A Rolex still in stickers: Is the Sea Dweller an investment watch?

  • Victor from Spain is facing a tough set of choices. His Rolex 43mm Sea Dweller SD43, Rolex 126600 can go back to the Rolex Service Center to be regulated. But will the RSC remove the stickers? Will that devalue his watch? And is the Rolex 3235 movement fatally flawed? So many questions! Let's talk about it.

I bought many watches with the idea of selling them in some point, like panda Daytona, blue steel sky dweller, few datejusts,….etc but when I saw the sea dweller with the magnifying bubble and 43mm size, for me this is the Rolex to have, it had the exact great look of submariner and it is chunky “which is a plus for me”. So I didn’t care about the value because for me this is a matter for my kids after me

Yes indeed wear it!! I bought my SD43 a month ago and I've been wearing it constantly since I put it on in the shop (I even sleep withit). The only time it leaves my wrist is when I'm at the gym or when I'm about to do any other activities that might damage the watch. I by watches because I like them and for wearing them witch I usually do for very long periods. And when I want a change I'll take one of my other watches and wear it for some time. And when I do I'm just as happy when I put it on as I was the first time!!😄😄

I just got mine about a month ago also. So far I love it. Everyone talks about how big this watch is but I don’t think it wears that big even on my 6.5 inch wrist. It is a thick watch but I have been wearing for a straight month and can say it would be fine for a daily driver. So far mine is running plus 1sec a day.

The Mark 1 will go up. It’s the first production year for the 50 year Anniversary. Collectors of dive watches will snatch all those Mark 1’s. They didn’t make that many. After a few years those will all be in safes. So grab them while there are still in the ball park.

If I was going to pick a Sea-Dweller for an investment it would be the SDK4000 as it had such a short production run. If your 43mm Sea-Dweller is out of spec then I would take it to a well known independent Rolex repair guy. If you tell them not to remove stockers then they will keep them. I personally went for the Sea Dweller because I got the the date without a cyclops plus I find the Submariner to be a bit too ubiquitous for my taste.

agreed, if there's one SD that could be very collectible, it's probably going to be the 116600, ridiculously short production run for a modern rolex, the previous generation and next generation looking nothing like it, and widely considered as a 'transitional' model.

Personally I would NOT wear the watch, he hasn't worn it for years, so clearly it's not a priority. I'd just sell it with stickers and all and recoup my money.

Exactly! This dude doesn’t know what he’s talking about lol. But hey, everyone’s got an opinion. If anything, and this is what I’m predicting, this watch the the next sleeper. The last big sleeper was the John Meyer green dial Daytona. This is that next big sleeper. And the reason I say this is because, if you really think about the history of the SD, this is the culmination of everything, that I believe, Rolex envisioned for the SD. A great example of that is their signature cyclops. They couldn’t do it before because of technological limitations 50 years ago. Now they can. They brought back the single red letter, which I suspect they will revert back to white at some point. This reference, imo, is one of the most important Rolex references to come out in the last 40 years.

    • @lettuce1305
      @lettuce1305 Год назад

@@carlosopinion5629 If anything, the big sleeper is the previous 116600 that many consider as a 'transitional' SD and only had a production run between 2.5-3 years. Whilst the Mark 1 126600 was only produced for a year or so, the replacement, the Mark 2 which is still super close to the Mark 1 is still in production till now. Given the size and the longer production run, I really doubt the 126600 will outperform the 116600 in the long run.

All I want to say, if I get the Rolex, I may not make much, but I definitely not lose! End if you want to sale it in a few years, you probably get more then original price! Off course a few models are going to be much more expensive! I would say: any Rolex watch is an investment!!

Is the Sea Dweller an investment watch? In one word: No.
The Sea Dweller is a terrible investment. It's a massively underappreciated watch. It's a connoisseur's watch. It's a niche watch. Just like the Milgauss. When you buy a Sea Dweller, you are looking for a Sea Dweller. If you're looking for a dive watch, you buy a Submariner. If you want a dive watch with ridiculous stats, you buy a Deepsea.
The Submariner is the ultimate dive watch. The Sea Dweller is the ultimate Submariner. The Sea Dweller 116600 is the ultimate Sea Dweller. The 116600 is built like a tank without looking like a tank. It's not oversized just to set it apart from the Submariner. It's a normal sized watch that's designed for dive professionals, making it the ideal watch for people who are serious about dive watches.

You are absolutely right, Marc. Wear it. It is a Rolex. No other watch adjust its mechanical automatic movement like them ( I own my own atelier, with Wischi watch expert III chronocomparator, amongst too many other tools). I own a lot of high quality watches (Patek, to name one), and even with the gyromax balance wheel you are not able to obtain the famous Rolex ¨flat line¨(and one of my Pateks is a limited annual calendar, Patek Philippe Advanced Research, with silicon parts). The only watch that is close to the Rolex is the Grand Seiko Spring Drive. BUT you cannot compensate the advance-delay with the overnight position (in spite of its high precision); Rolex IS capable of this, and also Patek (my best Patek is a small Calatrava...what a nice one! I love it!). There's a plethora of watches out there. And some of them are nice (I mean in terms of timekeeping). But none of them are Rolex. Rolex is the go-to watch for the one which wants only one watch for a lifetime. It is strong, it is elegant, it has a extremely reliable support behind it...(errr...I am not a Rolex employee!). In fact, I own a lot of watches because I love them, but from a practical point of view (practical AND stilish), no one ressembles a Rolex. Try to wear a Jaeger, a Chopard, a Vacheron, a Zenith, a Panerai...or a precious watches like the already named Patek, or more recently F. P. Journe. There are no comparison, believe me. It is more a question of...illnes?. Hahahaaa!!!. I love my watches because I am not a practical man. If I were, I will have only a Rolex (or two...or three...or...hahaaa!).
One last thing: I never sold any watch I own. I feel this inside of me something like a betrayal, and even more: a big personal loss. But this is a personal opinion, of course.

With Investment Rolex having the stickers definitely makes the watch more desirable to collectors. A unworn, stickered watch with a unfilled warranty card and all it’s accessories is a true investment grade. A watch in that condition will always command absolute top dollar. Start taking away any of that and the collectibility and value will start dropping. Period. If your looking at a particular Rolex for investment potential there are better choices out there then the current SD43 Redline. The 2014-2016 SD4K for instance. No it’s not, it’s been out for close to 5 years n only going a thousand dollars over retail on the gray market. Where as hot models like Panda, Hulk, Kermit, Root Beer doubled and going to triple the price of MSRP, those are the only good investments if you get it for retail at the AD. Steel sports are hard to get on at the AD but that doesn’t mean the price is astronomical on the second hand market you will only make less than a thousand more if you know what you’re doing buying and selling.

@@Nexus.Achiles The main thing is, that whether you decide to wear it or keep it pristine, it's very, very unlikely you will lose money on it. I really hope you start wearing it Victor and enjoy it. I find sales persons at the ADs take me much more seriously when they notice I'm wearing the SD43 over my others, probably as it's more of an enthusiast's watch than a quick flip investment model.

Wear it or sell it... that's it. Yeah, I think it's 100% that the RSC would remove the stickers. That seems to be the standard demanded from the AD's, so not sure how it even gets out of the AD with stickers. My AD won't leave a single sticker on a Rolex.

I like the watch a lot. Reason it doesn't get much attention is because for most, it's unwearable as it's too big. SD43 is a close second, else it would have been more popular than it currently is. Ever seen an asian wearing a Deep Sea? LOL. They'd have to take off 4 links and the case is still bigger than their wrists.

What a seriously bizarre way to live life!
Marc is totally right here. They are a niche product from Rolex. Far less likely to be sought by women or men with smaller wrists. The entire market for this product is significantly smaller than that for say a GMT or Sub. And even in the current drought, you hear of people picking up watches at retail like this without ridiculous wait times.
For all these reasons, and more, the watch is never likely to be much of an investment. It will likely drift upwards over time, as so many steel Rolex watches do. So you should easily be able to recover your 'investment' when you decide to move on. But so many unlikely scenarios would have to fall into place to make even a couple of grand on it. Which means from an investment perspective there are a ton of other options that would yield better. And clearly the current trend is smaller steel sports watches like the Sub, GMT and Daytona in terms of genuine profit potential. Good luck finding those at retail though, especially once the AD figures out your game.
