  • Despite all the warnings and tragedies, an average of 660,000 drivers are hitting the nation's roads distracted behind the wheel, busy with cell phones or other electronics. Ben Tracy reports on how police in one California city are taking an unusual approach to stop the potentially deadly habit.

    • @redtra236
      @redtra236 5 лет назад

      How is it entrapment? They are in no way encouraging them to use their phones. Now if they held up a sign telling them to take a picture or call/text a certain number then ticketed them for cell phone use that would be entrapment. Entrapment is baiting the person in to breaking the law which they are not doing.

      You shouldn’t give money to homeless. Most of the time there’s a reason that they’re homeless, and it’s not because it’s someone else’s fault. They made bad decisions and will continue to do so. Doesn’t matter how much money you give them.

    is it just a financial penalty that motorists incur for using a mobile while driving? Here in England the penalties have recently increased, its a £200 fine, thats approx $250, but a persons licence is also endorsed with 6 penalty points, the points remain logged on your licence for three years and if you collect 12 points or more in total in that time your licence is revoked and you can be disqualified for driving for a year, so that lady in the clip who was caught using here phone twice in the space of two weeks would most likely have to appear in court and receive a driving ban if it was in England, and after a driving ban is logged on you record car insurance becomes very very expensive as you are seen as a high risk. Do they have a points system in the USA,? ..its quite a good deterrent because it is a more significant consequence than just a fine.

    • @PrimeDiam
      @PrimeDiam 6 лет назад +1

      No point system here, it's more of a warning, a fine, another fine, possibly another fine, then jail time. Depends on how the officer's days were.

    • @ColinRichardson
      @ColinRichardson 5 лет назад

      The points on your licence can increase your insurance costs dramatically too. Go from around £300 a year to £1000 in some circumstances.

    • @Kris_P._Bey_Ken
      @Kris_P._Bey_Ken 5 лет назад

      I don't know about all states but in some states they have the point system were if you commit traffic violations you get points on your record and when you get a certain amount, you get your drivers license suspended for a certain amount of time.

    • @ColinRichardson
      @ColinRichardson 5 лет назад

      Yes, exactly like the UK, except it also makes your insurance skyrocket, so it's both financial for the fine, financial for the next 3-5 years on insurance premiums, AND the points that rack up with the suspension of licence for xx years.

    I'd be very curious to know how many tickets are given to people at intersections vs people who are actually driving while texting. I realize both are illegal, but one is clearly more unsafe than the other. The worst you're going to do texting at an intersection is not see the green light right away and hold up traffic until someone honks at you; not exactly as dangerous as texting on the highway at 55mph as the video implies. I still think both should be illegal, I just find it funny the resources they put into catching people at intersections when it's the folks driving at highway speeds while on their phone I'm worried about. I doubt the 1.6 million crashes involving cell phones they mentioned were from people going 0mph.

      In terms of texting and driving, we can record/take photos of a police officer doing so if he/she is not in an emergency call, so to say.

      1) Documenting someone else using their phone is a little hard to do without using your phone yourself.
      2) Good luck getting anyone to care. Seriously, just do a quick search for "Ex Cop Confronts Florida Cops Who Refused To Ticket Illegally Parked Cop Cars" or any number of videos of houses being raided with no warrant. The idea that those who create and enforce laws are being held to the same standard as those they govern is a complete joke.
      If you are entirely unable to enforce a law on someone, they are exempt. Our government is largely exempt from being held to any standard whatsoever.

      Fucking idiot. That maneuver, for one, is not dangerous at all, ESPECIALLY for a "motorcycle cop" with *sirens and lights on*. Checking your voicemail requires you to look at the phone to pull it up. At least the police officer is looking around and can see cars around him, and hopefully cars can see him.
      That is, if the vehicles around him are not distracted and run through the light and into him. Then, it's the fucking idiot who was distracted's fault and is the dangerous one, not the "motorcycle cop"

    Texting and driving should be a 1000 dollar ticket so they learn. More than 6,000 people die a year cause of this. Just put your phone in the glove department and leave it there!

      Yep!!!!! I wonder how much of our car insurance premiums cover the 1.6 MILLION accidents annually. That's alot of body work. Folks can point fingers at the police, but then doing their job may end up saving us all some cash

    0:33 "Don't give to the homeless people, I'm a police officer." Well isn't that a personal choice? To give kindly and freely to whoever you choose.
