    One of the golden rules of flying a drone: Always update your home point before taking off

      To which I would add, and keep it updated if you move about while the drone is in the air. Cheers!

    You have the same problem as me, even with the new 1.6.8 , 0201 mini 3 firmware, still have range issues but it is more reliable than the previous one. Btw, i have been talking to dji and got a replacement drone, still the same issue with signal quality. Please continue to monitor and notify DJI to everyone who is having issues with signal. Thank you for the video!

    • @SteveCoutts

      Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment! I will be posting a video in a few hours, which is a follow-up to this video. I did some testing with the new .201 firmware and I am seeing a stronger and more reliable signal as well as improved range. This problem wasn't affecting everyone equally so it's hard to say if this is a true "fix". I am beginning to feel like there are some tradeoffs with the new RC Remote and one of them may be range. Cheers!

    Yeah, saw Shawn's workaround for transmission...yikes. My mini3 is coming Monday...fingers crossed it has no issues. With lots of water and trees, I'd rather not need to deal with rth stress. Good video, Steve!

    • @SteveCoutts
      @SteveCoutts  2 года назад

      I didn't even bother with the workaround. It's kind of a pain and I read some of the comments and it doesn't sound like it's working for everyone. The signal is really brutal. I've never experienced anything like it with any of my previous drones. Otherwise the drone is an absolute dream! 👍 Hopefully yours won't have the issue. Cheers Don!

    • @SteveCoutts

      Congratulations on your first drone! I think it's very smart of you to educate yourself before diving in. My first drone was a DJI Spark and I made every rookie mistake a person could make. Thankfully, the Spark was tough enough to survive my inexperience! I'm not sure the Mini 3 Pro would be so forgiving.
      My best advice is to take it slow and keep the drone close while learning the ropes. Read the manual and understand what happens in situations like lost signal, low battery and Return to Home. Best of luck with your Mini 3 Pro and happy, safe flying!

    Thank you very much!
    The RC controller has 3 options when signal is lost: RTH, Descend and Hover.
    Why is “Descend” even an option when the signal is lost?
    You never know when the signal will be lost. So you’ll never know when or where the drone will descend. Seems like a ridiculous option.

    • @SteveCoutts
      @SteveCoutts  Год назад

      Yeah, I agree, decent is kind of a weird one but so is hover, when you think about it. I guess it really depends on where/how you're flying as to which option makes the most sense. Mine is always set to RTH and ironically it just got triggered yesterday on a flight and it worked flawlessly to get the drone back in range so I could bring it home safely. Happy flying!

      The RC Remote has built-in GPS for positioning so even without maps data it still "knows" its location as long as it can get a GPS lock. So yes, you can update your location even without map data. Cheers!

    So Steve, are the issues with the Mini 3 based on the radio, the drone itself or a combination of both? I'm about to buy the Mini 3 but have been very conflicted as to which option I should get. (DJI RC or RC-N1) Even though range is not the primary factor in my consideration, the more I hear these stories the more I'm leaning towards the RC-N1 since I get the "impression" that the range issues are from the owners of the DJI RC option?

    • @SteveCoutts
      @SteveCoutts  2 года назад

      I certainly don't have all the answers on this one. I have watched and read so much conflicting information.
      What I do know is that using my RC remote in the same location and on the flight path, my Mini 3 Pro gets about 90-95% of the range of the RC-N1, which to me is acceptable. I feel like the RC remote is a bit more picky about antenna orientation though but that is likely due to the difference in antenna design between the two controllers and not a big deal.
      So, as far as I am concerned the range issue has been resolved and is a non-issue.
      Two other things I think you should be aware of before going with the RC remote is speed and phone dependancy. The RC remote is not as fast as my iPhone 12 Pro doing the same tasks in DJI Fly. Not a deal breaker but it is certainly not as snappy as my phone.
      The other issue to be aware of is you won't have total independence from your phone. If you are in flying in a new location and didn't pre-load the map data to your RC remote you won't have any unless you create a WiFi hotspot with your phone. Same goes for authorizations. If you have to authorize a zone, you will also have to tether to your phone to make it work.
      Again, not deal breakers for me but it does kill a bit of the joy of working independently from your phone.
      There is speculation that DJI will be releasing some kind of dongle in the future whereby you can connect the RC remote directly to a cellular network for data.
      Overall I do like the RC remote though and it's definitely at a better price point than the RC Pro.
      Cheers!

    Hope DJI fixes it. I'm not buying one until it's fixed. My Mini 2 works fine, so Mini 3 should be better with O3 communications, theoretically. I had the same problem with the Phantom 4, before the Phantom 4 Pro was released. The P4 had a weak RC. Once I started using and Inspire RC it started working just fine with my expected range capabilities, similar to the P3P.

    • @SteveCoutts

      I hope so Tom and I really hope it's a software issue. I have never had such poor reception with any of my drones until this RC remote. Heads up for everyone watching these: This problem is not limited to the Mini 3 Pro (Obviously) but Do NOT Bind your Mavic 3 with the DJI RC. My Failsafe RTH Did NOT Kick in when I lost Signal and there is more at play in the technical side of the softwares. I had massive range and connectivity issues and it has led to my drone crashing after my screen went black minus the info icos on the top (satellite, rc connectivity, etc.) and DJI is blaming me because while I looked at the controller and had to assume the drone was gone from my connection DJI looked at the flight data and said nope the drone still worked so the crash is your fault and is putting me on the hook for a new Mavic 3. it is NOT Worth it. Or make sure you have a SIM card and screen record every time you fly, because @DJI Support only takes into consideration the flight data to determine your accident and what they see when they can pause and slow down the video rather than the factors not shown on said data. The really messed up part is that my flight data shows the controller go from full connection to zero within 2 meters (zero obstructions or interference between me and the drone). @DJI Support will not care or take into account any factors so with a cheaper mini 3 go for it but with your nice new expensive professional drones Do NOT risk it.

    • @SteveCoutts
      @SteveCoutts  2 года назад +1

      Very interesting and I am sorry to hear about your poor outcome. DJI's software quality and reliability seems to be getting worse with each new product release. I think the lesson here is that you don't want to be on the cutting edge. Wait a few months and let the bugs get worked out before jumping in.
      I have been using DJI products since the Spark days. My original Spark flew away due to a software bug but I was lucky and had it replaced under warranty. Each subsequent DJI product I bought - Mini, Mini 2 and Mini 3 - has had serious bugs. The Mini and Mini 3 being the worst.
      Hope you have better luck with whatever you go with next.

    Home point is that of the controller?! I thought it was if the drone!!

    • @SteveCoutts
      @SteveCoutts  2 года назад

      The initial home point is set to the drone's location once the aircraft receives a strong enough GPS signal. When that home point is set, I would think that for most folks the drone and the remote are in the same location. The home point will not update during flight unless you manually update it. If the drone executes a failsafe return to home it will go back to the original location where it first achieved a GPS lock. Cheers!

    • @SteveCoutts
      @SteveCoutts  Год назад +1

      Well that's interesting. The failsafe RTH process I understand and the behaviour is normal but why does your remote keep disconnecting during landing? Are you close to your drone? If there some kind of interference? If all your software is up to date and disconnection still keeps happening, regardless of your location, you should probably get DJI Support involved as you may have a hardware issue. If it's a problematic location perhaps there is some kind of major interference, especially if it's consistent at a particular fly spot.

    • @bpp5507
      @bpp5507 Год назад

      @Steve Coutts I haven't tested this in any other locations yet, but it's definitely on my to do list, because if it keeps happening then I definitely need to get in touch with support and maybe do a warranty swap or something.... the drone itself will be 5ft in front of me when all this happens. I get an error regarding something about the downward sensors, then it disconnects from the remote as im maybe 10 or 15 feet from the ground. Only happens though when I'm bringing it straight down to land after a flight (im using the RCN1 controller)

      ...note: another thing I've noticed when this happens is, the drone is very shaky and almost unstable like when coming down. At first I suspected it was maybe prop wash, but then I tested my Mavic Mini SE in the same conditions but got way better results and much more stable

      Hi Roy, basically I brought the drone in for a landing by pulling down on the left joystick. Once the drone touched down, I keep holding the left joystick down and the motors shutoff. This left joystick technique is the default stick mode. That method is the kinder, gentler approach. I will use the 90 degree tilt method on occasion when I need to get it down and shut off fast! Have you tried it with the Mini 2 remote? Any issues? Is the range longer?

    • @SteveCoutts
      @SteveCoutts  2 года назад +2

      The Mini 2's RC-N1 controller was better until DJI released a new firmware for the RC Remote and Mini 3 on June 30th. Now my RC Remote actually got better range than the RC-N1. Certainly not a conclusive test but happy the RC Remote has been vastly improved. Cheers!

    Thank you for this video. If you open up the map box I heard you will not see any maps as the RC controller has no I-net connection to access like google maps. If you use the older RC N1 using your cell phone. No issues getting the maps. So you being in the US. If you hit on the map box. Is the screen box just a blank white area? I heard a work around is to connect the RC controller to your cel phone via WiFi and use using the phone as a hot spot.

    • @SteveCoutts
      @SteveCoutts  2 года назад +1

      Yes, I believe that is true. I kind of messed with it a bit and paired my phone as a hotspot to get the maps but I have not spent a lot of time with it - too busy testing the drone itself. What's really interesting is the firmware update released on June 30th disabled bluetooth AND WiFi to get better transmission range and reduce interference. You would have to re-enable WiFi to pair for maps so that kind of defeats the purpose. I don't rely on maps very often so it's not a big deal but clearly there are tradeoffs. Cheers!

      @@SteveCoutts Thanks for taking the time to reply Steve. I did see other videos of the new firmware shutting down the WiFi and Blue tooth. I on the other hand rely on the maps if I become disorientated. However all I really need is not so much the maps, but the flight paths showing the red line directly back to the home point. From what I can see. It does show the direct line as well as the flight path. Have a Happy and safe 4th and thanks for all the reviews.

      Thanks Paul! DJI release a major software update the same day I released this video. I tested it yesterday and it has dramatically improved the performance of the RC Remote. Still more testing to do but I think they have it solved.
      Yes, the RTH was successful and has been successful every time I disconnected. I have made the mistake in the past where I didn't update my home point while moving about and it ended up in a couple of hours searching for my Mini 2. Found it though but it was a good lesson to learn. Cheers!

      Cool. Curious, were you testing the range or was there a practical reason to fly so far? I got out just past 2km a couple of weeks back purely as a test. No problem with that one. Honestly though I have never had a reason to fly more than ~1km away. My risk tolerance is pretty low. Cheers!

    Newbies don't need to panic. Drones nowadays are packed with fail-secure and other safety features. But that doesn't mean you can fly carelessly. It always pays to be a responsible flyer

    • @SteveCoutts

      Absolutely! However, failsafe isn't foolproof. Better to acquaint yourself with the safety mechanisms than be surprised by them in unexpected situations, which could lead to undesirable consequences. Cheers!

    Good evening, don’t know if you can help me please I tried to update my mini pro three and it failed on quite a few occasions in the sense that come server error. I’ve tried this every day for the last two weeks and I’ll get the same message all the time, so I’ve give up on that but I don’t know if you could help me to resolve this please next question or change the propellers on the /drone for a new set followed the instructions A+B Took the drone outside to try everything was okay, and when I started it up at the Propellers went 100 miles an hour. This was achieved by pressing the up arrow on the R1 controller. When I put the two joysticks to the bottom and started it up. The propellers started as normal. why is this happening please?

    • @SteveCoutts

      If you cannot get the firmware to update, you can try downloading the DJI Assistant 2 software and using it to update the firmware. It can be downloaded directly from DJI.com using this link - www.dji.com/ca/mini-3-pro/downloads. After downloading and installing the DJI Assistant 2 software, pay close attention to how it wants you to connect the drone. I believe you start the software first, the connect the drone with a USB cable, then start up the drone. Hopefully that will help you get it updated.
      I'm not quite sure what you're asking in regards to the propellers. When the drone and remote are powered up and connected, pulling both joysticks down, simultaneously to the inner or outer corners will start or stop the motors. This is know as the Combination Stick Command or CSC. Perfectly normal. I have a video on changing the Mini 3 Pro propellers, which may be helpful. You can find that video here - ruclips.net/video/pr9K4n_NY18/видео.html.
      Good luck!
