- In this video I take a printed PECO backscene and using Inkscape, Scalescenes papers and card create an ultra low relief set of house backs to add a 3D effect to the backscene.

That's a really great idea, the Pico back scenes are cost effective and frequently appear in layouts, so this technique makes them more individual and hugely improves the flat look of them.

A way to make clouds is to paint blue then before it dries use cotton balls to take off the paint leaving the white background behind...

Thank you, much appreciated. I think the drawn/printed backscenes add some warmth to layouts and for some reason I don’t think photo backscenes quite suite layouts set in the past. They look great on current day layouts.

Go for it, it does make a difference. I don't have the biggest layout so it shouldn't take too long to get round the rest of the buildings

What a fantastic technique! I've just used the same backscene sheets as they came out of the tube, and they look so flat and uninteresting compared with yours. I feel some alterations coming on......
Hi Liam. Great job and I did a similar thing on my N Gauge layout. In terms of glue, I found 3M Spray Mount works best - no warping.
Thanks for the idea, I’ve used spray adhesive but I think I had the wrong stuff, it was quite stringy and patchy. It worked great for gluing my carpet tiles down but probably not the stuff for the finer work on the backscene! I’ll try the proper stuff next time.
@@deansburytownmodelrailway5056 Hi Liam, Mounting spray is designed to be used by artists and so is fine and does not damage paper. You can get the 3M variety in WH Smiths (expensive), B&M, Home Bargains etc. Some of the Pound shops sell an equivalent but I have not tried theirs.

Richmond North Yorkshire model railway I’m a novice as well, but many years ago was reasonably familiar with 2D CAD so fine with the basics. I have learnt most of what I know from watching Micheal at Chandwell N gauges excellent videos👍

This is a superb effect, Liam! Thank you for sharing. I think you've made it clear to me that I will definitely be using this technique at Chandwell. I think I will be making my own back layer too, but will desaturate the colours a little like on the Peco one you have. A couple of questions if you don't mind... I've never found a "corner pricking tool" that works for me, but yours looks exactly what I want. What is it called? I've tried many times to find something like it on eBay, but just don't know what to type in! :) And secondly... What did you use to get your camera above your head looking down on your mat? This is a great angle and one that I should try to do myself. Cheers! --Michael.
Hi Michael, thanks for the comments much appreciated. The tool is a normal pin vice with a small sewing needle. I’ve filled this down to make it less sharp and I also use this for scoring. I used a gorilla-pod type grip for the camera attached over the top of the adjacent backscene of the layout - still a work in progress to get that set up right and avoid filming my head!

Hi Derek, the designs I made myself and used Scalescenes.com brick papers for the coverings. Inkscape is reasonably easy to use if you a basic understanding of graphics or design software. It is free to download and use and there are loads of tutorials on you tube to cover the basics. For model building take a look at the channel Chandwell for some great intro videos. Thanks
👋🏼, great little video with the updated back scene. I only have one little issue really and that is the clouds, I noticed that the majority are triangular mountain shaped. Perhaps just varying them a little to round them off would look a bit more natural. If you get time check out Bob Ross paintings and you will find ways to do clouds very easily and they look awesome. I am a landscape artist initially and learnt most of it through Bob Ross. Keep up the awesome work. Subscribed 👏🏼👏🏼

Thanks, I will take a look. I have found since starting my own channel so many more channels I didn't know about, but I used to like watching other peoples channels while I modelled, but find this more difficult now I am trying to film my own work!! Cheers
