    Anyone who has walked around a city in Nor Cal knows that all too many drivers are not looking out for pedestrians - doing so would require them to stop looking at/texting with their phones. They roll through red lights (you have to stop before turning on a through red light!) and stop signs. It has gotten so bad that more than once I've had other drivers at a four way stop assume that I'm yielding the right of way to them because I always come to a complete stop at stop signs even if there is no one else around!

    Your problems are with engineering, not with enforcement. You can have all the police in the world and if they cannot see that there is a pedestrian crossing you are not going to fix it. This is a good case for wider sidewalks, bump outs, a refuge island, and a raised crossing. And they work, according to the SFMTA.

      That car at 0:38 is illegally parked. New state law this year says 20ft from the crosswalk, yet it's. clearly just a few feet. The whole reason we passed this new law is for pedestrian safety, yet that car is not being ticketed.

      @@heyaisdabomb because if it is still physically possible to park there people will. In New York City you see a lot of government vehicles parked illegally. I would like to see more police giving out tickets to motorists who run red lights, block intersections and crosswalks.
    Tickets should be made very expensive. There should be demerit points. In return, the money collected from the tickets should be used to pay for more traffic police or improve road infrastructure. Too many roads have faded paint and are crumbling.
    We need to change the cross walks to one where pedestrians can press a button, and there would be flickering lights while they are crossing the crosswalk.

    38 seconds in the video. Walker walks from the dark shadow that covers the first third of the crosswalk into bright light plus a parked car hurts driver visibility. @@E_Clampus_Vitus No, they are often partly at fault for their own deaths though. 15 pedestrians were killed last year, at least 2 of those were killed on side walks by cars that lost control because they were criminals fleeing police, 1 was killed by a women making a right turn on green (so they ban right turn on red in response), and how many others are even paying attention when they enter the crosswalk. Yes, pedestrians have right of way, but that doesn't mean you should be on your phone texting and not even looking while entering a crosswalk. I this behavior all of the time, it's shocking to me more people aren't hit.

    This operation is a limited narrow response to a widely reported horrific tragedy ( a speeding wrong way driver ) that doesn’t happen every day. Yet these community members are clearly at risk every day from a problem that clearly DOES happen every day. Maybe the high numbers will prompt some long term action. I hope so. But really a lot of ignorance & neglect on the part of drivers needs to be addressed. All insurance companies should contribute to funding a public service information program that reaches drivers via ads and offers a website full of reminders, tips, statistics, reports and shares drivers stories & experiences.

      I really don't get how no right on red fixes the problem. So the only time I can turn right is when pedestrians are in the crosswalk? That women who killed the 4 year old ran over the stroller making a right turn on GREEN. The problem I often see and why your for no right turn on red is pedestrians cut the corner short. Instead of going to the handicap ramp and entering the crosswalk, they will enter the street 15 feet before the crosswalk and diagonally walk towards the cross walk. As a result, the pedestrian becomes blind to any car at the stop light. I almost hit some once because they did this as my light turned green and they clearly had a "do not cross" sign. Maybe pedestrians need to also take some responsibility in this.

    under the new laws passed this year in California, no car shall park within 20 feet of a crosswalk. In this video, the first decoy uses a car parked right in front of a crosswalk so drivers can't see him until the last second. That car is illegally parked, so why is their no mention in this story about that illegally parked car? This law was passed just for pedestrian safety.

  • @rsqwerks
    @rsqwerks 14 дней назад +1

    Yes cars are a problem but pedestrians need some consideration of the road and it's flow. The world doesn't center around cars nor pedestrians. Show some respect.

    Yield to pedestrians, but bicyclists should have to stop. They don't go the same pace as pedestrians and often times when a car has started to move, bicyclists wil just assume the right of way going as fast as cars at the intersection.
