One driver I knew back in the 70's and 80's out of North Platt Nebraska had one in a KW900. He might still have it back on the farm, for all I know. Best wishes from the far North.
My boss was famous for KTA 525 and 600 hp KTA motors, a long with the 3408 Cats. The KTA's were my choice and a true beast of a motor. The only thing that could keep up with me was another KTA!
It's a great engine repace the bull gear around 800 000 them 60 series detroit motors are tough good motors and rear main unless you spray with either that dd 60 is reliable
The series 60 was the perfect combination of hp to weight ratio with durability. It was truly a million mile engine.
3406 and Series 60 for the win!
My picks are 3406, 855, and any of the 71 series. Many of those still in operation getting the job done
The KTA was a strongotor but very heavy and expensive to maintain
The problem is trans mission and rear end ratios
The Cummins NYC 400 was a work horse
Had one in a 82 Freightliner
500 000 miles no problem
T he KTA is a the top of the pile drove several & it passed everything , the only truck that ever passed me was a empty truck.

Large? These are not large. Here is an example of large: Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C
This obviously only American list of engines
Yup
If you're going to list the top 5 diesels of all time, you need to go further back and further afield. None of the 5 are what I call large diesels.
