you use, as an example, frequent air travellers getting priority over others for upgrades. however, they aren't selling those "upgrades" on to make a fast buck unlike many loyal customers who walk out the AD's door and straight to a grey dealer. this is at the expense of those who want a Rolex to treasure and have as a family heirloom.

A week ago I was visiting my AD. Just wanted to say hello. One of the sales ladies said oh we just got in a sea dweller, two tone.
I'm waiting for just the all SS. This is amazing, my AD already received a Rolex. A sea dweller showing up at an AD that is a 14 hour hour drive to the ocean. At least Rolex's are starting to trickle into the AD. My AD is family owned. They own over six stores. The AD does not do sale orders over the phone, no credit numbers over the phone, they do not move their watches from store to store. When a GMT comes in, it stays at that store.
If a flipper comes in from the middle east. They say no, the store only sells to locals they know. Now the odds go way way up for getting the sport watch we want.

I’m pretty sure that I’m near the top of the “list”, as I’ve been allocated a Panda Daytona, Pepsi, etc. And I’m here to tell you, there’s no “list”, the “list” is whoever spends the most money at that particular AD, and they have that documented down to the penny. Regardless, I had a feeling this was going to happen Oisin, as my AD offered me the Red Sea-Dweller just prior to your last video, and these things tend to be shipped in bunches.

Yeah, I'm a Porsche guy and have shared this analogy before on watch forums. Back in 2016 when the GT3 RS came out there were huge waitlists for that car. The really good stuff you need to be invited to buy based on past purchase history. It's this way with a lot of luxury goods, not just Rolex. The difference with cars though is that the dealers are less constrained on the selling price, so on hot models they will often just add a "market adjustment" of $20K to $50K or more additional cost. I'm glad the Rolex AD doesn't do that, I'd rather wait and get the watch without the markup, but with Rolex you at least have the choice - wait or go grey.

The whole AD game and preferred customer stuff is difficult.
My experience has been pretty starightforward, I bought my first Rolex last year, I had no previous history with the AD.
I rang up and enquired after an Explorer. I got told that should not be a problem and 5 days later I got a call saying they had just had a shipment in and there was one availible.
Maybe I was lucky, maybe I made my own luck by engaging with the AD, I think that asking for an Explorer (Which I love) meant I wasn't asking for the moon, so it was achievable.
Now I am a valued customer with a previous sales history so I asked if I could buy a ND Sub. I was told that the wait would be a bit longer but they would get me one. 4 months later I got the call and I now have a brand new 41mm ND Sub,
I wore my Explorer when I went to pick up the Sub and they noticed and asked how I had been getting on with it. (Also demonstrating to them that I am not a flipper)
I had a long chat with the AD told them how much I appreciated the service and asked if I could be put on the list for a GMT BLNR.
They told me that wasn't a problem and in the follow up email regarding the Sub told me they had done so.
We will have to see how long the wait might be.
At no time was it suggested that I might like to buy something else that I didn't want.
I doubt that I would have got on the list for a Sub or GMT so easily if I hadn't bought the explorer.
The people I feel sorry for are those who have saved and saved and only want to buy one watch, maybe they have always dreamed of buying a Sub. How will they ever get one?

I modded it with different hands (kept the seconds hand), lumed bezel insert, lumed chapter ring, and took a flame, hammer and knife to remove the cyclops. On this watch it’s not as easy to remove that cyclops as what you see on RUclips. I melted the chapter ring in the process 😩so I replaced it with the lumed chapter ring. Watch looks 100 % better IMO. This is my first with a glidelock clasp, which is just fantastic. Mine is a 2022, new from an AD, but it is still the variant that has a flip lock, which I understand is being phased out as so many people take it off. After being led on about being on a list for a watch, I think the main sales lady felt bad for me and she ended up explaining to me how the list works in their store (large nationwide AD). They have two lists. One list is for “qualified” customers and the other is for unqualified. Since I had no purchase history, she told me I was on the second list. In other words, if no one wants it from the first it goes to the second. Exactly like you said.

vianouche1 yes she did tell me. She said I’d have to make a purchase to become a qualified buyer as she put it. She told me this after a year of waiting fir the sky dweller in SS. There’s no formal “list.” They have a little black book each rep or manager keeps with names and preferred watches. This particular AD gets certain watches they deem hard to get, and they release the list to their reps. The reps have to pitch their clients to get the watch. Obviously, I’m not specifically a qualified buyer, I take a back seat u less no one else bites. To be clear, she didn’t tell me to bundle or do anything, she just explained to me their criteria given the supply v demand. this was already two years ago. Still no call. Don’t be naive. I’m sure there are decent smaller ADs. This is Ben Bridge in LA and they’re nationwide. I’ve heard this from other reps at other locations too. No calls from any of them and I think I made a good impression at both locations. Again, a little over two years and no calls from either. In fact, I travel a lot for work pre covid. I made it a point to stop into CA based ADs which is where I live. I’ve probably expressed my interest at 10+ locations. No calls from any. I stick to one model (usually GMT or sky dweller) and I wear my 2015 Daytona. I usually have a story as to why I want it or like it and I think I make a good impression. No calls! Don’t be naive. A lucky acquisition here or there is rare unless you have a history. In fact I have a history with one AD for a datejust I bought and it’s been 1.5 years now I’ve been waiting for a Pepsi. It’s in an expensive area and my DJ purchase is nothing for this AD/jeweler.

I put my name on “the list” for a standard ceramic sub two years ago. I got a call the two days later. Why? Because I’ve spent 6 figures at that particular AD; not because I got “lucky.” It’s the same reason, despite their awful customer service recently, I fly United; because I get business class more often than not due to my loyalty. Your explanation is SPOT ON.

good speech about the AD "loyalty" thing. I am not a "priority" customer with any ADs. Hence I am not getting my stainless steel Rolex. It's very frustrating. But I can understand. It's just business...

That 41mm Rolex date just with silver dials is such a classic watch. Beautiful watch, reminds me of the 60’s. BTW every time I collect a new watch I always take gifts to the AD, very important to look after them.

Christmas Eve I walked into a brand new Rolex boutique in Vegas. I was at the mall ONLY to pick up an online order at the Apple store. I was the only customer in the store. I had NEVER been there before. The young guy working there didn't know me from Adam. They had their regular watches in the window and the cases inside the store. I asked if he had anything else available. And he asked which model. I replied 40mm YachtMaster in Navy dial. He responded, "let me check". He went in the back came back and said, "Here you go". I was shocked. Hehehe I held it, looked at it and admired it's beauty but felt it looked much smaller than the photos I've seen before. (I'm a Batman wearer). I said anything else you're hiding back there and he responded which model? I said the new 41mm Blusey. He said, "let me check". Sure enough he returns with one and says, "Merry Christmas". I was taken aback! Now, here I am with the Holy Grail Submariner Blusey at the very beginning of an upgrade to the model and basically he was calling my bluff. I had no choice. I plopped down my credit card and bought the damn thing!!! HAHAHAHAAA I went to the mall to spend $1200 on an IPhone and ended up spending ANOTHER $15,400 with tax on a watch I was not really looking to spend. I felt compelled because of this AD wait list exclusivity BS. So I feel your pain. You can't deny an AD offering you a piece that they would normally hold for a "long term customer".

Wore my AirKing to show I was already a customer and had a long enough visit to learn first hand all the little features on the Dive watches but not so long as to become a pain, say 30-40 mins, the next time I go in, in a few months they will remember me, maybe I will go get a piece of jewellery polished there in the mean time - Im going to play the game, I want my Rolex'

If it were me, The first thing I’d do is loose that Seiko. The only redeeming quality of it is the “Day-Date” vs “Date” only. Then I’d put a Rubber B black strap with thin red matching accent stripe on one of those SDs. Not knocking your personal taste - glad you really like your Seiko. Another great video! And congrats!

It does sound messed up but it makes sense. I’ve been on a list since October for a sub. This is someone I’m related but they barely received anything and flat out said there are others before me who have spent more and I understood. They only received 2 Daytona’s last year. I wanted one so I went and bought gray market and moved on. If the sub comes, it comes.

You sir, are a good luck charm (at least for me). Literally within two days of watching this, I got the call from my AD for this piece and picked it up today here in DC area of the U.S. Big ass watch but I’ve been lusting after this piece for a while now and its finally here!! Unboxed with a glass of McCallan 15, neat (and took one to my sales guy - still looking for a sky dweller and a green dial sub 41 but think I’ll be waiting a while for those pieces...). Cheers!!

I bought all the rolexes I wanted before the craze: sd43, dssd JC, explorer2 black 216570, explorer2 226570 polar and Daytona ceramic SS black dial. But even before I was buying Breguet, Zenith, jlc and Blancpain. I'm just waiting for Daytona ceramic SS panda.
But I believe the waiting lists are bullshit the AD selles them to his friends (I'm a loyal customer, bought 7 watches in 4 years). I also think have gray market back doors.

You’re spot on in the comparison with airlines, but for one thing: the airlines share information upfront about it, and it’s pretty clear how you navigate it. You admit as much when you call out AA’s priority codes. Rolex ADs are unethical entirely because they set the rules and don’t make them clear. That creates a deliberate market inefficiency that breaks in their favor every time. Rolex creates a transparent prioritization system, I promise you all of the haters will pipe down.

Congrats Oisin on the watch and as always your a voice of reason. I have five Rolex all bought at retail or below before the hype started- I haven't flipped and I'm a local customer to my AD. Of course they take care of me. Now that all the Rolex hype exists, people that all of a sudden want in on the action for the first time who are much more likely to be flippers are delusional if they want to get their watches before historically loyal customers. Too bad so sad, buy what you like and maybe your passion will be hyped one day and you'll understand what actual loyal customers feel like. Also, I appreciate that Rolex doesn't just ramp up production to satisfy the urge of the impatient sheepall which would ultimately diminish the Rolex brand exclusivity.
