265/75r16 on my single cab f150 with 355 gear , I was spending $500 on fuel per month and that driving calmly 😭 took me a year to notice how much fuel 😢
Hey sweet looken ride man ! How many inches of lift do you have and what’s the offset of the rims you have to ? I’m looking to go bigger with the 275/70/r17 from my 265/70 with a -12 offset and a 2 inch lift in front and 1 inch in the rear.
All your points are very valid Personally for me the sluggishness really doesn’t bother me I have a 3.5in lift and 275/70R18’s aka 33.2in tires and I love it I also have a 135lb front bumper and a Ikamper on a full height bed rack and a lot of equipment inside However where I live in Montana I very rarely go above 60 mph and It sees probably 50% dirt 50% highway But if you’re daily driving on faster highways and don’t do a lot of offroading then you rock those 265’s like you got the most badass Tacoma around cuz you should build your truck around your needs not others needs
Tires look great! I've always thought the Tacoma was a great tuck. That is why when I swaped my tires and kept mine stock size and went with a better AT.. of course my sport had crappy all seasons. They had to go. Gas mpg stayed the same, and a nice quiet ride. Actually just got back from a road trip average 21, top 23.3!
Is it the light, or are your wheels different from side to side.? Black on passenger and silver on drivers. Has to be the lighting..lol Nice looking Taco.
love the opposite side aesthetics that’s a fun idea! what’s ur setup in this video? obviously 265s(i’d assume 265/70) and do u have a lift and what’s ur offset rn? love the videos my man
Getting my Tacoma in 2 days and I can’t decide what tire I want. Definitely going with the 265s but what are some good AT’s?? BFG KO2’s are at the top of my list right now.
Every time i see a Tacoma, my legs start to hurt. They are not made for people with long legs. I’ve only been in one for under 30 mins and I’m scarred for life😂

275 is the magic number for Tacomas. Just blows my mind that everyone looks past 275 and immediately jumps to 285 desires.
I hear ya. If you have 16 inch wheels like most off-roaders do, 285 is the only option unless you stick with 265/75r16’s like I did.
275 only come in Load E, maybe that’s why
Why not 255/85/16?

Hmmmmmm maybe in a video coming soon near you 🤔

Facts, glad someone said it.
Hey Aing I have 285/75/16 on my Tacoma and I do understand the sluggish feeling. Once these At3 Wildpeaks are done I plan on switching back to stock wheels and going with a 255/85/16 (Skinny tire lol)
Yea I think I’m doing the 255 next as well 😎
Those only come in mud terrain though
@@Fakingittilimakeit yeaaaaa…..We shall see what happens
Im on this now on my 22. I think Im going to side with 275/70/17 for my next setup.
I’m going to be overlanding in my truck and decided to slap 265/75/17 on the truck with 2.5” lift
Still looking good 👍🏻 nice truck 🛻
Agreed! Thank you! 😎
Can you tell me what wheels you have there and the size and offset? Love these rims
I totally agree I had tacomas also and mad the same mistakes
Now have 2in lift in the front 1 in the back and very happy with the way it looks
What's your thoughts on 255/80/17...? Would you have the same issues as 285s?
I'm in the same situation with my GMC Sierra. I am resiting the main stream 35,s and sticking with 33,s. Also, do you have two different colored wheels?
I run 275's and they are perfect for me
255/ 85 /16 is where its at, 33 but 10 inch wide
I will run that as my next set
Expensive in my neck of the woods lol. Almost $330 a tire for Coopers
Also I have 265 75 with stock wheels
Very nice! I love this tire size! I appreciate you watching, thank you!
I’m happy with my 265/75R16’s. Baja Boss
noticed have the silver rims on one side and black on the othere ? WHATS UP?
HAHA I used to use that sidewall joke in my technician days. Amazing people still use it. The old school lives on in the new school.
265/65 18 is what came with my 24 Canyon AT4. I might go 255/70 next.
Maybe 255/85r16?
Great wheel choice . Everyone seems. To be hopping in the stock look now . Black got old

just bought a brand new 2023 sr5 4x4 tacoma. it has 245 75/r16 firestone destination le2 with the dark rim. i find the truck sitting lower than i like.used to the 1500 ram i traded in.i find i have to tilt my head to get into the tacoma also not crazy about the dark rims.would like to switch the rims to a crome color and put on tires that will raise the truck without having to install a lift kit ....any suggestions ?
Absolutely correct, 265's are the perfect size
100%
Where did you find those wheels
I think it looks great. Enjoyed your video.
what offset are you running in this video ?
I have 285 on mine with a 3 inch lift no problem at all🤨🇲🇽
That’s awesome bro 😎
Looks great with 265s too.
This makes me feel better. Just put 275/75/R16s on my Tacoma. Wondered if 285 would be better, but didn't do it.
275/75/16 tires don’t exist.
All your points are very valid
Personally for me the sluggishness really doesn’t bother me
I have a 3.5in lift and 275/70R18’s aka 33.2in tires and I love it I also have a 135lb front bumper and a Ikamper on a full height bed rack and a lot of equipment inside
However where I live in Montana I very rarely go above 60 mph and It sees probably 50% dirt 50% highway
But if you’re daily driving on faster highways and don’t do a lot of offroading then you rock those 265’s like you got the most badass Tacoma around cuz you should build your truck around your needs not others needs
Smart man. Running a tire for function is wise. Running a tire for looks is adolescent. So many tacos running non-functional wheels.
Very very nice! I saw 21mpgs and I was like….wait is this real life? Lol
Is it the light, or are your wheels different from side to side.? Black on passenger and silver on drivers. Has to be the lighting..lol Nice looking Taco.
Why not 255/85r16?
Not a bad choice and it may be my next size if I do go with 33s again
love the opposite side aesthetics that’s a fun idea! what’s ur setup in this video? obviously 265s(i’d assume 265/70) and do u have a lift and what’s ur offset rn? love the videos my man
What width rims?
I’m sticking 275/65/18 2” lift 👍
Thanks for the review ✊✊👍👍💪💪
You bet! 😎
Getting my Tacoma in 2 days and I can’t decide what tire I want. Definitely going with the 265s but what are some good AT’s?? BFG KO2’s are at the top of my list right now.
Love your wheels. Can you tell me what kind they are? I know their 17,s but brand and offset
...nice....what's the color your truck?
Did you regear?
Looks good still!
Agreed!!!
Whats your rim bs and offset?
Nice truck
Thank you!
Or, hear me out…
255/80 R17…. 2” lift. Zero issues.
The 4.0L Tacoma I HAD was a speed demon for sure.
😂Same here currently, love my 2012 TRD sport 4x4 😎👍🏽
Looks cool bro!!!
Being happy with your truck and protecting your investment is all that matter.
Agreed!
what rims are those ?
Great review!
More damage than good with 285’s. I have to agree but it looks so much better.
Imma go with 265/75r16
Great comments
Thanks. Great video!!
I see that Aing emblem👌
Yessir 😎😎
This guy looks like the Mexican actor who played Leon in the movie welcome to raccoon city resident evil.
😂😂😂 definitely see what you’re saying
The 265s with the black wheels look better than the 285s with the silver wheels. Just my opinion.
Great video.
Every time i see a Tacoma, my legs start to hurt. They are not made for people with long legs. I’ve only been in one for under 30 mins and I’m scarred for life😂
