Say hello to my 1999 Honda Civic Ek hatch build. The EK needs lot of TLC & repairs to get it back to its former glory. Stay tuned for more episodes as we getting the hatch ready for a k24 swap and some track days.

I did that with my auburn sky pearl 2001 Lexus is300. Loved it and it drove great... But I got the fever for an sti... Basically traded and blew the motor two weeks later... Took me two years to get another one but finally got it. My daughter then took it without permission and ran it into a horse fence and I sold that... I had given up on the idea but I ran into a 2002 manual... I've had it ever since... 6 years... Longest car I've ever had. Still working on it but not letting it go.

You see how the coolant sprayed when you started it...major sign of head gasket failure. Hence the overheating. If you were to start another vehicle with a good head gasket the coolant wouldn't move.
Came for this comment. Usually the rpm lock is due to a problem with the distributor or the wiring to the distributor. Based on the wiring that you showed so far, it's possible they mickey-moused some wiring to the distributor.
To be honest, this car is in rough shape. I'm in the process of rebuilding an EG. That I've owned for almost 6 years now. I bought it blind too, I saw the fresh paint and was told the motor was being built by a race shop. Really long story short, the motor lasted 4 dyno pulls, the shop owner convinced me everything was normal. Until I took the head off, found the mechanical timing was off and a hole in a piston. From there I've replaced just about everything in the car. Interior wiring was all chopped and twisted with no tape or solder. The suspension had ebay parts with bushings falling out. The gas tank leaked if filled too high.
I've replaced literally every part of the suspension, brakes and fuel system. All the wiring and rebuilt the engine with my own hands. Replaced every sensor. It's about 95% done. But I know it was done right.
My point is, don't waste time trying to track down every issue and make it work. You can look at it and know the last guy didn't give a shit and just made it run. The car looks unsafe and it isn't worth the money to get the single cam working right. Do what you keep saying and k swap it. While you have the motor out, take the time to replace all that trash suspension and make the car safe to drive first.
It's an aweomse base to start with. I can tell you guys actually care about the project. When all is said and done, that car is going to be really nice.
I'm a honda boy Miguel. I've had my ek hatch for about 7 years and made little progress on it in its last phases. In that time I got an eclipse and found you.. I also got an ep3 with the k20 bla bla bla.. this week I sold my eclipse and got a jdm cl1 2000 torneo euro R (that's not even legal in the US right now, not until 2025 because of your 25 year importing laws.. we only have a 14 year law) 🫠🫠

this makes me wanna continue bringing back to life my EK. removed some rust spots on the body but its all repaired and primed with epoxy all thats left is to repair the front and rear bumper... but with the summer showing up i put it on hold its too hot lmao might just buy the bumpers and send it off for paint, then its changing the carpet and head liner
Picked up my EK last year and have been restoring it since. No joke, I pulled it into the car wash next to my apartment and as I was leaving. Waiting for traffic to clear my passenger brake line gave out on me. So please double check your brake lines if they feel weird. They are 24 year old cars, never know if they got new-ish lines or not
As long as it happened at slow speeds. Imagine one giving out at high speeds

You need a speed sensor so it revs past 4k. The ecu is tuned and has 2 step. 2 step is set at 4k and will not turn off until it gets a signal from the speedometer

Ngl the bike seemed in way better condition then the Civic but hey doesn't matter. As mention Civic are great, easy and fun work on and can be solid investment being done up proper and being sold in a certain amount of time. So definitely worth. Curious for all the content coming. ✌🏼
Open the air tag, take speaker out and reglue. You will owe me when u get your civic back
Also get pedal jacks, they hold your brake and clutch so u can't press them, and some alpha locks

That dude came up fr the civic needs a lot of love also never trust the pre gap I work at a auto parts store and the toss spark plugs and everything all the time so yea 😂 for the review and speedometer check your speed sensor mine would do the same stuck under 4k rpm I fixed that and back in business
She's rough but it's saving grace is how easy and cheap it is to work on

Honestly, earlier this year I bought an evo 9 from a honda guy. I didn't know he was a honda guy at the time, but I've never bought a car with more questionable work done to it ever before. And I've owned over 10 1g dsms... I broke my own rule, and 6 months and 5 grand later hopefully I'll be able to pass smog and start driving it.

Get a timing gun and fix the timing. You might have to remove the upper timing cover and valve covert to set the engine to top dead center and rotate the cam shaft and loosen the timing belt, to align cam gear with timing belt. And then set timing on distributor. When setting timing on distributor make sure to jump a wire to the service connector to lock timing.
I would also hit up your local junkyard and get a cluster either from civic or cr-v of similar year auto or manual cluster should work. I would also get hood latch/cable and other misc. Items to make it more dailyable. I would replace the radiator and hoses/claps and bleed the radiator a couple times. Thermostat might also be stuck closed.
I would also replace injectors/fuel filter. You could also buy/rent a radiator pressure tester to see where its leaking from.

Not ecu issue just play with the distributor and you will be good
Sporadic speedometer could be your a bad speed sensor (found on the transmission). Check connections for corrosion. You can get lucky and find 1 at the junkyard or pay retail at autozone/oreillys. But way out whether you want to drop money on this motor or on a k24 since you’ll need the motor, ECU, harnesses, motor mounts.
Bro the over heating is an easy ass fix. Check the radiator fan switch on the thermostat housing and the thermostat. Make sure the fan switch and thermostat are same temp for activation. If it’s not those, then you just need to do the timing belt, tensioner, water pump kit.
Or just jump the fan switch sensor so the fan always stays on
If change the coil packs ect and still doin the misfire it’s probably valve clearance, easy fix $150 maybe

Another thing, remove the speaker on the air tag! If stolen it will be found when it beeps when not connected to a Bluetooth for so long.
Not sure if this has been answered already but my Evo 4 radiator was plastic and cracked near the cap area. I thought it was a cap to but it turned out it was a crack in the plastic. That radiator looks plastic. Just a suggestion. ECU is probably why you won't get past 4k. It's just a limiter to avoid any engine damage

I came here to watch a video about a clapped out Civic, but ended up getting in my feels when you started talking about people around you loosing that ''spark/light'' they once had. I never really thought about why despite me having a lot of friends and much more funds/time to do what I want, I feel this sort of... diluted sadness. And I think it's very much about seeing people around me kind of fade back in life and loosing that wonder and light.
No one really talks about that much. Everyone talks about the health aspects of aging, but not this. Especially if you still sustain that wonder and playfulness. I guess I am happy I can still live on and still somewhat ''seek the magic'' I have been in my earlier years, but it's definitely disheartening seeing all the people I bought motorcycles with slowly turn them into lawn accessories and trading the warm nights we spent out riding for a beer and a show on Netflix.

Ecu is possibly chipped for 2 step and since the speedo isn't working it thinks your stopped about to do a launch.
That actually makes sense. Might have to figure out if it’s a speed sensor issue

This was supposed to have a chip to cut and it is always between 3 and 4 thousand rpm to send flames through the exhaust

Got to take out the microphone out of the AirTag. If detected, they can activate the sound until they find it.

Not sure if it's been covered yet but the limp mode may be bc of the speedo not working. My GSR wouldn't engage VTEC when my speed sensor harness shorted.
This is about the same condition most of the civics are in around me. Just half-assed builds thinking they're cool doing whatever they can to be cool

It kinda acts like my eg did when the timing was a couple teeth off. It wouldn’t rev past like 4Kish and was super sluggish.

A k24 swap realistically can cost anywhere from 3-5k and is seriously worth it on this platform.

i don’t think it’s the ecu try swapping out the speed sensor out and that should fix your problem. my buddy had a chipped ecu and his speed sensor was bad so mph didn’t work so whenever he would hit a certain rpm his launch control would go off
Okay hear me out… I know I sound like a broken record, but as one of the few out here who also have a rsx type s while being a DsmEr … it feels like the rsx should stay for the daily duties!
I rarely drive my Durango RT back and forth to work bc the rsx is fun while getting 30mpgs RELIABLY.. the Durango is fun too but MPG is rough
the ek chassis never came with anti lock brakes except for 99-00 automatic ex sedans. so there are some wiring problems going on in the dash.

The reason your car bogs at 4k rpms and you have check engine light and your speedometer doesn't work, it's because of your speed sensor the one located on your transmission, it also disables vetec, just replace that sensor and your good to go.
Oh forgot to mention make sure you don't have a blown fuse for your speedometer before replacing the speed sensor, you can get tge sensor in ebay for less then $30

no one mentioned the headgasket yet? Overheating, pushing coolant into the reservoir and not swallowing it back and that geiser it made when turning over is 101 on bad headgaskets. Youre pushing compression thru a bad sealing gasket.
Think your issue with the RPM and cluster not working are the speed sensor.
Last owner told me it was replaced but welle look over it again
speed sensor connector/wire might just be loose. had the same symptom on my dsm
