- Full tutorial on making a forged carbon part from start to finish! Forged carbon is a 60% carbon to 40% resin ratio composite known for it's strength and looks. The mould I made is for a shifter resembling the legendary Nismo duracon shift knob.

I watched your video and got some great tips for making forged carbon.
I was having a really hard time releasing types.
However, when I compressed the cling wrap I use in the kitchen by putting it in a mold, I was able to release it surprisingly smoothly.
No tools were required and it could be opened by hand.
I believe this is the smoothest method.

I know what you mean about the easy composites chopped tow, it's very fluffy and can make quite a mess because of this, wish I'd known that before I started, but I've got loads of it now so it'll have to do.

Came from thingiverse. Great video and a great result I need to get better at designing before i attempt forged carbon but it really seems like a great method for taking 3D prints to a carbon level. I want to try making some forged carbon canards for my EK civic
Sounds interesting, probably way more challenging than this due to being a larger flat object, I might actually try that as well eventually!
I'm from Romania where temperatures can reach 40 C degrees in the summer. My car is more than often parked in the sun and I have a metal shift knob and I never have an issue with it being too hot nor too cold in the summer. I had no idea this is such a big deal. Nonetheless, yours looks great and now I definitely need one.

Iv made loads now. The amount of paint brushes you use is amazing lol
Now I use cut sponge pads Cut to size the use crocodile clips to hold it It helps keep level. Iv done splitter dash pods steering wheel loads

Myself and a friend are going on an adventure holiday to Japan for 2 weeks in November in an RV. We are big into the JDM scene and both have r33 GTR & GTST along with other jdm cars.
We are hoping to go some meets and bring back some rare parts and maybe a couple more cars lol

Should use a resin release agent in the mold next time, it'll pop out smoother and you won't need to re-print

What do you call the type of wax he puts on the mold
For car trim pieces doesn’t it need to be post cured?

You can order chopped carbon in 1/4 inch from Fiber Glast in the US.
Has anyone printed this mold? I'm getting a rough estimate of 4 days to print all 3 pieces. Anyone have and advice to speed it up?
Would you be able to release the Fusion 360 design process as another video but not timelapsed? No need for voice over just so I can see what you do to create the mould.
Very nice! I would be very cautious of wearing gloves around rotating tools though. Lots of accidents happen this way.
why did you use a 3-part mold? could you do this part with a 2-part mold instead?

Just wrap a heavier shift knob, kinda defeats the point if its heavy

Nice Video and great result! But I have one question regarding to your calculations. Isn´t it called „fiber volume fraction“? The ratio of 60% fiber an 40% matrix is related to the volume of the part and not to the mass, right? Fiber and Matrix have different densities; Carbonfiber 1.78g/cm^3 and Epoxiresin around 1.15g/cm^3.
So, if you calculate 60% of 55cm^3 is 33cm^3 of fibre and 40% of Resin is 22cm^3. Multiplied by the density of 1.78g/cm^3 resp. 1.15g/cm^3 you get a mass of about 59g fibre and 25g resin. So the Part should weight 84g with a fibre fraction of 60:40.
With a fibre fraction of 46g, as told in the video, your part has a fiber volume fraction of aproximatly 47%. 47% fibre and 53% Resin.
In the end I think ist doesn‘t matter in case of your part, but I think its worth considering this.

Thanks, no I believe you are 100% correct, I have taken Easy Composite's values because I believe they have simplified them for easier calculations. Not everyone will know the exact values like you do and be able to calculate it, and at the end of the day for a project like this you don't need exact values as long as they are close enough considering the amount of excess epoxy you are using anyway to be squeezed out!

Awesome question, I forgot checking that too! I just ran outside and took it off to put it on the scale and it appears that the steel insert and glue added 15 grams and were now at 89 grams total!

I used a 15mm rod so it would have 1mm clearance from my iirc 14mm shifter lever, if the lever was thinner I'd also use a smaller diameter rod!

Hey Max, thanks for asking! Here's the deal, I uploaded the model for free because this is the sort of project that takes alot of time and patience for a very small (and usually cheap) part that you can't ask alot of money for, especially considering you can get an original Nismo one for like 60 bucks. I'd have to ask for unreasonable money because I value my time, but I do not think shift knobs should cost that much. If someone wants to throw me a too high amount of money because he wants to have something unique and he can afford it, sure. But as said, I personally think it's not reasonable.

What is the point of making the mold in 3 pieces? Couldn't this just be two halves?
Probably doable but the 3p version has the advantage of a substantially easier demolding process.

It's a lot of work. I prefer to make it out of wood and use lead as the weight and just make the handle so liquid lead can be poured into it. You can then adjust the weight as needed, depending on testing results. It's also cheaper and faster. Otherwise, just buy one.
It will also then be made out of wood and not everyone wants a boomer handle.
@@jdmcarrepairs142 make it out of whatever they want. There’s no reason that it must be real carbon. Just paying g more for no performance enhancement. I guess good for people who like wasting time and money.

Wear latex/nitrile gloves for the dust sanding but absolutely do not wear cloth gloves like that for the drill press, its crazy dangerous.
