It was awesome to see these postures at work in competition. Since I've come across Priit on BJJ globetrotters I have been a fan and bought all his dvd's on BJJ Fanatics. I think it's incredibly thoughtful and worked through Jiu Jitsu and I've found it really useful in my own practice. Neat to see it well executed and have it work!
It would be nice to see some offense mixed in with so much defense, yes the other guy looked frustrated, but at no point was he put in any danger. I feel like counter attacks are needed.
I watched the original video and will go through this one now. I must say I could see the frustration on Sams's face as he was being yelled at to apply a seatbelt grip. You can see he was trying everything he could think of and it wasn't happening. But the corner just kept yelling at him. Interesting match!
Whoah! That was the coolest example of your principles I've seen so far. So funny to see all the common techniques, guillotine, rear choke, leglock just completely fail when the defender uses Turtle and Running Man. And this is just DEFENSE. If he had used a few wrestling counters from those same positions, like elbow roll, or sitout to Turn in and armspin or Granby to armbar, it would have been even better. Soo interesting!
There are I think couple of rolls also free on this channel and also some on my site where you can see me roll I do not rush with putting things out. Do you play with that stuff / the system also yourself?
@@DefensiveBJJ yes, it's been a amazingly helpful. Now I know why I lose, like you say. My aim is to now graduate to a more active style. I think that's why active turtle interests me so much, because it requires a more active style because it's more "open".
Ok, well I do not know when it is going to be on this channel. I would expect that on my site I will elborate about it because there has been questions on the site forum about how to stand up and how to use the tripod and so on
It seems that with seal feet it is even more passive. We use both at the moment but when teaching beginners I now start with the seal feet version first

Satisfying to watch, I laughed as well. You cannot just spam offense and call it jiu jitsu. I think this is more of the BJJ that Helio envisioned, that there is an invulnerability from good defense.
But only the ruleset here is gifting him invulnerability. Remove the rules and the only way to get anywhere near true 'invulnerability' is to get yourself to a dominant position. This is the equivalent of a boxer learning to get in and out of the pocket without being hit at all, but also not throwing a punch themselves.....
@@maxiboii5518 Literally any other rule set other than sub only and the passer did enough to win. Comp matches have to have time limits or no one could organize an event successfully (at least not long term..). So with in the time limit, the passer displayed control and would be rewarded in any other rules, whether points or refs decision. But why? Because all we can see is what happens within the time limit - So we can only imagine that the pattern of him being on top, attacking and looking improve position would continue. That sort of pattern eventually has a logical conclusion.... submission! That ISNT to say we definitely know what would have happened.... defence guy could be playing rope-a-dope and be wearing his opponent out, for example... but without the pay off we cant see that in the time given. What we saw is what we saw, passer on top being positionally dominant in every way. His actions could at least in theory lead to a better position and sub, defensive guys couldnt.... he would have to first change to be attacking also, which we didnt see in the time.
@@maxiboii5518 My basic point remains - What is this style useful for other than some sort of intellectual 'chess-like' fascination with the intricacies of grappling defence? Not that there is anything wrong with that if that's all someone is looking for.... But lets not pretend its more? This style couldn't be used to win any known sports grappling tournament anywhere. So what about for 'martial arts' reasons? ....well it obviously couldn't be used for self defence either, as 'being defensive' in most grappling contexts leaves you horribly vulnerable to strikes. This style is fun I guess, as a game..... but ultimately a bit pointless (to me). Its like training to stay in the ring with a boxer and not let him hit you by never entering the pocket and opening up once to land your own punches. Its 'not losing' by not trying to win.

Your striking comment is interesting. To hold someone in a position requires pressure. When you lift to strike you take away pressure. In a defensive posture when someone takes pressure away to strike that’s when you move to get up. Very common in mma. Try it with gloves at the gym.
@@izzydangerous6990 very true. Demian maia himself realized this mid-way through his career and started opting for almost zero strikes for damage/points once he has someone in a dominant position on the ground. Prior to this Far too many people were getting out of this world champion BJJ guys mount etc …. the flip side to this guys like khabib or even ben askren, these are people you simple can’t afford to turtle up on and hope for that release of pressure to then escape as it will just never come …. Fantastic content, very insightful to see what Priit has been preaching in actual practice, I hope to see more of this kind of stuff.
Lets hope ...time will tell!
Really appreciate seeing these ideas applied in competition and broken down by Priit. Very helpful
love it. becoming such a fanboy of pritt, i'd love for him to do this for me!

Very clear use of your system. Pausing in the trenches makes it unmistakable. I hope to see more info on active turtle.
More info? On the channel? Like techniques or how it is used in sparring?

In the running man, you’re not worried about getting mounted since the knees are pointed downward at 15:00
There also a upper body structure that does not allow it to happen that easily
It’s cool that even with the seal feet, the posture is still hard to break.

Yup ...now we know more and we use both. Also we have added upright turtle to the system.
