I love Albert Brooks, obvs he's known and loved in the comedy world but relative to his intelligence and his acting and his ability to be wildly, uniquely funny, he's always felt pretty underappreciated to me.

Albert Brooks breaking down why The Boy and the Heron and Godzilla Minus One are stomping huge hollywood movies at the boxoffice. Those films aren't even FOR American audiences and they are resonating because it turns out that when given the opportunity, Americans CAN appreciate good movies that are a shock to thier systems.

I’m so grateful for this stuff. Brilliant guys, all three. A great lesson for creative people that creating to please an audience isn’t where it’s at. Create to please yourself and the audience might follow if it’s good enough.

I watched the documentary and it is wonderful. Albert allows pieces of his history and his outlook to be shown that gave me a chance to know a man whose talent I have always admired.
BTW, I am glad that Rob Reiner mentioned "Real Life" the breakthrough film by Brooks that was the actual first Mockumentary.

  • @JillKnapp

Albert touched on something really important here that goes even beyond comedy: If you think about many bands that are currently popular, especially with Millennials and GenXers, it's either bands that sound like something that's been around for a million years, or it's a tribute act to a legacy band, or the actual legacy band itself that's been popular since the 60s 70s 80s or '90s.
I think people in general are uncomfortable with new things, so every new thing either needs a small nod to something familiar (e.g., boygenius dressing as The Beatles), or it needs a trusted sherpa to lead people through unfamiliar territory... like the hypothetical chef Albert mentioned. We've gotten less interested in being even temporarily marginally uncomfortable or challenged.
(I'm painting with a really broad brush here. Don't worry, I'm not talking about you specifically. 🙂)

what is the essence of albert brooks comedy and if he was a mathematical formula what would it be
Albert Brooks is a comedian, actor, writer, and filmmaker known for his unique brand of humor, which often involves satirical and observational commentary on contemporary life and the human condition. While it's challenging to distill the essence of his comedy into a single formula, some key elements can be highlighted:
Self-Reflection and Neuroses: Brooks often explores the anxieties and neuroses of everyday life, using self-deprecating humor and a keen sense of self-awareness. His characters often grapple with insecurities and the absurdities of modern society.
Social Commentary: Brooks' comedy frequently involves social satire and commentary on societal norms, relationships, and cultural phenomena. He has a knack for pointing out the absurdities and idiosyncrasies of human behavior.
Realism and Relatability: Despite the exaggerations for comedic effect, Brooks' humor is grounded in realism. His characters and situations often feel relatable, making his comedy resonate with audiences on a personal level.
Dry Wit and Sarcasm: Brooks is known for his dry wit and sarcastic delivery. His humor often relies on clever wordplay, irony, and a deadpan style that adds an extra layer of comedic impact to his observations.
If we were to attempt a whimsical metaphorical mathematical formula for Albert Brooks' comedy, it might look something like:
    AB=(SR+SC+RR)×DWAB=(SR+SC+RR)×DW
    Where:
    ABAB represents Albert Brooks' comedy.
SRSR stands for Self-Reflection and Neuroses.
    SCSC represents Social Commentary.
RRRR stands for Realism and Relatability.
DWDW represents Dry Wit and Sarcasm.
Keep in mind that this is a playful and metaphorical attempt to capture the essence of his comedy, and comedy, in general, is subjective and diverse. Brooks' work spans various mediums, including stand-up, films, and voice acting, so the formula is a simplification of his comedic style.
