During the 60s, 70s and 80s, I was extremely fortunate to see Albert Brooks, George Carlin, Steve Martin and Woody Allen all perform their stand-up comedy...in-person.
While each of them are Mt. Rushmore level comedians, I consider Brooks to be the most creative of them all. This dates back to his many appearances while still in his 20s on late night TV, the "mini-films" he did during the 1st year of Saturday Night Live, a couple of comedy albums, plus a half dozen movies he wrote, directed and starred in (my favorite being "Lost in America").
A couple of comic asides...At the end of Martin's show, he invited the entire audience, some 1,000 strong, to join him outside for some obscure reason. So, like lemmings to the sea, we dutifully followed him into the streets where he resumed his mostly ad-libbed act for another 10-11 minutes...Certifiably a "wild and crazy guy."
Allen was on a revolving stage for no more than 45 minutes---meaning he had his back to me a full 11.25 minutes. The first 20 minutes was "prepared stuff" after which he opened things up for questions from the audience. The fact that the 2nd half was funnier than the rehearsed section attested to the man's quick wit and foretold a "promising future" in show biz....(Note: It so happened that his opening act that night was Jim Croce, an engaging 30-year old singer-songwriter who had burst onto the music scene with several #1 songs and best-selling albums. Tragically, Croce would die in a private airplane crash 6 weeks later. So sad.)

@HolmanHal Agreed, Lost in America is brilliant. It is one of those films that even if you're in a horrible mood and you don't feel like laughing, it will somehow make you laugh as you are resisting.
I know because I recall watching the film when life wasn't going so well, and i just wanted to lighten the room. Eventually, I ended up laughing. I was a little surprised considering how down i was feeling.
I believe it was around the time the words "twenty two" was spoken.
